Although the Dansai 852 is a great machine (it does help to have the remote control), i have lost mine and need to get a replacement, any help out there to locate one, i live in manchester if that helps.

I bought my Dansai 852 DVD player as I'd been off sick for a while and deserved a treat so I entered the dvd market totally blind and I can't believe I landed such a good player. It still plays everything I throw at it and I've watched so many films on it. If it messes up I don't know what to do as all Tesco's current dvd players don't read s-vcd or vcd's, so I just hope it carries on working perfectly.

I found a good link - follow the link but miss out any gaps that may appear. http: //www.dansai. freehosting.net/ custom.html P.S. count to 3? Don't think I've done anything wrong here as I've gone and done a web search!!!!
Written on: 17/12/2002
I can't find my piece of paper with it on. Just do a search on the web for it and I'm sure that you'll find it. I've not checked with my player if it works but have been told that it does!

the Technika dvd212 is available from www.empire-direct.co.uk don't know if they deliver to Germany though? worth a try though?
Written on: 24/10/2002
... and where can I buy such good DVD-Player like the Technika DVD 212 in Germany ?
Written on: 04/10/2002
Apparently it does support RCE discs I haven't got any but apparently all you have to do is set the player to the same region as the disc. e.g. region 2 lord of the rings so you set the player to region 2 not on bypass region.
Written on: 01/10/2002
The player was only availible in the uk through Tesco - it's now discontinued. just look for the one that everyone goes on about and get that one.
Written on: 24/08/2002
Well it maybe a good player but it doesn't support RCE. and some companies use that today.. like on the region 2 Lord of the rings.. it wont play in the dansai 825s ! suck on that!
Written on: 11/08/2002
Apparently the Technika DVD212 is practically the same machine - available at empiredirect.co.uk, about £77 + £10 p&p

Brilliant!! had a few players and i must admit for a cheap player the Dansai 852 DVD player out does most of the expensive ones. Would recommend this to anyone, so easy to use and brilliant will play all it says. The fact that you can turn off microvision and make it region free is a plus also.

Thanks very much Tesco for this great bit of kit-the Dansai 852 DVD player. No more 'dodgy rip off/don't work' worries when forking out £99 for a DVD, unlike some other supermarkets.
The kids have got a Dansai 1010 in the bedroom and we've got an 852 downstairs so welcome to the Dansai family household!
However I've heard through the grapevine that a newer sexier model is due out shortly for the same sort of cash as the 852 but is far slimer and better looking along with a 5.1 de-coder built in.......looks like the dog's going to get the 852 when this baby comes out.

The Dansai 852 is a great DVD/MP3/VCD Player for the money.
Too many people whinge about this and that but for under £100 it's an 11 out of 10 buy.
Stop pratting about and go and buy one NOW !

where online is everyone buying this at? can't seem to find it anywhere.
Written on: 12/06/2002
I don't think you will find a Dansai in the US online as they are Badged and sold in the UK by the supermarket chain TESCOS.
<br>
<br>But you could try the Technika DVD 212 which is the same internals, try www.empire-direct.co.uk ,i dont know if they ship to the US.

Wow. I`ve been looking for a DVD player which could do it all for quite a while now. I have a LG 3660P which has been a trusty beast but doesn`t have the extras which I wanted.
Then last week I noticed the Dansai 852 in Tesco. I checked the web and rushed back to the store to buy one before they sold out. And boy was I glad I did. I have thrown everything at this machine and it has accepted it all. MP3's, VCD`s, CDR, CD-RW... you name it.
The main thing I like is the zoom. I was expecting 2x and 4x but when I clicked the remote I found there was also 1.5x
... I have a widescreen in the lounge but the rest of the house has 4:3 ratio sets. The 1.5x & 2x zoom removes or reduces the black letterbox bars that are seen on these sets when watching widescreen movies so I can now watch DVDs anywhere in the house on any set without going blind staring at a tiny picture in the middle. Overall I would say that for the price this is an amazing piece of equipment and if you are looking for a DVD/MP3/VCD player then you could do a lot worse than the 852. But why oh why do these manufacturers insist on only making their machines SILVER!

The code for accessing the factory menu is turn on player -with no cd in tray - press set-up on remote.(Normal setup screen appears) now press stop - RRW (Previous chapter) - FFW (next chapter). The secret Factory Menu appears - you can now bypass the region control and switch off macrovision. [Does anyone know what the CSS feature is?]
This player worked well with MP3's showing a PC type screen, you use the arrow keys and play button (as enter), to go through the folders and select your tracks - great quality sound on this player. The scart is plugged into my video in my setup and I found it (video) needed to be also switched on to give a perfect clear screen on the TV.
The tray mechanism on my Dansai was smooth and quiet.
Its the best £99 worth I ever had. Enjoy yours too - I am on my 4th DVD player - this is the cheapest and easily the best. I had a cheapy Ariston which was good, then a Sony which didnt recognise a lot of stuff so I took it back and swapped it for a Panasonic DVD A150 which just doesn't measure up to the Dansai 852.

