Cusstomer of supanet for 13 years and did not have any major problem - just paid my £13.99 p.m.. Then one month I was debited £35 which I was informed was because I had exceeded my download limit. As I had a written contract confirming no download limit, I complained and was told they had changed my contract (without informing me)and they would not refund any money. Finally got rid of this unbelievably shocking company. They lie, cheat, threaten if you dare to complain or question. They tell you that you are under contract when you have never seen one. I left Supanet in December after about 15 years. I had no internet for over a month and when I did get it, it was unreliable, crashing nearly every day. They tried to charge me a large cancellation fee but then said it was a "mistake". I paid a month's fee to cancel. However, having just checked my credit card online I have found that they have taken another payment of about £36 without permission. Thankfully, my bank has reimbursed me and is taking it up with Supanet.

These guys are sharks! Getting a MAC code off these guys is close to impossible, and this is indicative of their company policy which appears to be to do customers out of as much money as possible and make it as hard as possible to switch away from them. I've had the same problem. the bloke that eventually answers the cancellations line is arrogant and rude and called me a liar when i insisted i was on a 12 month contract. he said he could prove i'd agreed an 18 month one but when i asked how he wouldn't say. I've just stopped my direct debit because my 12 months is up at the end of this month and they will not be getting anymore money out of me. i'm just gonna wait for the massive bill i get when they realize I've not paid and see what happens. also reported to ofcom

I have never had a fast broadband connection due to my location in the middle of the Norfolk Countryside. Supanet recently changed their perfectly working (as far as I was concerned) Webmail to a new format. There was an option to keep using the old format, which is what I did. However now that choice has been removed and the new format has been forced upon me. I had a similar experience. I also found their new webmail almost impossible to use on my android tablet - can't open all the e-mails and my addresses wouldn't transfer. However, the option to download addresses from the old webmail to the new one is on the new site and this worked instantaneously on my laptop, which uses windows explorer. I no longer use supanet broadband, however, just paid a tenner to keep my e-mail addresses to save me having to contact everyone.

I only use Supanet for email and was happily paying ten pounds annually for the privilege. Last year it changed to 4.99 quarterly, and now it is 10 pounds quarterly just for the email addresses. Like you I paid it. Did you realise it is only for 3 months?
I was so angry and I tried to phone the billing department three times each call of 30 minutes duration and all I got was the piped music. So I emailed them asking them to justify this high charge and after 10 days their response was:

" I accept your comments but cannot remove this charge. You can cancel the account if you choose by giving us notice."

So they don't seem too bothered about pi**ing off their loyal customers!! So now I am seriously thinking I will have to ditch the address I have used for about 16 years that everyone knows and start with a free provider. But it is such a hassle to let everyone know.

Trying to make contact with them is akin to trying to reach a secret society!! I have been with Supanet over 20 years and the service gets worse and worse. But when you have had a email address for so long that all friends and relatives know I really do not want to change. But I agree with the opening post that things are going downhill fast. It was useful to be able to have access to the information on whether the service is having problems. It drives me mad trying to contact them only to be told that sorry, their fault, and they are sorting it. Why the heck don't they post a message if this is so???!!!

I have experienced the same problem. As soon as I gave notice I was charged for all sorts of things but the most dramatic was the increase in downloading incurring excess charges. Ask for it as soon as you get through on the 0845 number but be prepared to wait for an answer for up to 30/45 minutes! Good luck.

I am going through a similar hassle. I am trying to obtain a mac no to enable me to move to BT. I used to pay them approx £12.00 a month, now pay nearly £50.00 a month. I have sent them e-mails which bounce back, have tried to phone them but a living person never comes to phone. I have now written to their head office asking for a MAC no in five days. As there has been no communication for several years I do not expect to be held to a contract. These people are a rogue company and I look forward to leaving their clutchs and joining a decent supplier!

This sounds very odd, I never had a problem contacting them by phone and they agreed very quickly to give me a MAC code as they have no choice but to give you a code. How did your payments get from £12.00 to £50.00 without you having any conversations with them? Surely if there any increases to your direct debit would have been noticed by you and you would have queried it?
Have you agreed to an upgrade at any time? If not have you received an upgrade you have not agreed to - if so you could contact Ofcom or Trading Standards and ask for them to look into it.

