“The Best Pub near Hay-on-Wye”

★★★★★

written by Fellman on 16/09/2013

The Cornish cod is to die for. The views are great. The staff and the atmosphere are wonderful. We go there regularly. I always take my visitors there - they all love it. Very extensive menu. Great beers - my favourite is Doom Bar - having said that my best mate lived in Dorset/Devon so home from home!

“Great friendly pub with good atmosphere and good food”

★★★★★

written by on 02/06/2011

I visited the Boat Inn with 5 other friends in April 2011 after doing an all day walk in the Black Mountains. We were staying overnight at a hotel @ 2 miles up the road from the Boat but when we checked in we found that the kitchen was closed and no food was available. We decided to cram into one vehicle and drive to the Boat for dinner and a few drinks and our plan was to leave the car at the pub and walk back to our hotel at the end of the night. We all enjoyed excellent food at a reasonable price along with good beer and a lively and friendly atmosphere. At the end of the night when we were about to leave, the landlady and the bar maid were concerned that we were planning to walk along an unlit busy road. They insisted on driving us the 2 miles back to our hotel. Absolutely unbelievable service from incredibly friendly staff. I would recommend this pub to anyone...... without it we would have had a miserable, dry and hungry night!!

Although from the outside the Boat looks in need of some TLC inside was nicely furnished maybe a bit dated. Stunning views of the Wye through the double glazed picture windows. Staff were friendly and helpful despite a very large menu food was fresh and well cooked the portions very generous. Service was attentive but not intrusive. We could relax and take our time would like to come back and try more of the menu.

Having visited the Boat Inn some 15+yrs ago and served salamon from a tin!!by an elderly couple who sadly did not appear to want us there!!.I visited again tonight with my wife. The outside of the building looked somewhat ragged with scaffolding etc but we decided to take a chance. On entering we were greeted by a very pleasant young lady at the bar. The owner Mr Robert Taylor then came and apologised re the external appearance stating that work was being carried out on the roof and front of the building. The views hadn't changed but what a difference with the rest. The waiter was friendly and caring The food value for money and most enjoyable. Having visited the Coach & Horses at Llangynidr approx a fortnight ago the difference was immense. At least in the Boat Inn you had plenty of your selection at a reasonable price rather than very small portions at a high price at the Coach & Horses!! Well worth the journey and would recommend the Boat Inn to anyone who enjoys their food..

Don't let the initial appearance put you off. The rear of the pub, dining room and gardens all look out on the peaceful River Wye with occaisional entertainment courtesy of the RAF. There is a proper bar with pool/darts and a range of ales and ciders if you fancy and a separate dining romm with bar. I went with 3 others and the food was clearly individually prepared from the daily lunchtime menu and specials board. Fresh fish, vegetarian options and the omnipresent Liver and Onions. Staff efficient and polite and good value for money. Well worth a visit.

★★★★★

What a surprise the Boat Inn at Whitney was! Unassuming from outside but the location on the banks of the River Wye is superb. The panoramic windows across the back of the restaurant gave a fantastic view of the river and surrounding countryside including the Brecon Beacons. An excellent mooring site for canoeists and small boats. For those who enjoy wildlife there is a pair of breeding otters nearby. The lunch menu was varied and inventive. A range of dishes for vegetarians are included. The staff were courteous and attentive and nothing was too much trouble for the chef. Portion size was very good, desserts were huge!! Food was good value for money, especially compared to places in the next quaint town of Hay on Wye. There is a camp site across the road.

★★★★★

written by on 09/09/2009

After having not visited the Boat Inn for many years, I decided to book an evening table for a get together with a few close freinds.
The beautiful river setting has remained unchanged and the restaurant ambience was very relaxing and warming. The menu had a degree of diversification which differed it from the norm of food served in pub restaruants. The meals were to a high standard of quality and presentation, and the staff were informative and polite.
I congratulate the new owner on doing a more than satisfactory job in keeping the tradition and tranquiltiy I remember the Boat Inn very well for having, and I recommend this pub to all

Having heard of Boat Inn, Whitney-On-Wye pub from friends who were canoeing down the wye, we decided to take a drive out to the marches, touring black and white villages and ending up for dinner at The Boat Inn. It was a welcome site after quite a wet day.The resturaunt sits in an idyllic position right on the riverbank with large glass windows lots of wildlife activity. We ordered the fresh cod and homemade chips and steak and ale pie with veg,we eat out quite often and can say the food here is excellent, the puddings (l had apple and blackberry tart and my partner fruity brulee)as the mains these were home prepared and excellent, as l was driving, my other half took full advantage of the local brew "butty back" or something, the locals were a friendly bunch we will be visiting again soon.

written by Meistersinger on 18/08/2007

The Boat Inn in Whitney-On-Wye has always had a good reputation, and it is still to be recommended. Those customers who enjoy steak should realise that Continental practice is followed, in that it is cooked more rarely than the average British restaurant.