Tye Dansai 852 is pretty much a top-notch DVD player. Couple of problems with a few (R1) discs, didn't like 'Planet of the Apes' possibly the 'NUON' , 'Sex in the City' season 1&2 - produced semi-transparent bands across picture half way through each episode ??? - bizarre. However, this WAS removed by having an on-screen display in the corner, such as time-display (not ideal, but better than nowt!).
Everything else has been fine, MP3, CDR etc...can't complain............
Written on: 12/04/2002
You can use the normal setup screen to turn off subtitles.
<br>You need to select 'off' then press play to confirm it.
<br>The rest of the set up - IE: region code/macrovision removal is done by turn on - no Cd in tray.
<br>press setup on remote - then when setup screen appears, press stop, rrw (Previous chapter)FFW (next chapter).
<br>Factory Menu appears - Do the business !!!Enjoy a classy Machine.

You may have to put up with a ping when you open tray + tesco helpline screen but for under a £100 for the Dansai 852 DVD player why complain seeing it plays mp3,cdr,cdrw,dvdr etc. What a bargain go and get one:-)

The Dansai 852 DVD player is a brilliant piece of kit. I was originally going to get a Sony but spotted it on the shelf while doing the weekly 'being dragged round the supermarket by the wife'. Saw it and fell in love. I've spent over £1000 quid on my home cinema so was nervous about buying a 'budget' player. When I hooked it up and the sound came out of my Wharfedale speaks I knew my mission to create the perfect cinema experience at home was finally complete.

I've had my Dansai 852 DVD player for about 5 months now, and have had no problems at all. I had to return the first one i bought though. It played fine for about 2 minutes, then flickered between black & white to colour, before it stuck on black and white, and that was that. So i took it back and this new one has been fine. It's got every type of output you should need so it's compatible with pretty much all hi-fi systems, to 5.1 surround setup's. Such a crazy price for loads of features (my favourite being MP3 playback). Go get one, if you still can!

As this Dansai 852 is my first DVD player, I don't have anything to compare the 852 with, but it seems to me to be as fully featured as players costing 2 or 3 times as much.
Very pleased with the performance, it even plays my mp3 and mpeg discs.
Very good all round, the best £99 worth I've seen this year!

Wonderful machine. It will play anything you throw at it.
£99 in the uk from Tescos. Get there quick!

What a GREAT player, the Dansai 852(S) DVD player! I haven't yet tested all the formats it can read, but most of them and I'm impressed!
I bought mine in Sweden for only 145 USD, which made it one of the cheapest ones here.
Before buying it, I looked it (and a United 3151) up on the web and I found lots of good reviews here and elsewhere. The hacks page was also an important input to my decision.
Regarding the hacks, it should be pointed out that there should be NO disc in the player, when entering SETUP, STOP, PREV and NEXT. If there is a disc in the player, the secret menu only appears in rare cases. Without a disc in the player, it appears every time. The hack at http://www.vcdhelp.com didn't show that.
For hacks, take a look at http://www.dansai.freehosting.net.
I recommended the player to lots of people. Several of my neighbours and friends bought one after that. :-)
For Swedish readers of this review, I can tell that I bought my player at SIBA. They (of course!) don't know anything about the hacks. They said that the hardware needed to be modified, which is totally wrong.
If I were to wish for someting, it would be one more SCART interface. There is one on my player.
Now, stop reading and go and get one before they are sold out!

The Dansai 852 DVD player is fantastic value for money-does the job well.
Easy to set up and get going.
Even plays multi-region if you want it too.
I was looking to spend as little as possible thinking it would tide me over for a few years when I might invest in a super-dooper all singing and dancing DVD player - don't think I'll need to bother now - FANTASTIC!

Can't work out how loads of Dansai 852 DVD player users are criticising the discs tray, it is both smooth and quiet! What else do they want?

This Dansai 852 DVD player is a superb price for what you get.
Sound sounds good on MP3 play pack, and DVD's look well clear (1st DVD player and pictures will prob. look better anyway since used videos).
The 1st one I brought from Tescos, was faulty (started flickering while playing back in PAL mode after 40 minutes), but for the price I just replaced.

The Dansai 852 is a great little DVD player and so cheap. This thing plays everything and then some! Would recommend it to anyone, get down to your local tesco store ASAP. See www.dansaidvd.co.uk for lots more info

The Dansai 852 is a great DVD player from Tesco certainly giving the Wharfedale a run for its money. I originally went to buy the Wharfedale M5 only to find that Tesco are no longer stocking them! Maybe a new player is on the horizon? Anyway, I didn't know much about the Dansai player so trawler the net and read some reviews. This site really convinced me that this could be a good buy and I must say I'm not disappointed! Not the most aesthetic player available, compared to Wharfedale and Kenwood offerings, but what it lacks in looks it certainly makes up for in features. The picture quality is good as is the sound reproduction, plays MPEG's and VCD's without a hitch and is region free to boot (via a hack). This is undoubtably the best player Tesco has stocked and unless Wharfedale return with a player that is cheaper and even better than the M5 and 750, this little baby is going to be hard to beat.
