“Waste of Time”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Criticalone1 on 18/11/2019

Stupid story, I have seen better plots on cartoons made for 3 year olds. If you are going to be inspired by the music of Queen skip this and listen to their music or go watch a good tribute band. The play was both annoying, insipid and boring. Even the music was not particularly well done.

“Worst Show I've Ever Seen”

★☆☆☆☆

written by DesireeMoran on 26/03/2014

Notice how the positive reviews have broken English and don't sound like a real person wrote them? No real person enjoyed this show. I really think someone paid for those reviews. That's a thing that happens now. "We Will Rock You" the musical's worst offender is the story. It's a juvemille comedy filled with really bad puns. Imagine a musical version of "Dumb & Dumber" filled with dad jokes. The acting is hard to criticize. It came off like an amateur school production, but maybe they're really good actors bringing a terrible script to life in the best way possible. Freddie Mercury leaves about the hardest shoes to fill in vocalist history. That said, I've heard him honored better at drunken karaoke nights. They actors are largely broadway style singers without the vocal range to sing rock anthems. At best classic Queen songs sound like showtunes. At worst some of the songs get really massacred. Between poorly re-written lyrics and weak vocalists unable to compete with the band it turns into a farce pretty quickly. In the last 10 minutes of the show a desperate attempt is made to deliver the concert-style rock homage to Queen that you probably expected when you bought the tickets. It falls short. Some of the actors just don't have the vocal chops and no amount of flashing lights can mask that. The show is flawed on a material level. Instead of honoring Queen it leaves you with the feeling of cheap exploitation. The only thing you'll hear at this show is Radio Ga Ga.

“Worst performance ever waist of your money and time...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by RoSoDo on 13/03/2014

The most awful performance i ever see .. I never leave in middle, but this time i wanted to run away after 10 min of beggining. You just don't believe how bad are jokes , flat music, and acting what a shame. Very sad to say but its waist of my money and my time. Who wrote this??? With music and every one know - i bet it was possible to made something much better then this. And i still don't believe that its playing and staying on stage after such bad review . Don't go, watch a movie at home, spend money any where else.. Enjoy your evening in bar, restaurant or just good book in hand at home, Truly yours Ro..

“We will rip you off.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 11/11/2013

what a colossal mess. The story was pathetic, the staging immature. The music of course was good because it was somebody else's. There were a couple of good voices. Many many people walked out at intermission. I don't blame them. I wanted to leave but stuck it out because I am a huge Queen fan. I should have left.

“What on Earth- or iPlanet or wherever it was set...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Evie123 on 24/10/2013

The story is so, so bad that means that although a great cast and incredible the musical has flat jokes and cringey sexual references that only succeed in making you uncomfortable. Ben Elton what are you playing at? The songs are forced into random situations meaning the luxurious songs of Queen are cheapened and false. Spend your money on a tribute act or a CD instead.

“Believe the bad reviews”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Barcelona999 on 25/07/2013

Queen's songs deserve a far better setting and script than this stereotyped cliche offering. A post apocalyptic setting where rock and roll has been lost and a group of rebel survivors are holding out against domination waiting for the "The One" who says special words (like "I can't get no satisfaction" - really!) and can lead them to the Holy Axe" so to rescue rock and roll - Duh! The whole script was so contrived it was tortuous to sit through it. Queen's songs were the only reason I didn't walk out. Save your money and spend it Queen CDs instead.

“THE WORST MUSICAL... PERIOD”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 11/03/2013

If only I had read these reviews before going to see it. I've never felt so bored during a show... I was taking more notice of the theatre decor than what was going on on stage. The story line was ridiculous. The acting terrible. The jokes... what jokes? Rather than write a story which included the music (Take Mama Mia... which id recommend seeing than this!) it was as if the songs were in place and some stupid storyline written to shoe horn in as many songs as possible... and nothing made sense. The singing was awful. Pitchy. Squealing. I know this has been running for a long time and its most probably because of the songs themselves than the actual storyline. But if you LOVE queen... go and watch a decent tribute act than waste money on this tripe.

