They are just fantastic dogs to be around - we have already found a companion for him (she is only 3 weeks old so won't have her for another 5 weeks yet). The most important thing to remember, as with any small dog, is to be their pack leader - get this right from the start and you will have no trouble with chewing, persistent barking or their desire to sleep in your bed; set ground rules early and you will enjoy a long and happy loving relationship. I have a three year old male Dachshund, mini smooth coat - love love love him. I've had many dogs (yorkies) and I won't go back. Also, I've heard a lot of people say their dachshund is overly protective and nips at strangers. I can certainly see that tendency in mine. He'd sooner lick you than bite you,... (read more)

Totally agree about training, it's SO important yet so often overlooked in smaller breeds. Anyone who owns a dog should be forced to watch Cesar Millan for a few days - the man is brilliant. I've fallen in love with dachsies as will anyone else who gets one as a pet.
