I reserved a car and provided my account details with my Visa card, they immediately took money from my account, which I did not expect or authorise. I wanted to cancel after I received an email telling me that I would need: £1440 - credit you must have on a credit card and NO visa debit cards are accepted, but they take your deposit of £200. Total failure! Zero stars! Argus sub contracted out my car rental agreement to another company and failed to inform me. Then they refused to refund my reservation fee, after I contacted them complaining about the problem they created. BEWARE! This company will take your money and create some excuse so they won't have to return your reservation fee. We went to Sardinia for a week holiday, we went online and found Argus Car Hire had competitive prices and thought we had read the fine print. When we got to the airport we were rudely met with a representative who took us to the desk. We proceeded to give the passports booking reference , VISA debit credit card and licence and were flat out told (despite the fact we had already paid for the car) that we could not take it. I paid Argus to hire a BMW 5 series. When I went to the collection desk at the airport I was refused to take the vehicle because 1) Deposit amount I was quoted by Argus was incorrect. I was asked to pay £1500 (not block on my card but actually pay them holding deposit) but I was advised by Argus that only £300 will be reqd. 2) Actual Documentation requirement to release the car was very different to that I was advised by Argus. I rented a car through Argus when coming back to the UK from Austria and when seeing that I could hire a car for 5 days for under £50 I jumped in. After receiving e-mail saying 'Don't forget to bring your driving license, credit card and booking voucher', I assumed that was all I needed. This company sublets ur contract to a local agency in our case Internationalcarhire who further sublet it to Alvorcarhire!! Rude staff ar reception. Like others they refused to accept our valid yearly excess insurance nd took nearly e2000 from our credit card as insurance. Other companies only take card no. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR - be very aware about hiring from this outfit, you hire from Argus Car Hire but are then off loaded to Record Go, we hired from Palma Airport & as expected there was a large queue at the desk as people are drawn to the low advertised prices but it won't be as it seems. Paid extra insurance for car hire in Faro, gold car said it was invalid and wouldn't pay out if damage or accident, was Told I couldn't hire a car unless I purchased their insurance, had no choice, complained to Argus over 30 emails and the response NIL, just doesn't want to know. I asked them to refund the payment I paid for the insurance as I wasn't able to use it. Hired a car from Goldcar through this bunch. My fault entirely because I already know Goldcar are rubbish but I allowed myself to be drawn in by the low upfront price. Goldcar did what Goldcar do and found a new way to extract money from me but this time it was under duress so when I got back I sent an email of to Argus who act as my agent asking for help. Horrendous! They charged us £456 for damage we did not do 2 days after we returned car plus insisted on us getting extra insurance when we were picking up the car and refused to allow us to have the keys until we did, even though we had an email from Argus stating we were fully covered. Argus were great and provided all we wanted . Good price ,good pick up ar Alicante. However be carefull with inter rent as when we returned the car they went over it with a fine tooth comb and we were there for 15 minutes whilst the inspection took place. They the tried to make out that we had scratched the car which we had not. Luckily I had kept the initial inspection report which we were given at the desk. Booked using MSE links. I have hired many cars this way and generally it is "buyer beware" but if you know what you are doing you can get a bargain. Argus aren't the easiest but more worrying is that I had to change the booking and the website for payment WAS NOT SECURE (unlike the original booking). In 2016 this is totally unacceptable. Went to Majorca a couple of years back and hired a car through Argus Car Hire. I didn't choose excess car insurance and then was stung for it by Record Go car hire, the local company Argus used. I think it was an additional £100. I went back again last September and this time ensured i chose the excess cover by Argus beforehand. Beware of the too good to be true price. I showed up for my car rental and was told there was no reservation in my name and no car available. This despite the fact that I had a confirmation of my reservation. Argus passed on my reservation to another company that had no record of my reservation. Rubbish service. After sending us to two agencies in La Spezia there was no car available. We booked and paid 8 months in advance. We incurred about 400 Euros in additional costs apart from the payments we made. After giving us the run around for a month they welshed out of paying for our costs. They sent us to a specific agent. Be aware that if you select USA resident by mistake (which is easy given its position on the drop down menu to the UK)you will be obliged to take out a higher level of insurance cover.
