I bought my '98 ford explorer from a neighbour when my frontera packed up.A large amount of car for next to no money-£900.00 with full MOT & 95,000 miles on it,I have added 12500 in the past year, the car being spacious, powerfull and reliable.I had a problem with lumpy idling when cold, which is common on this model it was upper and lower inlet manifold seals.£60 and a couple of hours under the bonet.no probs.Parts are readily available on ebay, for minimal cost.Has a plesant driving feel, which often causes a smile to creep into the corners of ones gob.also very good for towing,i towed a twin axle trailer with a range rover on it,and pulled a stretch limo out of a ditch!I get 19mpg which feels more like 35 money wise when i fill the LPG tank, what's not to like? Get one while they're still around!

I owned my explorer for 3 years and regreted selling it for a Hyundai Santa Fe. The Hyundai is fine, but not a patch on the Ford. I have 2 kids and a dog. With the in-laws living 300 miles away comfort and performance was a big issue. With a roof box we actually ENJOYED travelling so much, we even bought a caravan, which the Explorer seemed to love towing. It had self adjusting suspension which sensed the load and leveled the jeep automaticaly. We also have a Mazda MX5 which is great fun to drive. But guess what! We always fought over the Explorer keys first. We went for the Ford instead of the JEEP Cherokee simply because of parts and labour. It was absoloutely the right move. The Lamda sensors needed changed, it was done for £200 in one day. That's all the trouble we had in three years. I'm now off to sell my Hyundai for another Explorer. This time we're looking at an LPG conversion, just to make it perfect in every way.
P.S.
We found there were no markings on the rear of the explorer except the name. We made a badge saying "4.0L V6 don't even think about it"
It blew away almost every car on the road with guts to spare.....don't believe me? Go and try one out!!!!!!!!

I purchased my xlt in March 2003. Since then have done nearly 9000 miles and without a hitch. Some of the motoring press slate the car saying things like, "its cheap inside" and "interior trim around gearbox moves" well if it didnt it would simply break!!!!. I and My wife love the explorer and would not be without it.

had owned a jeep cherokee and needed more space(which this has). kids love it. feels like a ford i.e. solid but unspectacular. dont agree with criticism of it`s size (it`s actually no bigger externally than it`s rivals). chrome a bit much, but it`s a heck of a car for the money!

The Performance and off road abilities of my Ford Explorer go with its macho all-American styling. The car's very well-equipped. Gives 20 mpg if I'm lucky The costs of parts and servicing reasonable, but the depreciation was massive. My car has permanent four-wheel drive so it feels safe when driving. The self-leveling rear suspension works a treat, even though it's bouncy. The explorer is rather cumbersome to drive through town. The V6 engine packs a punch, although acceleration not sharp but cruising is effortless. It's for towing my boat. I like the very spacious cabin and supportive seats. The boot is so big it's almost like a small van! I can't help feeling there is too much chrome on this car, especially round the grill. My car has ABS and airbags. I ordered traction control but I doubt its necessary - If I was in an accident with a car I know who would come off better (this thing is solid!)

Is this review copied almost word-for-word from Parkers or is it the other way around? http://www.parkers.co.uk/choosing/car_reviews/main_review.asp?model_id=383 !