“Really Disappointed!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by deejayreeve on 19/01/2013

Terrible show, if you can call it that! My husband had to ask me what it was all about after the first half! Cheesy acting, rubbish jokes (jokes, no I don't think so), it was my birthday treat, really disappointing. We were seated behind two really tall people and struggled to see the stage and actors, however, they must have felt the same as they left after the first half, leaving us to be able to see the entire show.......we wished they would have come back, it was so appalling! Dont' go!!! A waste of your hard earnt money, give it to a charity, at least it may do more good that way, not lining the pockets of Ben Elton and his cronies.

“Terrible that's the right rating”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 12/04/2012

Actors rather were shouting than singing. Sound quality was poor as well. In most of dialogs actors spoke with unnecessary accents. I payed maximum fare sitting in the center of row A of circus and I had to bend forward all the time to see the show. It was 100% waste of money and time.

“An utterly wretched experience”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 10/03/2012

I've seen a few West End shows and, even though I'm not a huge musicals fan, they are generally spectacular enough to be entertaining. Not this time. We Will Rock You felt cheap. On a par with an am dram performance in the village hall. The story line was a disgrace. The jokes were archaic. The acting, unnecessary accents and singing were all diabolical. The dialogue was embarrassing. Ben Elton should be ashamed of himself, and god only knows how Brain May can sleep at night. I wasn't expecting much, but I was stunned by how poor this was. The face value on the ticket was £65. I wouldn't pay 65p. By the second half I'd given up on polite applause and was just desperate to escape. Freddie must be turning in his grave.

SO true! We just saw it in Truro. It was the worst musical I have ever seen: awful script, terrible acting, and a pointless plot. We left during the interval. It was painful to watch. I've seen better school plays!

“Terrible, terrible.... yes, TERRIBLE!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by mdaems on 03/03/2012

I gave it 1 star because that's the minimum I could give. The only reason why I stayed in, not walking out after half an hour is because I thought my girlfriend was having a better time but afterwards, she told me she didn't enjoyed it too much either. Actors couldn't sing, no emotional connection what so ever and whatever that was left got crushed by the loudness of the music, which in total killed every note, every song as well. Somewhere in second half, a character Pop came in and he was the only one who could actually sing. Please give my otherwise wasted money to Pop. I literately nearly cried twice thinking that I gave money to see this, but worse that this is what has become of legendary music, a legendary band. I feel ashamed that I helped keeping this show alive. Sorry Freddy, I really am. My God, so terrible!

“WE WILL HOODWINK YOU”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Thumbelinabelle on 27/02/2012

So angry that I wasted £100 for 2 tix for this show. I didn't bother to research reviews as the name and logo leads you to think it's entirely different e.g. a tribute style show. Instead, the setting is iPlanet. The time is the future, or now.. it's not very clear. The lead male's name is Gallileo Figaro and the lead female Scaramouche. Gallileo has a cheesy American accent... I have been going to shows for the last 15 years and never have I seen something so atrocious. Even though the singers aren't untalented and the choreography is okay, the nonsensical, cheesy storyline with cringe one liners plus the fact it was set in a Mad Max style dystopian future (been done 20-30 yrs ago) yet illogically referring to current technology (ipads/facebook) amongst a myriad of other ridiculousness made it unbearable. All the songs were completely violated by being sung in a high school musical type fashion and they even changed the words out to make it more relevant to the show's storyline. They clearly update the script weekly to make it more relevant, e.g. references to Whitney Houston being dead. And dropping in lyrics to the script, like, "who let the dogs out?" and, "hit me baby, one more time!". Both of which makes it all the more cringe. The one good thing I noticed was a reference to how if people are only making music for money then their soul isn't in it, so it's not really music (or something to that effect) which I agree with. The other 99.99% was the most regrettable 2+ hours I can remember. It pretty much violates rock and roll and Queen's iconic, epic music.

