“Buy something else”

★☆☆☆☆

written by uiStuart57 on 14/01/2016

I had a 2.5 T4 which was great to drive and easy to repair which it rarely needed. Decided to upgrade to a T5. Got the t32 174 lwb. Big mistake. Nothing but trouble. Forever getting the engine management light coming on. Limp mode is also a regular occurrence. Had endless parts changed and faults cleared only for them to reappear weeks later. Definitely the worst van I have had in 30 years of driving. Wont be buying VW again. In any format. Shame really because with aircon, cruise control, hands free and 6 seats it has everything I want, just not reliability.

“Transporter T30 140 SWB”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 08/02/2014

I bought a brand new T30 140bhp panel van after being highly recommended BUT few days later electric windows stop working, few weeks later heated mirror stop working, few months later 3rd gear start playing up and so on.. Its all repaired free of charge by VW croydon . However, it became very clear to me that VW is over rated and I should have got a FORD...

“T5 Drive shaft failures”

★★★☆☆

written by triumphtr8 on 03/07/2013

Jan 2005 vehicle bought as ex-demo April 05 with 4K. 3 years later and with 63k done exiting roundabout in 2nd gear bang, no drive. Recovered to local VW dealer and g/box stub and drive shaft replaced £440 lighter. Dealer would not let me have broken components as he said VW need to evaluate reason, but I've never be contacted with result. Shortly after this Water pump and then Power steering pump failures, around £500 each. I thought lets hope this is the end but now 5 years on 147K exactly same, gently pulling away from roadworks, change to second gear, bang no drive. Recovered back to same VW dealer, cost for stub & drive shaft £840, not very happy. Discussing this with various mechanics I know, its not a rare with VW whether it be Vans or cars, off side drive shaft problems are quite common. Have contact VW customer services who are not aware of any common failures in this department, but from what I've heard they certainly ought to be. How about all customers suffering this costly and extremely inconvenient failures contacting VW customer services to voice their opinions and maybe upgraded parts will then appear.

renault used VW auto box in Laguna, stub shafts used to break frequently boxes were replaced under warranty. I still have a couple of these boxes with broken drives.
Manufacturers always deny there's a problem, save them a bit of money

“VW Sportline five cylinder, now four year old”

★★★★☆

written by on 02/02/2013

Use mine for transporting two track bikes around the country.Superb vehile , good performance , comfortable, kicks out 200BHP. Good service from my local VW Van Center in Edinburgh. Had a Vivaro Van before that, which siezed comeing over the Peak District one night. The Vauxhall garage in Seafield told me the engine had siezed but it turned out to be a siezed air conditioning compressor that is after they gave me a quote for a new Engine!Love the look of the van, it is really smart. I have a camper top on it which is quick and simple to use as it folds simpy away in minutes.Would like an even more powerful engine and four wheel drive. Recommended

“after 4 years with a 174 going to renault trafic crew van ”

★★★☆☆

written by duffersj on 12/09/2012

Bought a very high spec 174 full leather , esp, all elecs etc. 2 clutches later, 2 drive shafts, various other problems its back in the garage again looks like a drive shaft again. This vehicle has been serviced every time by VW and had all work done there. its done 88000 and is not driven hard. quite frankly cant wait for my trafic to arrive. I have bought an 2008 trafic and the drive, handling and fuel economy is sooooooo much better its untrue. I have now ordered a second brand new traffic sport crew van for under £15k compared to the £30k vw wanted its a a joke.

“Sublime”

★★★★★

written by Artie642 on 18/12/2011

This is a 174 kombi, with twin side loading doors, and a tailgate. I use it everyday for work and at weekends for my hobby. Performance from the 174 is quite muscular, not 'sprint from the lights' fast, but quick in gears and for overtalking, has bucket-fulls of torque to waft past the overtakee. It's comfortable, has enough creature comforts to pass muster (air con, PAS, elec mirrors, windows, cruise control, remote locking, trip computer etc) and is eminently practical. economy is good, averaging between 33-35 mpg on moxed driving, but rising to over 40 on a run if you don't have lead boots on. Exploit the power and the mpg suffers - not too badly though, and using that grunt is very satisfying and great fun. Reliability has been exemplary, no major issues, just the usual service items, all carried out with efficiency and aplomb by Guilders, Newark (used to be Heron. It was expensive to buy... BUT ... I'm also getting a very good price back for it, so overall costs are pretty good. Used vans in good order are much sought after. I can't recommend it highly enough. In fact, I've just ordered another one....

We run a fleet of VW Transporter T32 , 2.5 TDI ( 130 bhp ) vans, which spend most of their time on the motorway ; we have found that at around 100 k miles, the normally reliable vans start to suffer from serious problems - Drive Shafts / Turbos / Clutches / Water Pumps..we have worked out that a normal visit to a VW Van Centre Dealer will cost approx. £ 2700.00 to cure these problems. We will not use VW Transporter Vans again.
I was told by a Service Manager at VW that really we should only expect to have a reliable van for 100k then should buy a new one - not what you want to hear when you want your vans to last 5 years.

I bought my volkswagen transporter T5(30) 174bhp 3years ago and have never had any problems at all.....fantastic van and it does everything effortlessly.I especially love driving my van on the motorways it really does eat those miles a good driving position and with cruise control all those 50mph road works are not a problem.Fuel economy is real good for a van of this size I regularly achieve over 35mpg it has good grip to the road and I would recommend the bridgestone tyres...excellent.I am finding it hard to say anything negative about this van.....so I wont but thats for real.I hope to keep my van for along time to come but on this showing would definately buy another.

Brilliant van that is both practical and fast. Like a car to drive. I absolutly love mine. 174bhp is mint and takes some beating from any car. My dad has an A6 which aint much quicker (although will go round corners like a train).

Great cool looking van. looks cool, drives fast......leaves cars behind, 4 wheel drive, space...... better fuel efficiency than your average jeep, 35 mpg... No bad points, if you compare with orther vans, expensive!

Had the Volkswagen Transporter T30 174bhp Van for 6 months now, use it every day either work (builder) or at w/ends (fishing).
Around town steering is light, an agile van. Out on the open road its great fun, getting rid of my TD4, the 174 is much better to drive and live with. Best bit about the van is the amount of car drivers you leave behind, this van is fast. I have a chip in it and now its great fun.
