I don't know why anyone would ever buy from thetrainline.com. You're much better off just buying direct from the train operator:

    - thetrainline charges a £1 booking fee, which the train operators don't
    - thetrainline charges £3.50 for using your credit card, which the train operators don't
    - some train operators (such as East Coast trains) will give you a discount for ordering online (10% in this case), which thetrainline won't pass on to you.

In short, just go to nationalrail.co.uk, find the ticket you want and follow the link to buy it online from the appropriate train operator.

After updating my address online and saving & confirming the changes, the train line still managed to send my tickets to my old address. After many emails back and forth they insisted that i buy new tickets and they refused to give me refund. I will certainly not be buying new tickets through them and hope they go under one day very soon!

I have been waiting for a refund since Feb 09 (it's now November) and I have still received nothing. I have phoned over 20 times and emailled at least three times. The Indian call cemtre always promise repayment but nothing ever happens. They refuse to give a phone number in the UK. They obviously know that most people will just give up. Their refund service is probably the worst that exists. Be warned - buy your tickets elsewhere,

The Trainline has had a recent revamp but the new system is even worse than before!

Booking tickets through the Trainline is a painful, stressful and depressing experience. I wish I could avoid the Trainline but I can't! The Trainline, somehow, has cornered the market with its shoddy booking system providing the technology for Virgin, First Group and Qjump - this leaves me with no alternative.

Well actually it does - I would rather take a longer, more uncomfortable journey on the bus than tr ...

Have been trying to get a refund from The Trainline, for a ticket that never turned up, for 3 months! Have sent 20 emails and made many phone calls each time they have promised that the money would be with me in 5 days! It never has! Their customer service is terrible! I dont even want to give them a 1 star but you have to select at least 1! Awful!

Thetrainline.com is generally useful for researching train journey options, but they are not the best value for money.

Booked a joint train and hotel ticket through the Trainline for a good price but I did not receive my train and I had to rebook the train ticket at the last moment at a higher price. I have emailed customer service twice and written once over a period of 6 weeks but it seems I haven't yet received a response.

I booked an open return ticket from The Trainline from Kettering to London with London zones 1-5 travel card. Got tickets and lo and behold no return ticket was there - called up the call centre to be told that the London travel card is the return ticket despite the fact that i booked it to return to Kettering. I was advised that if I wanted to cancel there would be a £10 fee and that the open return meant travelling on the same day - since when do train companies make up the meaning to ...

The Trainline are ill informed, rude and offerring contrasting solutions. I have just spent the most annoying few hours trying to resolve a booking that was made by trainline: They continually put you on hold.

You could dedicate a whole website to their bad points from my experience I feel. I've been trying to book a rail ticket for travel from London to Stockport. Their website isn't working properly as far as I am concerned... Credit card is persistently declined, bank confirm payment has been authorised, when I try to speak to 'customer relations' I am told no payment has been taken - can't wait to see my credit card statement! My bank has advised the problem definitely lies with The Trainline's sy ...

Tried faxing an un manned station . Never managed to send them to a manned stationafter a 12 mile trip to collect tickets . Brought alternative tickets and took ages to get refund MY advice is never use the train line and use National express or first group instead.

I deal with trainline daily as i book tickets for our entire company and i have never encountered so much stress than i do with trainline. Their website constantly does not work correctly and I get charged for delivery twice and most of the time part of the tickets haven't even arrived. I can never get assistance as when I customer services they seeem clueless and could not help. When I've emailed them I haven't even got a response yet, other than a generic message that does not answer the query ...

The Train Line run several other sites and booking lines too. If you have a problem with Virgin Rail's booking number or online system it is actually run by the train line. They have no complaints procedure, no UK contact numbers and the staff in Mumbai are utterly useless. It is disgraceful that they, along side the train companies should have such a monopoly on the market.

If you have got any plans to ask for a refund, this may be complex. The whole system made life awkward. Con't find out how to telephone them. My letters have not yet been replied to. My advice to anyone booking a train ticket on-line is to do it through the train operator for the journey rather than sites like Trainline.

Train times and schedules seem out of date. Went into city for train that hadn't run for 2 months. Can't find a way to contact trainline to notify them or to complain.

I'm shocked at the trainline's introduction of fees for postage, picking up from a machine, using a debit card etc.But it seems that several train companies use the same online platform for selling tickets, only without any of the charges! It's even free to get your tickets delivered first class for me. (This was with South West trains, but I believe it's the same for Virgin)I would recommend that anyone buys tickets online directly from the train company rather than using the trainline's servic ...

Basically they have a million charges that should not exist aka a pound P&P for a 32p stamp? and a 50p charge for using a debit card? and a charge to pick it up at the station... for gods sake to pick it up!!! How can they get away with it... no wonder no one bothers with the trains when they are so appallingly awkward and expensive...
The fact the secure card thing they have imposed on you does not work, the only site that I know that uses it, have reset the password a million times my bank say ...

Have used Trainline before, but notice that they now charge an "Arrangement Fee" and a fee for using a Debit Card !!!
This is absurd and getting like the airlines with all those hidden charges. Anyone know a better way to book ?

Why do First Great Western and South West trains use them? Appalling! Then they don't take responsibility for any online booking questions - when I had no joy with trainline I tried the companies directly to be told I would have to sort it out with trainline. Pathetic lack of responsibility.
