Good Points: Pistol and carbine combo package. Accurate pump gun.
Bad Points: The carbine shoulder stock fits loosely. The release pin on the Backpacker for the carbine stock interferes with the web of the shooting hand. The swing out breech loader isn't the best idea.
General comments: I still have my .177 cal. 1389 Backpacker that I purchased new nearly 20 years ago. At 10 pumps it is an accurate air gun. It can take out small critters up to a possum if at really close range. Even as old as mine is, the internal seals still do the job. Unfortunately, the breech seal got loose years ago requiring one hand to keep the breech closed when firing. Just today, the breech seal finally crumbled to bits making my 1389 unshootable. The concept of the Backpacker was a good idea, but it is good that Crosman offers bolt action breech loaders like the 1377 pistol. You can order the Crosman shoulder stock (1399) and replicate the Backpacker in its 21st century form if you wish.Buy a 1377 pistol today and it is highly likely it will still be a solid shooter in the year 2029.When I purchased it new, I would have rated it a 10. I know a bit more about air guns now so that lowers the rating, but the longevity of well constructed product keeps my rating where it is.

This was the first air gun I ever owned! I gave money to my friend's uncle and asked him to make the purchase because I was too young to purchase it on my own at the time (I was only 15). The best part about this gun is the fact that it breaks down easily (stock detaches at the push of a lever), making it easy to carry and store. With a good scope, this gun is highly accurate. I was able to hit a target dead on at well over 50 yards. This gun is great for hiking/camping. Mine was once pers ...- Read blammo's review (187 words)

Overall, good airgun, but I recomend buying a scope. Amazingly powerful and amazingly accurate with scope. Without scope, it is still okay, but with scope the animals eating my plants better watch out!
It takes forever to load and pump just to shoot one round.- Read Guest's review (45 words)

Canadian selection in airguns that shoot below our FAC limit of 500fps, and can still take rodents and small game are limited to the few .22 cal airguns we can find. That being the case it is still a bit better than just ok.- Read rcritch's review (122 words)

I bought the Canadian version of the Crosman 1389 Backpacker in 2004 The gun to me seems very well rounded. Its light weight accurate at short distances like the pistol idea also like the loading system. I like the sight. The bad its not very power full .22 size pellets make harder to find pellets. I pinched my self powering it up now i got a scar from it. Its not accurate at all from a distance. From continued use the pump kinda sags.- Read EliteHunter's review (88 words)

I bought this UK model Crosman 1389 Backpacker Air Rifle back in 1996, two years before it was discontinued. It is lightweight and reasonably accurate at 15 yards. The detatchable stock fixing is not heavy duty so I have permanently attached mine Ratcatcher-style with two screws through the provided holes on the handgrip. In the UK we are unlikely to ever be able to use it Backpacker style as was depicted on the (USA) box so a detatchable stock is not v useful. It's very noisy, despite being ...- Read mjwr57's review (186 words)

Air guns - Pyramyd Air Report: 1377 - Another Crosman classic!
My compliments to Crosman for seeing that some things don't need to be improved upon. I find the gun to be very accurate with quite a kick. More fun than most of the rifles I have.