In reply to Suzannemjones's response. As I stated I was unable to contact them by phone or e-mail. I agree that I should have picked up on spurious charges sooner but they occurred in a period when my wife had died and I had other things on my mind. I did notice increases in direct debits but have not taken any firm action until now.

When I demanded a copy of the tape recording of the agreement to a contract they were forced to admit there was no recording. If they haven't told you they are recording the conversation and they haven't explained their terms and conditions, followed by mail or email confirmation of the agreement and terms there is probably no specific contract term. Notify them you are not renewing after the 12 month term you agreed to and demand a mac code. Then cancel your direct debit and send a letter entitled 'account in dispute' and state you are not paying any more money as you do not have a contract beyond 12 months and if they do not agree with that they will have to prove it to you. It's up to them to prove you have an agreement with them, not the other way round!

I say 'just managed' because they applied so much pressure when I rang to ask for my MAC code that I gave up one day, and tried again with a firmer stance the next day. All sorts of pledges as to why BT wouldn't be any better, including that they rent lines direct and therefore the service is no different....Anyway, now with BT and my speed has more than doubled AND I have a cheaper service, holding a few BT shares and having registered as a shareholder. Could you please explain, about why it's not good,if you're a P2P/Bittorrent downnloader. I am quite a heavy user of this and are having issues with Supanet accrediting me with far higher download totals, than what the broadband meters,I have installed, say I am using.

My Supanet broadband package usage limit is supposedly for downloads only, but I find that their daily totals on showmybill, are closer to my total usage,i.e.,upload and download totals combined.

This means,I never get to download anywhere near, the 100GB,I thought I was getting, plus it's very difficult to set any download rates,on my torrent client,as I never know, how much I am going to be uploading on any specific day.

Wish I didn't have 18 months left on my Supanet package. I could have had an unlimited package with O2,for £3/month less, which also included my home phone!

I totally agree. I have been Supanet customer for almost 20 years now and up to the last year or so have found the service good. In the last year however my ebills have stopped and my charges have been going up. I am on a £15.99 a month contract and have been paying way over that since October last year. The direct debit comes from my Husbands account and he hadn't mentioned this until this month when the bill was over£30! There has been an extra charge of a telecommunications service of £4.99 added too. I have questioned if this is in fact legaI.I checked my bills since October last year and have now listed to them the refund I would like. I did say I would cancel if this isn't resolved and i just got a curt one line message telling me the cancellation teams phone number. I told them how rude I thought this was and they have now offered about a quarter of what I have been overcharged. I have written back saying this was not acceptable and my next move will be Trading Standards and/or Watchdog. Yes, if everyone complained maybe something would be done. What a way to run a business. My other problem is that I am tied into a contract for 18 months but will fight to get out of this if my refund isn't forthcoming.

I've reported them to \"Action on Fraud\" - http://www.actionfraud.org.uk/

Maybe other should too - it's a bit of a long-winded process but it seems to be serious and if enough people complain to them maybe we'll get some result.

“SUPA - What ?”

Written on: 26/07/2011 by 3170 (13 reviews written)

My family & I have several addresses with them, and put up with their little peccadillos over the years. It's just so unreliable. The system constantly crashes - leaving us high & dry. Sometimes the system just throws a wobbly & you have to get someone to 're-set' your account before you can use it. They won't reply to email requests for help,,,, or if they do, they take days rather than hours to get back to you. Nowadays though, they have even stopped their Support email address & if... Not only are you being asked to pay £3.99 per month, there is a £1.49 surcharge for using a card to pay this fee each month, (£65.76 per annum!!) for a formerly free service, also about 18 months back they introduced an annual fee for the eMails only service through broadband of £10.99, paid in Dec. 2010 for a year in June find a withdrawal on my card for the new "£3.99" per month service, with no notification, when I phoned I was told I had been written (snail mail) to in April advising me of the changes. Never received it! no eMail back up either, odd for a company thats deals in eMail and broadband. I ws then told I could dispute the charge with the company in writing, what's the actual address? silence!

