“WORST PUB EVER VISITED - 15.9.2011”

Written on: 11/09/2011

This is the first pub in Wales I have been too and feel a clear hate for english people. This pub was not interested what so ever in visitors, just locals despite it being a pub on the river. A group of us canoed and camped on a nearby site. We asked for meals and they clearly wasnt to keen on catering for us despite us calling before hand. The food come out and many of us ordered burgers. As a result we got burgers which were rock hard, on a bun of plain bread no butter, undercooked chips... (read more)

Not only is it in England but it sells Doom Bar, a fantastic ale from the south west, and Cornish cod for its fish 'n Chips, which are the best in the Hay-on-Wye area.

“Nasty Cleaner!”

Written on: 20/06/2011

This weekend we canoed from Hay and we booked a table at the boat for lunch for 12 of us...On arrival we had a small carrier bag of rubbish from the morning on the river. As their was a bin outside the boat we naturally deposited it in the bin outside. The bar staff were very friendly and showed us to our table and we ordered our food and a few of us went outside to have a cigarrette. What happened next can only be described as a scene out of night of the living dead... This mad woman (... (read more)

“Great friendly pub with good atmosphere and good food”

Written on: 02/06/2011

I visited the Boat Inn with 5 other friends in April 2011 after doing an all day walk in the Black Mountains. We were staying overnight at a hotel @ 2 miles up the road from the Boat but when we checked in we found that the kitchen was closed and no food was available. We decided to cram into one vehicle and drive to the Boat for dinner and a few drinks and our plan was to leave the car at the pub and walk back to our hotel at the end of the night. We all enjoyed excellent food at a... Although from the outside the Boat looks in need of some TLC inside was nicely furnished maybe a bit dated. Stunning views of the Wye through the double glazed picture windows. Staff were friendly and helpful despite a very large menu food was fresh and well cooked the portions very generous. Service was attentive but not intrusive. We could relax and take our time would like to come back and try more of the menu. (read more)

Having visited the Boat Inn some 15+yrs ago and served salamon from a tin!!by an elderly couple who sadly did not appear to want us there!!.I visited again tonight with my wife. The outside of the building looked somewhat ragged with scaffolding etc but we decided to take a chance. On entering we were greeted by a very pleasant young lady at the bar. The owner Mr Robert Taylor then came and apologised re the external appearance stating that work was being carried out on the roof and front... (read more)

i was not happy with the staff, they had no idea what was in the dish that i asked them about, they simply stared at me as though i was something off another planet. The atmosphere was dead, had no energy to it at all. The food itself was good quality food and well presented. i would not recommend this pub to my fellow friends. (read more)

Don't let the initial appearance put you off. The rear of the pub, dining room and gardens all look out on the peaceful River Wye with occaisional entertainment courtesy of the RAF. There is a proper bar with pool/darts and a range of ales and ciders if you fancy and a separate dining romm with bar. I went with 3 others and the food was clearly individually prepared from the daily lunchtime menu and specials board. Fresh fish, vegetarian options and the omnipresent Liver and Onions. Staff... What a surprise the Boat Inn at Whitney was! Unassuming from outside but the location on the banks of the River Wye is superb. The panoramic windows across the back of the restaurant gave a fantastic view of the river and surrounding countryside including the Brecon Beacons. An excellent mooring site for canoeists and small boats. For those who enjoy wildlife there is a pair of breeding otters nearby. The lunch menu was varied and inventive. A range of dishes for vegetarians are... (read more)

We had been to The Boat Inn a few years back & checked various reviews, which seemed a mixed bag, but decided to give it a trial. We went for the Sunday carvery & what we got was the worst pub meal in living memory. The plates were cold, & the vegetables were even colder. They took the plates away to microwave, just to try & get a little warmth in the food. The beef turned out to be overcooked, tough & indigestible. Much of this we had to leave on the plate & we decided to pass on the... (read more)

The Boat Inn is typical of a pub not needing to try as the camp site close by provides a captive audience of customers.

