I tried to fly with them from Hong Kong to Bangkok on business class, as their fare was only similar to the full fare economy of some bigger carriers like Cathay Pacific or Thai airways. I was surprised and delighted to find out how good their service and their inflight cuisine were! A year later they have upgraded to the new flat bed. Night flight to Colombo was uneventful - staff smiley and helpful. The return flight was awful - staff unhelpful and surly. When my husband asked for a cup of tea after 6 hours in the air it was an effort for them to provide one. The food offered was awful - lamb burger with fish finger with pizza!! I cannot imagine who thought that concoction up!! I would strongly suggest you take food as the options are very limited and on a long haul flight not enough!! (read more)

I have flown in Srilankan from colombo to London and my mom also flew from London to Colombo, Out of our experience they are NOT at all flexible when it comes to checking in the baggages , not even an extra kilogram they let you and unlike in other airlines they don't let you put the hand luggage into the main baggage, they say it's not in their policy.... Very rude service, end of the day all the luggage goes into the same plane wether its hand or leg. You ruin your reputation by your own... (read more)

its a very good experiences ,grate value for money for my tour from LHR to Maldives vir Colombo. clean and flexible service.I was worried to travel after seen all the comment but the reality is totally different.It is compatible to all the other good airlines. transits in Colombo airport is flexible and No headaches.Even my return flight was excellent. my connection flight had 7 hours delay in the nighttime. Sri Lankan Airways Staff told everybody that they could not offer accomodation nor anything else. Even Families with small children didnt get any sleeping-possibiltity. The only thing beeing offered had been a poor Sandwich and a Pepsi or a coffee (but not both). My wife and I flew from Sri Lanka to London few days back. The flight was faulty. Even after knowing that it is faulty, they tried taking off 2nd time. Everyone in the flight was screaming and no option was given to us to get out of the flight. After the 2nd attempt also failed, we were boarded in to the next flight after 8 hours of waiting without food, drink or any refreshment. Extremely bad service and unfriendly staff. i traveled from colombo to frankfurt and back. My neck and back was pain after travel. Their seating facility is really bad. 11 hours in such seat is really killing. Bathroom is dirty. Air hostess seems to be very serious and not even smiling at people. (read more)

Myself and my partner recently caught a night flight, 4-5 hours long. My partner was next to the window whilst I was sat next to him. The plane had just filled up, noticing there was a seat spare next to me. That was until the crew carried a disabled elderly gentleman on and lifted him into the seat next to me, his mobility was next to none!! His wife/carer was seated across the aisle to him. I booked SRILANKAN AIRLINE ticket for Trivandrum-Bahrain via Colombo On 22nd Nov 2012. Colombo-Bahrain schedule was given at 6.50 p.m from Colombo. When we reached COLOMBO airport at 4 pm they announced the flight is delayed and re-scheduled departure time is 9 pm. Later they postponed the schedule and the time was next day morning 7.10am. We used to travel on Sri Lankan airline on the route MUSCAT – Colombo mainly because there was no other airline flying direct on that route. Fortunately Oman air introduced direct flights and since then we never travelled on this horrible airline. It appears that for the airline staff, all Middle East sector passengers are laborers and housemaids irrespective of what the actual status is. (read more)

