Any reputable care hire firm will hire cars with a full tank, and if you don't return it full you pay the difference. Of course with high fuel prices of course that is too simple for some, who provide a quarter tank so that they can pump out the excess when you return it. This is a great way for hire companies to make an extra £30 out of you. Rentalcars.com don't mind working with companies who do this, and don't give you any way to find out until you have paid. On first appearance the Citroen Kangoo appeared quite big and our expectations were not very high. How wrong we were. It turned out to be a great vehicle, very roomy but easy to drive and park. It looks a bit like a loaf of bread, very rectangular and not particularly aerodynamic. It had no problem taking the four of us around the South of France and up some steep and windy mountain roads. The service was very friendly and helpful. Got an upgrade on arrival... Opel vectra so that was a result. The car was slightly dirty on the outside however everything else was fine. It was a good car to drive. The firm sign for the return drop off was a bit hard to see so missed the turn-off and had to drive all the way back round. (read more)

I went online and wound up at RentalCars.com and found the website easy to navigate and the prices extremely competitive. When I went to book I had a query, rang the toll free number and got straight through to an exceedingly helpful customer service agent with a great sense of humour. We booked a minibus from Cagliary airport in Sardinia. Everything went without a hitch - except the company which rentalcars.com had told us we were booking from had cancelled our booking. Eventually the Italian girl on the desk discovered that our booking had been transferred to another company. Maybe rental cars.com didn't know. The car was a Mitsubishi Galant with a lot of miles on the clock for a hire car, about 33000 on collection. The agent was very pushy in trying to sell me an upgrade and also extra insurance that I didn't need as I take out an annual excess insurance and seemed quite off when we turned down everything. The staff at the desk are obviosly on a bonus to sell you extras.They put a vehicle recovery fee of about £50 on my bill without any conversation with me ,however I noticed this and had it taken off. At the same time the person next to me was told he needed to purchase a pass for the turnpike as he was travelling down to Miami. The yound lady from Gold Car that issued us with the keys was very rude. As we were going to be hiring more than 1 vehicle this year with travelling around in our motorhome, the extra cost of the excess waiver insurance doubles the cost of the car hire, we decided the best thing to do was to take out an excess waiver insurance from home for a whole year, which actually works out cheaper for a year than the one off when you hire the car. We ended up leaving and going back to the airport to get a different rental car from wonderful National. Payless is horrible. Talk about hidden fees. By the time he was done telling me I was up to $30 a day for a compact dirty car. They eat you out there so you feel you can't leave. Never use them. (read more)

The location of the Thrifty and Dollar lot is far from the airport. There is no Thrifty/Dollar office at the airport and no desk. You're on your own to figure it out. You will need to get a shuttle, and there are no signs indicating where to catch the suttle. It's a bit of a hassle. When you eventually find the unmarked bus stop, you will most likely wait about 1/2 hour for a shuttle to arrive and may need to call the company to let them know you're waiting (this has been the case for me 3... Arrived in France on a Bank Holiday and 2 of the 4 car hire desks were closed. Our desk was manned by an English girl who was very helpful indeed. She appreciated that one of our party was in a wheelchair and immediately upgraded our vehicle, and after talking a little more, she upgraded us again, and have to say this made my life so much easier for the duration of our trip. Booked an automatic ford focus or similar with thrifty and got a Hyundai Santa Fe 4x4 ,was well pleased. I know this would not be for everyone but for me it was ideal as I drive an SUV at home. When picking up the car we had to wait for almost half an hour. This is bringing you in not a very good mood. When the lady at the desk then starts practising her course "how to sell an insurance policy" temper rises. Her main selling point was that the car was new and therefore it was best to buy an insurance that covers your own risk of eur 750,--. I hate these tricks. The car was a VW Golf manual. It was just about the perfect size for getting about France generally: any larger and it would have been too difficult to get around the narrow city streets and any smaller and it might have been unable to properly benefit from the autoroutes. Could I suggest that pickup be made in some place where there Is more natural light. I signed up for a rental car with insurance. I found out from Enterprise car rental the insurance was not with them and would not be sufficient. I tried to cancel less than 12 hours after reservation and was given the run around. Do not buy insurance associated with this site! TOTAL RIPOFF. No way to cancel or amend. (read more)

Needless to say we were let down by another hire company because we were not told they closed at 12 on a sat and they gave no curtesy call before they closed, so when we turned up at 12.30 they were shut tight with no out of hours number to ring. We are regular travelors to Florida and always use this company for car hire. The prices are always competetive , the booking is effecient and the hire runs smoothly. The web site is a bit difficult to negotiate as different packages with different cars are all mixed up. It would be easier if you could first pick the type of car and then choose the add ons that you need, I.e platinum package, sat nav, young driver etc. (read more)

Great Service, Great car with upgrade from Golf to Audi A3. No issues at all, and I have used Rentalcars before in Italy, and will certainly use them again. everything seems to go as you'd expect. My only issue was the built-in SatNav. There didn't seem to be an option to change from German to English, so proved quite difficult to use although I have learnt a few phrases. when you book it looks ok, after you have paid there are extra cost and small print to recon with. The service works well, and I had no real problems. However, my preferred choice of make/model (Mini Cooper) was shown as available but all of the car hire fims struggled to find one! I gave up in the end and went for a Ford Fiesta or equivalent. I was given a Vauxhall Corsa which was suprisingly good and at £26 it was superb value for money. (read more)

Our car was ultimately provided by Alamo. i) The whole experience was ruined by the young lady who dealt with us at the rental desk. She was efficient, but totally lacked any charm. Not a smile, please or thank you. There was a problem with us not being on the electoral role (we spend most time abroad and had overlooked this) - she explained to us that if we failed the electoral role test we would not be hiring a car - it was as if we were listening to a robot. I was advised by Thrifty Rentals that even though my booking sheet indicated I had pre-paid my excess refund insurance they could not actually confirm that I held such Insurance. They informed me that in the event of damage they would still charge me the excess ($NZ2600.00) and it was then up to me to claim from you i.e rentalcars.com - Is this correct? Though the directions from the car hire desk within Heathrow weren't quite clear, we did eventually locate the bustop for the rental courtesy bus which took us to the car hire depot. A fantastic car, price, and customer service from Sixt. I plan to use them again when I hire a car in Edinburgh. The car was almost brand new (Mercedes A Class) and handled extremely well. We were quite pleased with the comfort of the vehicle on our drive out to Islay. The car fit three passengers with modest luggage quite well. I've been hiring cars from Phoenix Sky Harbour for some years now. I used to book locally with Enterprise till I discovered how much I could save online, and that was a LOT! The savings on this site are substantial compared to local booking, handover is very quick and when I re-book the cars there is no hassle. I found renting through RentalCars.com a very positive experience. The on-line booking was straight forward and when picking up the car from my destination airport (car was hired from Hertz) the reservation was all logged in their system, and the voucher I was emailed by RentalCars.com was accepted with no issues.