“Review of First Half Hour - HAD TO LEAVE!!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 04/01/2012

Wish I had seen these reviews before wasting £85 on 2 tickets for my husband's christmas present. We have been theatre goers (especially musicals) for the past 20 years and have NEVER felt the need to walk out of a show before, but we honestly could not take any more TORTURE ! Could not understand what was going on, eventually didn't care, jokes were bad, script was awful, overacting was plentiful - have to admit though that singing was okay (pretty impossible to sing a Queen song badly!) Went to Theatre Royal bar next to Playhouse and the staff there advised us to go back in for the second half as it might get better - so we gave the show the benefit of the doubt and went back in but only managed 5 minutes this time! We stood at the back to assess the atmosphere before daring to go back to our seats, but decided we did not want to stay at a party where the only people having any fun or enjoyment were the ones up on stage. We had such high hopes for this show, having read favourable local newspaper reviews and people we knew saying they'd heard it was supposed to be good - the only recommendation we'll be giving people who ask is DON'T GO - WASTE OF MONEY!!

“We Will Rob You”

written by on 06/12/2011

When the inhouse lights dimmed and the stage show lights started l was prepared to be whisked off into the world of Queen and escapism! lf only l could have been whisked off to land of sleep! l have seen better High school productions! Ropey dancing, cringy jokes, weak and awful singing and a ridiculous story line! l can't believe that Brian May actually got on stage with these alleged actors and singers. lf l was him l would have legged it out the back door but, then, it has been going for 10 years (HOW?) so he must just be in need of the royalties!!!!! Couldn't face going back in after the break as it was just too much to bear. My husband felt exactly the same and sighed with relief when l whispered 'is this a dire or is it just me?'. For the record, l love Queen and musicals!

terrible terrible terrible. Wanted to cause myself pain as it would have been something else to think about. I love musicals, i love glee, i love high school musical, i adore les mis and i like queen..... i am their target audience. The accents, despite coming and going, were incredibly grating and false. I am nineteen, love partying, clubbing etc. and i'm partially deaf... putting my fingers in my ears left me with a comfortable volume. The acting was wooden and unconvincing, the 'story' was beyond belief and the dancing was alarmingly out-of-time. The only good things were the costumes (in part), the set and of course the music. All-in-all i wouldn't send my worst enemy to see it, and to be honest, i thought that THEY should have paid ME to watch the second half. I was also reluctant to clap as i didn't want to encourage them.

“Awful!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 19/11/2011

I went in expecting to have a fantastic night and I was disappointed! The leads were unconvincing. Galileo was a wimp and not that great a singer (although he thought he was). Scaramouche had the most annoying voice ever and her "jokes" were so obvious, tired and old. The woman playing Meat was the best singer by far, but had a bit part. The production was quite varied and fun, and I liked the old dude, but all in all it was mega cheesy and not worth the ticket price. I can't believe that Ben Elton has made so much cash out of this. I also think it devalues Queen and Freddie Mercury in particular. What were they thinking?! As for the "story" I think a monkey could have written a better one. I would not recommend this to anyone and would think the majority of people who will go in the future will be tourists who don't know any better poor people...

“Oh My God......”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 19/11/2011

How the hell has this been going for 10 years? I was speechless really. As others have said, Glee does Queen sums the music side up. However, it's not rocket science - people seeing this dross will generally like Queens music, which is Rock music (albeit soft / pop rock). Therefore, to dpo the songs justice, it should be sung like Rock - not by a load of untalented shrill 'high school kids'. Just awful. As bad as the music was, it was the best part of the show, because the 'story' was laughable, which was fortunate because nothing else, including the intended jokes were funny - we didn't actually laugh once. What was with all the name dropping of song titles - why is that funny? Zero chemistry between the leads and what was with the ridiculously annoying fake accent of the lead girl. I regret not leaving at the interval. I have booked up to see War Horse again to help erase the memory of this dross. If you like Queen - go and see a tribute band.