As a British Sri Lankan, I am disgusted the way the Sri Lankan airlines staff treat their own people. Sri-Lankans who live in foreign countries are the regular customers for this airline, not the tourists. Yet, the staff treat them differently! We recently booked a flight to Bangkok with this airline and not only did they not inform us the flight had been canceled, they are now trying to charge us a "fee" to return the money to our credit card. I have submitted online for a refund 3 times and have emailed multiple times along with calling Sri Lanka. We get different answers about if or when we will get our money back each time. I have recently booked two return tickets LHR - Colombo. I have not actually travelled yet but there was a problem with my credit card and Sri Lankan got the booking twice. I explained the particular requirements and booked assistance at the Colombo International Airport for a young passenger with a disability/special needs. I travelled back from Sri Lanka yesterday. My baggage arrived absolutely soaking wet. So wet that i could wring the clothes out. Books were soaked through. I have treavelled in South eat Asia for over 22 years and no other airline has managed to achieve this. I definitely agree with you, He is also in the habit of collecting cash for excess luggage direct from the passenger, In fact he has a decoy working along with him, This guy checks the weight of the luggage of the passengers, if it exceeds 40 kg, he calls the passenger on to a side and tells him to pay him at Sr 30/ per kg or else the official rate is Sr 65/ , Once the deal is done he brings a luggage sticker for the extra luggage, and passes it thro the check-in counter, All this is done in the presence of the station manager, this is the reason he keeps staring at the passengers to see if he could make a quick buck.
NO WONDER SRI LANKAN AIRLINES HAS AN OLD FLEET, BY THESE KIND OF CULPRITS MAKING MONEY AT THE EXPENSE OF THE AIRLINE

It happened to me too at the jeddah airport, Flight UL 282, on Friday 13th July,2012, They charged me for 15 kg as excess luggage, No receipt was given to me, When I requested a receipt, The Manager & his assistant said it is ok as long as the luggage sticker in there, and that is the receipt
No wonder they are running at a loss

Planned for summer holidays, with wife, in Maldives. Booked Mumbai- Male return air tickets with SriLankan Airlines (via Colombo by Flt No. UL 142 dt. 01.05.2012), by using Citibank credit card, on internet. Be very careful when booking Business Class seats with this ridiculous excuse for an air line. I paid £3000 for an upgrade from Heathrow to Colombo and was seated in a section of the plane which on any standard aircraft would be Premium Economy / Worl Traveller Plus etc. Rubbish Food, Broken Entertainment consol, nothing special whatsover to justify the price. I am a frequent traveler on Srilankan airlines business class, I am surprised you stated your seat number as H or K 15??? There are only 4 rows of 6 seats, making a total of 24 seats in any of the Srilankan aircraft , there is surely no 15, nor even 5...? You must have been sitting in the economy class, plus there is also no such premium economy in Srilankan airlines as well. I have never ever seen one.
You paid 3000 pound for an upgrade??? My business class return ticket from Hong Kong all the way to London via Colombo was only about 2600 pounds roughly on full return fare all inclusive, and that was offered online their own website.
In regards to customer service. When one time I had something to say about their check in service at Colombo airport, within 2 weeks I got a letter in response to my complaints, and was a long detailed letter addressing the problems, not a standard sort of reply too. I really do question the credibility of your review Mr. Forrest?

Terrible airline. The staff at (in malaysia klia) check in could not be bothered to move. Put us at the back of the plane when I asked if everybody had checked in he said yes but we are the first At the counter. On the plane when you call for the stewardess she just comes Over and turns off the light without asking what you called her for. This turned into a game in the end ! Tried to bump us off the flight. Said it was overbooked. Said they had already checked in other passengers. 10 mins of me saying no way will i fly in economy they then offered two business rather that the four we needed. Eventually they relented and gave us our boarding cards for the seats. Shortly before we were due to fly home from singapore to london via colombo, they phoned us to tell us our flight had been cancelled. My flight no. was UL889 from Beijing to Bangkok on May08, 2011. We were a group of 21 people flew with Srilankan Airlines. This was my the worst experience, the staffs were very rude and has attitude. I was asking for a blanket for my sick nice and they kept us waiting for half an hour. as i landed in sri lanka i had a call to say my daughter had been involved in a house fire and was in intensive care in the uk in a coma....the captain of the flight assisted me to the desk and all confirmed they could get me back to the uk on the next flight 6 hours later, no problem. my brother had flown ahead of me and was already 4 hours away at the beach on south coast of sri lanka
i waited in the airport until 2 hours before the flight then went to the desk to be told they wanted...