Hi
Just like to say, that Ive been a Supanet customer since they started and to be fair never had any problems, but when broadband came along I changed provider, but kept using my supanet email account with no problems. Then a couple of years ago I had a letter to say that if I wanted to keep my Email i would have to pay £10 per year which to be honest wasnt bad, so I agreed. But then recently had another letter stating that I owed them £3.99 per month as other reviewers have stated £48 a year which is a riddiculous amount just for Email. I contacted them and theyve granted a grace period before the new charges take effect which is ok, I would have given a higher rating but my main gripe is their ripoff charges, I thought about switching until I saw their prices and what you get (top scale £26.99 for 8Mbps and 25Gb limit is a joke)
Its a shame but they're probably foreign owned like most of britain now, using british customers to subsidise their own populous

“Bunch of cowboys - not even worth a single star!”

Started with Supanet in dial-up days. Service has become shockingly bad in recent 12 months. Applied a download limit and other charges without any notification. Keeps dropping out and staff are RUDE and obviously don't give a damn. Trying to switch but they apply all sorts of stupid rules to maker this deliberately difficult. DO NOT USE. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! (read more)

An appalling company, who's practices when you attempt to change IPS's are bordering on criminal.
They refused to give me my MAC until after they had stopped my connection?!?
Despite putting a cease on it, they forgot to stop taking my money, their customer support is appalling, I could get no-one in any of their departments to take any ownership if my problem.

Please avoid at all costs. (read more)

we have been with supanet since around 2006.. in this time our download speed has never reached more than 600kbp/s download speed. the customer service MADE us extend our contract for an even longer period... also you cannot even understand the customer service representatives as they are from a call centre from god knows where... and they can get quite rude.. we now have a 30gb download limit on us and we were phoned a few months ago as we were suspected to be going over this download limit... Avoid like the plague.

Failed to have a connection set up when I moved address - despite givng them ample notice. This happened on two separate occassions. They ended up blaming BT but later admitted fault. Also their staff are rude and very unhelpful staff and they hit you wtih huge charges when you try and leave - in my case almost £250.

I have been with Supanet now for over four years. I can honestly say that I have never had a single issue with them. No downtime (unlike NTL Cable), and their staff are helpful, knowledgeable and courteous.

Recently had issues with line speed and they were extremely concerned and provided me with the means to diagnose the problem reliably.

In contrast with NTL I went through to Bangalore where I believe a lot of Call Centres are situated these days. If the language barrier wasn't bad... (read more)

BE AWARE - If you own an IPhone & you have a Supanet account you will not be able to send emails when away from home address. The reason is because Supanet do not offer (currently) any compatabilty to Apple products. Their Technical support line couldn't confirm this but the very rude woman in the billing department could. They are way behind the times in comparison to other service providers. Let's hope they get taken over by another service provider soon so this service becomes available. (read more)

fed up with hearing all the bad comments about supanet, if you really want to find a bad isp try talk talk, I've got freinds who have literally had bad health after months of frustration from problems with talk talk. I've been with Supanet since they started 9 years ago and find them an excellent isp with only a few minor blips, the only fear I have is that Supanet will one day be bought over by a bad provider and if it were talk talk or BT I will go back to smoke signals as a more reliable... Just because a worse ISP exists, we shouldn't go around recommending Supanet. It's like recommending herpes over HIV.

Supanet really are very poor and have lots of hidden charges in the small print. Me things this reviewer must own the company. I would have just said "work for them" but from my experience most of the employees hate the company too) I am amazed they manage to stay in business.

Written on: 06/10/2010

I was with them back in the dial-up days, and they called offering to upgrade us to an unlimited package. We agreed, and were sent a few letters explaining everything to us and how to get it set up, but there wasn't anything about a fair usage policy. I looked on archive.net, and according to the old T&C, there WAS a policy that affected people who had monthly allowances, but that wasn't us.

I got a letter saying they were introducing a 30GB "fair usage allowance" (read, "fair usage", not... (read more)

I use Supanet dial-up. No real problem getting connected till last autumn, 2009. But now--and especially since April 2010--trying to connect takes typically three or four attempts. Can't understand why, but don't propose to waste money asking them--other users report Supanet customer service is costly but hopeless. Can any other user explain? And/or even suggest a solution?