Meal was average, starter came with main course! Asked for a rare steak and came completely over cooked.

After having not visited the Boat Inn for many years, I decided to book an evening table for a get together with a few close freinds.
The beautiful river setting has remained unchanged and the restaurant ambience was very relaxing and warming. The menu had a degree of diversification which differed it from the norm of food served in pub restaruants. The meals were to a high standard of quality and presentation, and the staff were informative and polite.

Having heard of Boat Inn, Whitney-On-Wye pub from friends who were canoeing down the wye, we decided to take a drive out to the marches, touring black and white villages and ending up for dinner at The Boat Inn. It was a welcome site after quite a wet day.The resturaunt sits in an idyllic position right on the riverbank with large glass windows lots of wildlife activity. We ordered the fresh cod and homemade chips and steak and ale pie with veg,we eat out quite often and can say the food... (read more)

Written on: 12/07/2009 by dunroming (1 review written)

We stayed at the Boat Inn in rooms above the pub as part of a canoe trip. The evening meal was good but a bit pricey. B+B hugely expensive at £60 for a double room and £50 for a single room. Rooms had not been vacummed for some time as remains of the dead spider will testify, also dirty towels and stained bed linen, door lock not working and not fixed, shower to hot or too cold, really loud duke box playing until 2am, pub not quiet until 4am. Piles of junk on the landing of the B+B rooms,... (read more)

Booked meal at the Boat Inn, Whitney-On-Wye for 16 people mid week and found the food to be of excellant quality. The staff were very polite, and listened to some of our group who had special dietary needs. They dealt with this without any fuss and my guests were very complimentary about the quality of the food served. All fish was fresh (not frozen) all pies hand made with fresh ingredients, vegetables cooked to perfection, chips prepared by hand not out of a packet, in fact the best meal... (read more)

Written on: 26/05/2009 by Disgruntled Diner (1 review written)

The Boat Inn, Whitney-On-Wye is Dreadful. Don't go there. The service was offhand to the point of rudeness and we were treated with supercilious disdain throughout. On arrival - on time - we were told our table was still being laid, then left to kick our heels at the unattended bar whilst that happened.

We declined a starter but were kept waiting 50 minutes for our main course - unacceptable in a busy restaurant but doubly so in one where only two or three other tables were occupied. ... (read more)

I disagree with this review because...it doesn't sound like the same venue we visited. The staff were very polite, kind and helpful to my guests, who were elderly,we were greeted at the door and shown to our tables. There was iced water available and an order was taken for our drinks, and then our meal order. One guest requested steamed fish, which wasn't on the menu, but that didn't pose a problem. All our guests were served together in what I consider to be a reasonable time for FRESH FOOD made with FRESH INGREDIENTS not the run of the mill mass produced microwaved pub grub. No frozen chips are served here. Well done to you all at The Boat Inn. Even Gordon Ramsey would enjoy a meal at your pub.

The Boat Inn in Whitney-On-Wye has always had a good reputation, and it is still to be recommended. Those customers who enjoy steak should realise that Continental practice is followed, in that it is cooked more rarely than the average British restaurant. (read more)

Our stag party camped opposite the Boat Inn on a canoeing trip, and although we hadn't booked, the staff promised they'd fit us in somewhere. We ate in the bar rather than the restaurant, which suited us fine. The menu was large enough to include something for everyone, yet small enough to help the more indecisive amongst us! Once ordered, the food came quickly, and it was good tasty pub food. The starters included soup, sweet & sour prawns, whitebait and deep fried Camembert. Main... (read more)

Written on: 04/09/2006 by meves

The service in The Boat Inn pub and restaurant is rude to the point where it's just best to leave rather than suffer the frustration of trying to get anywhere with them. The food is expensive for the Welsh borders (£9 for a veggie bake). One of the bars has the most revolting smell of stale beer. Overall it's not worth going there. I would recommend visiting one of the pubs a couple of miles in either direction, as you will get service, food and drink in a pleasant atmosphere, which is... (read more)
