Amstel Holland lager is kind of a middle of the road lager, leaning towards being under the average rather than over. To be a top class beer it is lacking distinction in flavour, for instace a distinctive hop flavour like one would find it in a Czech lager or Pilsener. It also has a much too high amount of fiz in it, which usually is an indication for covering up for lack of flavour. On the other hand, it scores good points for refreshingness for the same reason (fizz) and it is usually served very cold, which contributes to that also. In terms of suffering from hangovers it is not as bad as many other internationally sold lagers (e.g. Stella), but still isn't one of the purest beers I've ever drunk. All in all not the worst choice for the pub visit.

It's true I have never had a decent Amstel in the UK but on the continent it tastes like nectar.

I rarely drink Amstel when here in the good old UK, but when abroad it is the beer or choice and I must admit I rather like it. They say when in Rome, do as the Romans do, so when in Greece, it is obligatory to drink the local boys under the table with a few bottles of Amstel! Amstel goes down well, isn't overpowering and most importantly tastes quite nice!

I agree, a good quality beer, used to be able to get hold of cans in the UK more easily than I can now, although I do enjoy via a bottle when on holiday.
