“toyota hilux ssrx great vehicle”

★★★★★

written by on 22/10/2012

i own one of these toyota hilux surf ssrx and its the best 4x4 ive ever owned. around town its very quick for its size. plenty of power from the 3.0ltr turbo diesel. very comfortable on the open road and off road. having the 4x4 shift on the fly is awesome. always good having a diff lock too. i have a friend who owns a 2011 hilux and i would prefer to travel in my 1997 ssrx. since i bought it i have added arb front bull bar, snorkel, ridge rider winch and it looks grouse. taken it almost every where on most terrains and it always gets me home. i know that toyota make a lot of hilux models, some good, some not so good. this is definitely one of the good ones. i love this vehicle and highly recomend it.

“Its Back!!!”

★★★★★

written by CaptainC on 23/06/2011

I bought my SSRX 3 ltr having found it hidden away at the back of a dealers garage. Very low mileage and on the road test fell in love with its startling acceleration! Looked up the reviews on line before buying and they proved correct - a five star car! Rolled the Toyota at Christmas 2010 at very low speed. (Not the vehicles fault)Insurance paid out and I then bought a Mitsubishi L200 (2005) There was not a day went by without a warning light coming on. My 4 x 4 garage who had bought the scrapped Toyota had it repaired and offered it back to me - I took their arm off. Never been happier with a car. it climbs 1:4 grass hills, descends steep tracks and plods through mud as if it was not there. Very economical for a 3 litre - touching 34 - 35mpg on a run. Don't by new - Buy a Surf!!!

“Not only is it a good looking 4x4! it is the best on...”

★★★★★

written by AfricaCalling on 29/09/2009

Not only is it a good looking 4x4! it is the best on the market for this range of 4x4, knocking the spots of all the others.
YOU LOOKING FOR A GREAT 4X4, then, look no further, you have found it!
As they say 'Toyota.....King Of All Roads!'
I have a Toyota Surf SSR-X, have owned this vehicle for over 6 years and only had to change the tyres and put a new battery as the original ones had started to slow start!
They are very reliable on the road and great for towing, with little effort and good power for when needed. Good fuel economy as long as you don't keep 'red lining' it!? With my 96 ltr tank, I easily get over 600 miles (less when towing but not that much less) It all depends on the driver, how you take off and weather you have a heavy foot?
You have plenty of power when over taking and going up steep hills. You will also have to watch your speed as you can very easily creep over the speed limit without noticing it! especially on the motor ways.
Very comfy to drive and spacious for the whole family including dog!
Great climate control air con that works!
Toyota stock spares or can get them so you never have to worry! they can be pricey though but least they are genuine and not pirate parts which are NOT recommended as they don't last and cause a lot of headaches and break downs!
Servicing through Toyota is also recommended, not as expensive as some car dealers are.
Road tax is £190/annum, fully comp insurance is £233.71/annum with a clean licence and over 10 years no claim bonus.
I am very happy with this vehicle and expect lots of pleasure in driving it! will highly recommend this type, (3 ltr engine not the older 2.4 ltr) to anyone looking for a very good reliable 4x4 with out a doubt.
I know this vehicle will out last any other 4x4.

Thanks for your advise, I am also looking for a Tayota Surf but I am scared about the fuel consumption of Toyota Surf SSR-X, for example if am driving 150 miles and I have to come back (round trip) How many litres of fuel do I need to buy?

What is the fuel consumption per mile? Thanks once again and hope to hear from you.

Regards,
Jordan

Have had 4 old Landrovers, 5 classic style Range Rovers, subaru pick-up, 2 Chevrolet Pick-ups and a Nissan pick-up in 30 years. The Surf on average beats them all! Although each has one or two better points other than the Nissan (which was rubbish).

My Toyota Hilux 3.0 Surf is the best 4x4 I have ever owned and the most reliable. The engine kicks out power like you wouldn't believe and shreds tyres easily. It is excellent at towing and has never lacked power. Very well built, an awesome 4x4.

“The Toyota Hilux Surf is in my opinion one of the best...”

★★★★★

written by Deezel on 08/12/2003

The Toyota Hilux Surf is in my opinion one of the best hi spec 4x4s available today. These vehicles are built to last with reliability to match. The 3rd Gen (1996-1999)will turn heads wherever it goes as it is one of the finest looking 4x4s you are likely to see.The 3Ltr Td engine oozes power and has plenty of low end torque and pulls like you wouldn't believe, great performer off-road too with diff lock an option for when you get into sticky situations. There is also 4wd at the touch of a button which is handy when driving on slippy roads(no transmission wind up due to the centre diff). All in all a fantastic vehicle only available on import from Japan, but worth importing.

The 3rd Gen doesnt have a centre diff so using 4x4 on-road will bind up the gears.

I have recently bought a Hilux surf from an importer, I think its great apart from one very annoying glitch - the starter motor sticks- its intermittent but really annoying when it happens- has anyone found out what the cause is- or do you know how to fix it?

coyoteboy,
The 3rd Gen has a multi mode 4wd system, allowing a choice of;
2wd Hi ratio,
4wd Hi ratio (open centre diff)
4wd Hi ratio (locked centre diff)
4wd Lo ratio (locked centre diff)

Pressing the button on the 4wd lever will engage 4wd leaving centre diff open, pulling the lever to the rear will lock the centre diff and engage 4wd (regardless of button position), then moving the lever to the forward right position through neutral to the 4wd Lo ratio, diff locked position.

For more info, may I suggest you have a look at the following forum, http://www.yotasurf.co.uk/forums/index.php?referrerid=24
where you can find a whole bunch of Hilux Surfers ;-)

Its only possible to lock it in 4wd (causing binding on tight tarmac corners) or run in 2wd. Its not a normal rangerover type centre diff where you can run in 4wd all the time regardless of surface, unless someone played with my Jap 3rd Gen, which seems entirely standard to me!

All 3rd Gen Hilux Surf's have a centre Diff, in some markets (USA) is was sold as a 4Runner, these do not all have centre diffs.

All Japanese spec 3rd Gens have centre diff as standard.
