“Seem as though I'm getting used to writing film...”

★★★★☆

written by zagureanu on 07/01/2010

Seem as though I'm getting used to writing film opinions now I decided that it was about time to try my luck at a fairly recent one I have seen. I'm sure you've all heard of it, as there have been many TV advertisements and hype about it that it would be difficult not to have heard of it. It is of course, Pirates of the Caribbean.
*** A little about the film ***
With it's strong cast and fantastic crew, Pirates of the Caribbean was destined to be a major hit within the UK. There has been a lot of hype about the film and it's made by no other than 'Walt Disney'. Walt Disney have of course brought us films such as 'Cinderella', 'Beauty and the Beast', 'Bambi', and 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame'. Their films are mainly aimed at children but with this one it seems they have expanded their target age group to suit a wider audience.
My god I just read that back to myself and I think I sounded like an expert reviewer lol. It's amazing what you can say when you think about it! But don't worry I'm sure this little bit of maturity will quickly dissapear again into my usual dense self-lol.
*** Cast and Crew ***
The most important people I should talk about first are the crew. The people that actually put the work into getting the film as we see it on our screens. Obviously it would take too long to mention everyone but the main people that have worked on the film are:
** Director **
Gore Verbinski is the man that we should thank if we enjoyed this film because he is the wonderful man that directed it. Now he hasn't had the longest of careers yet but he still has movies such as 'The Mexican' and 'The Ring' to be proud of. An interesting fact about him is that he used to be the guitarist in a punk band called the 'Daredevils' I bet you never knew that!
** Producer **
This film was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer who has an impressive film history including 'Bad Boys II', 'Kangaroo Jack', 'Pearl Harbour' and 'Armageddon'. He is respected in his field and with all the award winning films he has produced,it comes as no surprise that this film has become as big as it has with him on the team.
So there you have it, two of the people you should thank for the film. Now onto the cast and a little about the parts that they play:
. Johnny Depp : Jack Sparrow
. Orlando Bloom : Will Turner
. Geoffrey Rush : Barbossa
. Kiera Knightley : Elizabeth Swann
. Jack Davenport : Norrington
. Jonathan Pryce : Governor Weatherby Swann
. Lee ArenBerg : Pintel
. Mackenzie Crook : Ragetti
. Damien O'Hare : Lt. Gillette
. Giles New : Murtogg
. Angus Barnett : Mullroy
. David Bailie : Cotton
. Michael Berry Jr : Twigg
. Isaac C. Singleton Jr : Bo'sun
. Kevin McNally : Joshamee Gibbs

