Good Points: They make you laugh all the time. A Great dog! A comic, a lover to his / her owner. The funny thing about Scotts is they never seem like a puppy. They are born funny old men/women. Did I say...They make you laugh all the time? They do not bark unless it is truly warranted. Von Wilderbrand disease has almost been eradicated out by good breeders who do DNA testing; and so has the Craniomandibular Osteopathy (CMO). Liver Shunts are not as common as they once were.

Bad Points: A little standoffish to strangers. They have a tendency to over eat and get fat. Has a lot of cancer. In fact, they have 18 times more bladder cancer than any other breed. They also have a lot of other cancers. But they usually do not develop cancer until later in life. Mine have died between 9 and 10 . This is too early to die for a Scott. A Medical Study in California on Scott's may also help human bladder cancer. When this horrible disease has been completely solved in this breed they will in my opinion be "The PERFECT BREED". I am very prejudice. I have had one for almost 50 years. However, I am taking a break. In the last 8 years I have nursed 3 who have died of cancer. I love them so much, I just can not go through another death like that for a while. I have another HEALTHIER breed. But I do miss my Scotts. They are my heart. I guess you could say The Scottish Terrier is my Soul Mate Breed!

General comments: There is no other dog like a Scottish Terrier. I love their personality. They are funny, audacious, laid back, independent and VERY loyal. They are not anything like other terriers. (Cairns and Westies are livelier and bark a lot compared to the Scott.) Scotts are like a bigger dog in a small package. Males will fight. They are all terrier, and they need to be supervised with young children. Although I rode my 2 Scott's backs when I was a small child. They MUST be socialized well from early on. NEVER trust one off the lead. They will run to Japan!

I have been an owner of an eight year old neutered male Scottish Terrier named Hamish. Initially I wanted a larger breed, but I am pleased to say, Scotties do know they're small! They enjoy going out for the big hikes that the bigger dogs like to go out on, and have a deep bark to help with their ability as a watch dog.

When I got my Hamish as a ten-week old pup, after his shots, I took him out for walks and socialized the heck out of him. Scotties have a reputation for not being nice with st ...