I fly Sri Lankan airlines regularly,and flew business class on this trip.Cabin crew are very helpfull,smiling and friendly and nothing is to much trouble.Seats comfortable and food excellent.I think the staff are outstanding and i do get treated nicely being a frequent flyer,so if you travel a lot join their flysmiles frequent flyer programme.Highly recommended. I fly with UL frequently between Hong Kong and Bangkok, they have the lowest and best price which is only about USD400 all inclusive, a generous 40 kg luggage allowance, and use of lounges in both HK (CNAC lounge) and BKK (Air France lounge). Being a short 2.5 hr flight, I used to get their cradle type seat which is already fine, but now it's been upgraded to a flat bed, simply amazing! I was told they have upgraded all their biz class to flat beds, but one thing had to go, that's the trolley service, which I do miss. Overall, I always have a wonderful flight with them. Always smiling, accommodating and they serve great food and great range of teas which they are famous for.

I'm a SriLankan living in Australia, I was transiting in Malaysia and flew with this flight with my 5 months old baby.
First I must copliment the GIRLS onboard. They were very nice, polite helpful all the time and very easy to talk to. Specially the girl named Duleeka, she was extremely nice, but not that the boys were not nice I they were as people friendly as the girls.

The crew are extremely racist against anyone who is not causasion. There is a class ranking of race. Where it seems like all the caucasion vistors get the good seat such as the window seats. They immigration desks are extremely rude. They practically harass you for there own entertainment. I will never go to Sri Lanka again and trust me this is a big lost for many reasons. 1) I love to travel 2) I like to spend my money. Have read many bad reveiws don,t know why. seats where comfortable food was good plenty to drink and snacks.staff freindly and efficient.ok ife not great. both flights left and arrived on time.Only downside was unacceptable slow baggage handling by Alitalia at heathrow T4 waited 1hour 15 mins. for suitcases due to lack of staff. air sri lanka should sack them, they do nothing for their immage. Worst airline I've ever flown with.They changed our flights from London to the evening, to then only being 4hr delayed without any communications etc.When we finally boarded the plan at 2am! the crew did not feel that this was worth an apology!Entertainment poor and customer service almost non existent. Do you think that the crew is anyway happy to work extra hours???? (they' re not even getting paid for that.....)so before bleiming them on non-caring you should just think that the crew members, as anyone else, are human beings that get stressed and tired and that after so many hours of work what they want is just you and all the rest of the passengers to get your seat, keep your mouth shut and get to the final destination as soon as possible to go back home and get a rest........when I read opinions like yours I feel ashame of being English.....you'd better never get out of the country again.....

The air stewards slept the entire flight and when call buttons were turned on by customers they were promptly turned off and not answered by stewards. When I requested a glass of water the air steward went and had a 10minute conversation with another customer before even heading off to get my water. The plane was terribly hot - it was like the A/C was not working. The plane was old and the entertainment was dated. They weren't even bothered to put another video in with 2.5hrs of flight time... It was nice to be noticed and cared for by the cabin crew. They were there and available the whole time. When I started getting a headache during the flight one the staff members searched in her bag and found some paracetamol for me. The other one brought me a glass of water before I had a chance to ask for it. There was not much leg room and the food was nothing special but the customer service was brilliant. Sri Lankan Airlines cancelled flights on us repeatedly, 5 hour delays on the rescheduled flights.
On another occassion tried at 5 different Sri Lankkan offices to change a fight 4 couldnt do it?? The 5th took 45 mins to take us of the original flight and rebook us on the exact same filght?? Flew LHR to GOI V CMB and had an excellent outward Flight. However 6 weeks before return flight was due read a privately posted warning on the internet that ALL Srikankan Airline flights from Goa had been cancelled as from 1st April which was 4 weeks prior to our detarture. I agreed they were wonderful. My flight experience on the 3 past trips from Hong Kong to Colombo on business class, they had all been excellent. Fantastic food, drinks and friendly service plus the new flat bed. I only wished I was flying with them long haul to Europe.
