Heavenly Creatures is an early film by Peter "Lord of the Rings" Jackson starring Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey. It centres around Lynskey's character Pauline, an ugly, shy girl with few schoolfriends and her developing relationship with the beautiful and charismatic Juliet.
The two girls form an unusually close relationship centred around a rich fantasy world that soon becomes physical. When Pauline's parents decide not to let her move away with Juliet the two girls plot to murder Pauline's mother.
Based upon a true story, the film depicts the complete lack of reality within the girls' lives, their need for the other's friendship and Pauline's unpleasant homelife so their motivations are quite understandable, although the hideousness of the crime they commit is also very clear.
In real life, the two women were convicted of the murder and upon their release from prison (which I think was fairly recent, I may be wrong) were instructed that they could never speak to each other again.