Now I don't usually list the whole cast because I find it's too long if I do that but this time I made an exception because it was quite a large cast throughout the film. The main actors however as you can probably guess are Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush and Kiera Knightley. Usually I would now tell you a little about the cast's characters, but because the cast list was a little longer I thought it would be best if I just describe them a little in the film's plot description. So if you're ready, let's move onto what the film is all about, after all that is what you're here for.*** The Plot ***
The film starts off with Elizabeth Swann as a little girl on a ship out with her father and his crew. They find a boy floating on a piece of wood and immediately pull him ashore unconscious. Elizabeth is around the same age as the boy and so she takes it upon herself to look after him until he gains consciousness. When she sees him she notices that he has a necklace around his neck. It is like a medallion with a pirate sign engraved in it. She quickly takes it off him before he gains consciousness because she feels that he will be treated badly if he is found out to be a pirate.
This however she later learned was a big mistake. The next part of the film goes on to show Elizabeth grown up as a young woman and she wakes up from a nightmare. The story goes on to reveal that her father is trying to get her married to a highflying guy called Norrington. It's one of those classic things where the father/mother wants their daughter to marry a rich, successful man and the daughter doesn't really have much say in the matter. Anyway Norrington's plan to marry Elizabeth goes pear shaped when Jack Sparrow comes along.
It turns out that Barbossa, captain of the black pearl, stole the ship from Jack and now Jack wants to get it back. He goes to Elizabeth's town to steal a ship so that he can go and find the black pearl. He gets found out as a pirate though and he ends up saving Elizabeth's life when she falls into the sea during a pretty funny scene with her and Norrington. There is a big joke with Elizabeth about the corset she has to wear, she apparently can't breathe while wearing it and she keeps passing out every time she does wear it.
Shortly after he has saved her life however, Jack threatens her life in order to escape. He succeeds for a moment and hides away in an old looking blacksmiths building. Will turner turns up though and gives an impressive swordfight with him and, thanks to him, Jack is captured. Jack is put in a cell but not for long as the black pearl is coming, only not for him. It is coming for Elizabeth because she has the gold medallion and as we find out later the pirates need that medallion in order to break a curse on them. You see the black pearl isn't any ordinary ship. It is a ship that can't be seen, a ghost ship.
I won't spoil it and say how the curse came about but I will say that the pirates need the blood of the person who took the medallion. They manage to eventually get it from Elizabeth only to find that it isn't her blood they need, it's actually Will's because he is the guy that she took the gold from.
There's another twist in the story because it wasn't actually Will that took the gold it's his father who was once a well known pirate and because he is now dead, the blood has now got to come from his only son Will. But will they get the blood and lift the curse?
Now I aren't going to give away any more of the plot apart from my favourite scenes. I will say however that Jack sparrow plays a big part, well actually he plays the biggest part and although I didn't mention him much above, he does have some amazingly good scenes. It is hard to tell during the film whether or not Jack is actually helping Will or whether he is against him and Elizabeth. He does surprise us though at the end and there's a big twist with him near the end, which I will not give away in case some people haven't seen it.
*** My favourite scenes ***
I thought to make it more interesting I would add some of my favourite scenes for you just to see why I enjoyed it so much.
One of my favourites has to be when Elizabeth fell off a high building while chatting to Norrington. He was telling her how beautiful she was and how he wanted someone like her as a wife. He turned around to face her and she'd gone. It really was quite funny and definitely worth putting on my favourites list.
Another good scene I thought was when Elizabeth was on the pirate ship on her way to give blood, and she found out that all the pirates on the ship were actually ghosts and they appeared in their true form at night under the moonlight. Even the monkey was a ghost and rotten to the core.
My last favourite scene is when Jack Sparrow was introduced. He was pretty funny and played the part of a cheeky pirate really well. He just made me laugh from start to finish.
*** Extra Features on the DVD***
The advantages of owning the DVD are that you get extra features with the film. You get two dvd's with this film. One being the film itself and the other being the features. The features you get are as follows:
. Epic at sea
. Diaries
. Fly on the set
. Blooper Reel
. Pirates in the park
. Below Deck
. 19 deleted scenes
. Moonlight serenade
. Image Gallery
. DVD Rom (enhanced computer features)

I haven't watched a lot of them because quite frankly I never do. I did find that the deleted scenes were quite good in comparison to some other films. Most of the other features though are apparently a lot like documentaries. So from what I have seen I can say that they are average in terms of how features go.
*** Runtime and certificate ***
This film runs for a whole of 143 minutes which I have to say are really worth it. It is classed as a 12 in the UK and I'd say that is a good age to have it at as it has a lot more humour in it than anything else.
*** My overall opinion ***
I really enjoyed this film, as it wasn't at all like I was expecting it to be. I thought it would be scary and gory like 'Ghost Ship' but it was nothing like that. It had a lot of humour in it and it had a lot of twists and turns keeping me on the edge of my seat all the way through. I loved the ending and I'd say this is one of my favourite films along with 'Bringing down the house' and 'Terminator 3'.
So would I recommend it to potential buyers? Definitely! This is one I am going to keep in my collection for a long time to come and one I will be able to watch over and over again.

its awesome! I would tell anyone to watch this. It is very good if you like pirates and romance. I would watch every one of them if i could. at some points it would make you laugh cry or even smile. Watch curse of the black pearl, at worlds end, and dead mans chest. They are awesome to watch. They will keep you laughing. Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom look very hot and sexy when in character and Keira Knightly is an exceptional actress.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is by far the best film of the trilogy. I went to see this by accident as the film we had chosen was full. What a great surprise. I loved Johnny Depp's portrayal of a slightly offbeat pirate with (sometimes) a heart of gold. It is crazy in a keystone cops sort of way and the special effects are brilliant. It's an entertaining romp across the ocean with lots of action and twists in the story.

written by Helen of Troy on 31/12/2006

I am writing this review after watching both this and the follow on, Dead Man's Chest, so I have to give this a 10/10, being what I consider to be the better film of the two so far. It was screened on TV over Christmas, and watching it again just confirmed it for me.

Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow is excellent. His crackpot humour, his weird funny running strides and his obvious good looks make Pirate of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Back Pearl a must watch film. The Special effects were brilliant, with skeletons and things running around, and a very odd monkey! The film is not only very funny in places, it is also very exciting as the plot unfolds.

When you have watched this, you will be dying to get your hands on the second film, Dead Man's Chest. Again it is a must watch after you have seen this first one, though not quite up to expectations. I can't wait until the third Pirates film is released though! I'll bet that will be a cracker of a film!

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a great theme park attraction and is perhaps up there with the 'Haunted Mansion' and 'It's a Small World' in terms of being one of the most recognisable rides in theme park history. Every detail of the attraction is flawless from the amazing animatronic animals right down to the hairs on the pirates'legs. Making a film of such a wonderful attraction would be hard-going but with an all-star cast (most notably Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow) breathing life into 'Pirates' characters they have certainly accomplished it. Orlando Bloom leads the film as Will Turner, a humble swordsmith who one day encounters cheeky adventurer Jack Sparrow and thus ends up questing for treasure and trying to rescue his love Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) from Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and his band of undead pirates (including Mackenzie Crook from TV's 'The Office'). One of the best films of 2003.

I found the Pirates of the Caribbean diappointing as I was told it was going to be really funny. I found that it didn't make me laugh and I just found it vaguely amusing. I thought the set was great and I thought the acting was good. I found I got a little bored during the film and that there was not much there to challenge the audience.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl - This movie has romance, comedy, and action. The storyline is good, the overall acting is ok. Except I think the film would have been better without Orlando. I know just about every other girl is so totally in love with him, but I just don't think he is a good actor. Johnny Depp is very believable and just one of the best actors. So, even with Orlando Bloom, I still loved this movie.

I think Pirates of the Caribbean is the best movie I have seen in years. it stars Johnny Depp (as captain jack sparrow), Kiera knightly (as Elizabeth Swann) and Orlando bloom (as will turner). The plot is based on a ride at Disneyland. the one-liners made this film even more enjoyable, (my favourite was "the keys ran off" by jack sparrow (Johnny). This film is a must for everyone it is for all ages (even my mum likes it - that might just be because Johnny Depp is in it - he looks so good in this film) so go and see it now!

written by popcorn18 on 11/06/2004

A wonderful story of pirates and skeletons and swordfights and the dreaded...Black Pearl, a ghostly ship. A jumpy and comical part, Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is as well funny as he is in his acting. He livens up everything, from funny remarks or jumping onto swinging things. Will, a young apprentice of a sword maker, (Orlando Bloom) teams up with Jack and seeks his beloved, Elizabeth Swan (Keira Knightly). She has been captured by the pirates of the Black Pearl, the reason: they are seeking one thing she possess. They travel in many adventures and meet the nasty captain of the Black Pearl (Geoffrey Rush). Fighting scenes are required and this movie fulfilled it, not only that but was made funny along the journey. This was a great bunch of people to put to work in this movie, and I hope the sequel will be as great as the first!

It is really FuNnY!

“So, are we in for a typical swashbuckling, pirate...”

★★★★★

written by sammkt on 13/05/2004

So, are we in for a typical swashbuckling, pirate adventure film which follows suite of those similar to it in being over-spent and to say the least, disasterous? No, Pirates of the Caribbean is simply brilliant, it has everything which is needed for a good film and add in the pirate element and you have every child's dream, add the cast, the plot and those witty one liners and its a film for everyone of all ages.

Right, a quick overview then. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a Disney film directed by Gore Verbinski, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and starring (the great) Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley in the main roles as well as having Jack Davenport and Jonathon Price in slightly smaller roles.

The film is (very) loosely based on Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean ride (at Disneyland). I say loosely as the story is rather original (Screenwriters - Stuart Beattie, Ted Elliot, Terry Rosario and Jay Wolbert) but the ideas of the pirates and the towns are in the film as well as those sneak little things from the ride - such as a dog holding the keys to a cell and the prisoners trying to beckon him forward - the exact thing which is shown in the ride.

