Summary

Halifax Online provides the capability to control your account with access to paperless statements, control of direct debits and standing orders, transfer money, pay bills, apply for an overdraft, order holiday money, control share dealing, loans and savings accounts, all from one access. The site does not have security features to foil key logging spyware therefore we would recommend that you don't enter your account details in the normal order.

“A lot of security but I like that in my bank”

★★★★☆

written by on 16/04/2013

Pros- You can do more with your account online compared to many other banks They call you whenever a new payment is set up online regardless of amount simple to use and clear language additional accounts opened online quickly (no need for full applications) Very secure Cons- Username is just random numbers which I write down (not my passwords) but then other banks also do this. Halifax will give you a card to carry with you so you can write your username (only) down free of charge To be aware of: You will need a password and a memorable information (both letters and numbers but different to each other) some people find this a lot to remember but I find I have more then one password for things anyway due to different criterias different websites have. If you are new to the bank, you will need to visit with branch with ID anyway and complete application so open initial account in branch.

You also need to set up a phone based security code just in case your account is locked. The online reset function will just finish you off with a reference number and phone number to call. That code will be needed then to verify your identity and forget the voice message reminder about getting your debit card, it's a fraudulent belief.

If you havent set the code up, then you have to wait 5 days, otherwise go to branch with 2 IDs - passport and driving licence. What a safe bank! Just staying for the £5/month.

“good online service”

Surprised to read so many bad reviews. Always found the service easy to use and never known it to be offline (unlike barclays). Any transactions ive done on there have been easy to set up and have gone through without any problems

“Good online banking”

★★★★☆

I have been with Halifax for 31 years and online banking since it started. Up to date all transactions made online through Halifax whether it's transfer, making a payment, SO, direct debit, the service has provided no problems whatsoever. I have evn used my card abroud without problems. The level of security is getting better to beat online fraud but still like to see an improvement in this. Overall I have been very happy with their services for many years. Yes there has been hiccups now and again but after a quick call everything done to my satisfaction.

“It used to be better”

★★★★☆

written by rupal2 on 06/09/2011

I've been using internet banking for a while, and I used to find it really easy. However now with Halifax's new site, it's a lot harder than before. For example I can no longer pay my halifax credit card bill using another bank account. It can only be from my Halifax account. This is annoying as I have to make sure that there are enough funds in this account. Overall the service is OK, but I would prefer for them to roll back to the old website.

I switched from the Halifax some years ago now for similar reasons. Everything I wished I could do online had to be done in the branch where they then would direct me to the phone.

I have several accounts online.I never have any trouble signing into my accounts. If ever I have a query, ie wanting to set up a direct debit on to my credit card( other than what was set online which was minimum or in full) I just ring up and speak to someone who sorts it. I have always found them very helpful.

Works without problems. Easy transfers, account opening, closing, transaction viewing.
Used for 5+ years and I can't remember a time when I had difficulty accessing the site (probably has been in this time, but nothing serious enough for me to remember...)

I'm on O2 broadband if anyone cares.

up to now it has been very useful but suddenly all signing on links appear to have been broken for the last 3 days ( 12th to 14th Dec.09) with no obvious explanation and no immediate contact route.

I could not transfer all the balance in one of my accounts. I had to leave a penny in it before the transfer was accepted by Halifax Online Banking Easy enough to follow even for a pensioner like me.

I just like the easy access to my account that I have with Halifax Online Banking. I would not have it I had to go to the bank and paying bills is so much easier. I like to check my bank account everyday, which I would not have if waiting on statement coming in through the post. Only bad point is like today I can`t seem to access my account, not sure why?

At first I found it a little difficult to find my way around their website, but once I overcame that problem I have found it very easy to use and would recommend it to anyone.A great way to manage my finances. Overall, after being rather wary of using on-line banking, I'm very happy with the Halifax on-line service

written by snatch709 on 26/05/2005

I have held a Halifax account for at least 25 years and worked for them when it was a good old building society where customers came first. Had initial trouble setting up internet banking and after about 8 calls to customers services finally was set up. Since then despite set up problems which was a while ago the Internet service offered by the Halifax is simple to use and I would not go in a branch to do anything unless I have to. It's totally trustworthy and in 'real time'. Transferred some money between accounts and my wife could withdraw it from a cash point miles away almost instantly. Have now signed up to online statements and letters.

“The best thing about the Halifax web saver account is...”

★★★★☆

written by blue10 on 18/01/2004

The best thing about the Halifax web saver account is the high interest rate, 4.05% gross at January 2004, which can be obtained by investing as little as £1. This compares very favourably with Halifax Premier Direct postal banking where you would have to invest a massive £250,000 to receive their highest rate of 3.75% gross. The new ING bank does offer a slightly higher interest rate, however, I chose the Halifax as we have held accounts with them for ages and branches are in every town.
Internet banking is definitely the future. The registration process is straightforward and easily completed. When finished, you can then log into your account(s). All accounts held with the Halifax are clearly listed on the screen, stating their current balance. Money can be easily transferred between accounts, for example if you can afford to invest some money into a fixed term savings account to earn higher interest rates, this is quickly done by an easy-read menu on the left of the screen. Standing orders and direct debits can be easily set up and viewed on screen.
You have complete control over your accounts without the hassle of queues! You can also have a cash card, but have to take lower interest if you choose this option.
The downside of online banking with Halifax and all the other banks, has to be security. This means that three security items have to be typed at log in. Halifax asks for a username and password, which have to be remembered, and preferably not written down! The third security item is one of approximately four questions, eg your mother/father's name, place of birth etc. This is obviously easier to remember, and compares favourably with other online banks where you may have telephone-number style passwords to remember, along with inputting numbers in order requested by them. Definitely more difficult!
The other security issue with Halifax, along with other major online banks, has been that some people have been spammed by fraudsters requesting banking details. However, the Halifax has been quick to ensure that customers are not taken in by this, and guarantee that no-one will lose out as long as they follow the guidelines.
I recommend Halifax online banking for it's high interest rates and ease of use. I wouldn't like to go back to the long queues of yesterday.

The halifax online banking facility is very good (compared with Barclays). Full facilities exist to control you account in every way. Dont forget your password though as it will take a week for them to issue a new security code.