Right, so onto the film plot. Because of ultimately his popularity, the story revolves around Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), a not-too-successful pirate who has come to Port Royale to 'commondere' the fastest ship of the British Royal Navy. However, for him things do not go as planned when the Governor's (Jonathon Price) daughter Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley){who is the true person the plot revolves around as all her actions dictate what will happen) falls from a fort, into the sea after the new Commodore Norrington (Jack Davenport) proposes to her, no it wasn't shock, her corset was too tight for her to breathe!

Anyway, our hero Jack Sparrow dives in and saves her only to be arrested by Commodore Norrington as he is a pirate.

That night, Port Royale is invaded by pirates - Captain Barbosa (Geoffrey Rush) and his crew. They have come for a certain piece of treasure which they need to remove a curse they have had on them for ten years which prevents them dying and shows them as skeletons by night. To get this treasure, they end up kidnapping Elizabeth, all because a maid told her they would kidnap her as the governor's daughter so she changed her name and gave that of her childhood friend - Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) instead. This was a mistake as the Turner family is who the pirates are after, so they kidnap her. believeing she will be able to remove their curse.

The next day, he childhood friend Will Turner sets out on a mission to save her, unable to persuade Norrington and his men, he joins forces with Jack Sparrow, springs him from jail, sets sail on the fastest ship in the British Royal Navy, goes to Tortuga to pick up a crew, and then sails to Isla De Morta, where the Barbosa and his crew have set sail for.

I'll leave it at that for now, or I'll give the whole story away. What I've said so far probably makes it sound more like a romance - which it probably is, but add in a few sword fights, including one large one with the skeletal pirates, add in a huge sea battle (which of course you have to have in a pirate movie) add all the excellent acting from all the cast and you get one great swashbuckling adventure film which you'll be able to watch over and over again.

The music for this film is also brilliant. I have read some reviews which say it is similar to his other stuff (Gladiator for one) but whether it is or isn't, the music keeps this story going, the music for Jack Sparrow and the sword fights at the end are especially memorable and catchy - an excellent music score.

The 2 Disc DVD for this comes with many special features, all of which are great:
Disc one contains the film (obviously) and audio commentaries from Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp; the screenwriters; and selected commentaries from Jack Davenport and Keira Knightley; and Jerry Bruckheimer.

The second disc contains the following:
An Epic At Sea - the making of Pirates of the Caribbean from the actors, to make up, visual effects and the premiere
Fly On The Set - behind the scenes, or rather on the scenes for Tortuga, Pirates Attack, Jack Sparrow's Hanging, Will and Jack's Sword Fight and the Final Cave Scene. These are rather fun to watch.
Diaries - A Pirates Diary - with Lee Arenberg giving an idea of what life was like on set for the actors. A Producer's Diary - some excellent photos from producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Diary of a Ship - a fascinating insight into the journey of the Lady Washington - the ship used as the Interceptor which was bought from California to the Caribbean for shooting.
Below Deck - a series of short information films into the life of a real pirate - includes information on food, battles, superstitions, and also famous pirates like Blackbeard
Blooper Reel - the obvious, mistakes made on and off set and a display of what the sound team can do to a scene.
Deleted Scenes - again the obvious - scenes which were filmed and didn't make it into the final film including one with Johnny Depp, Lee Arenberg and the other pirates when noboy shouted cut so they carried on - improvising as to why noone likes the French!
Moonlight Serenade Scene Progression - a behind the scenes and visual effects information, showing the scene on the boat when the pirates are revealed as skeletons to Elizabeth from filming to the visual effects department (which involved one man having beef jerky scanned and placed over his skull!) to the final views.
Image Gallery - again obvious - images from the film including some story boards.
Pirates In The Parks - the story of the Disney attraction, Pirates of the Caribbean. Warning - after watching this you will have the Pirates Yo Ho song stuck in your head.

Both discs also contain 'Enhanced Computer Features'. When placed in a DVD -ROM drive you can view more storyboards, view the script of the film, change a photo of yourself into a skeleton and view more information on the attraction at Disney.

There you go, sums up the Pirates of the Caribbean DVD - well worth the money due to all the extra features. I definately recommend this film.

Johnny Depp plays the old captain of the black pearl, a pirates ship. He tries to run from the black pearl into a land where pirates are forbidden, later there is a massive battle and sparrow is hidden, What could possibly go wrong...
