ive had my phase1 Dturbo pug for 12 months now and it hasn't missed a beat nor had any electrical problems (touch wood) even though its done 165000 miles.
it starts first time every time even when it had 6 inchs of snow on her and
-10c last winter. its one of the best cars i've brought and yes it is showing her age but she still gives some modern car a run for there money and i can see myself buying another one if and when the old girl gives up the ghost but i can see that happening just yet.

performance. as it a diesel it no ferrari. pulls well. took it on a 200mile round trip this week. at 60mph it cruises at 2000rpm. average 58mpg. (due to upgraded exaust) it prob do well over 60mpg.

practicality. big boot. loads of room in cabin. and really comftable. quite inside not rattling cant hardley here engine. really comftable on my long trip this week. usually end up with a sore back in other cars. foot rest next to clutch pedal. mine got half leather out of a xsi. same stle seat as dturbo. seats support really well. i can get in back easy to and seat comftable (iam 5ft9).

reliability. been reliable so far starts up fine even when it been -8oc. omly things ive had done since november a service. drive it 3000miles. mostley to work on dodgy potholed b road. ( can suffer minor electricial faults i hant had any yet touching wood).

value for money.
spec of mine
half leather out xsi (normal dturbo interior good
aircon ( think mine need regasing)
outside temp
glove box on small side
two ash trays front and back in middle of front seats
interior lights front and back or car.
loads of extra bit think car good valve for money. good spec for a 12 year old car. shouldnt rust which is a good point.

This car has been fantastic. I bought it when I was at uni because i needed something which would be cheap to run. It is group 6 insurance and very economical. I consistently get around 45/50mpg and that's a mixture of city and country driving.

People who bad mouth french cars reliability have probably never owned one. In the 2 years i've had it i've not had to replace anything apart from normal consumables and it's always started first time.

I have previously owned the 306 1.9DT which although a good engine, is less refined and sounds much more 'diesely'.

These cars are quite hard to come by now in the 3dr Dturbo spec which means they are holding their value quite well.

I would recommend this car.

“Most frustrating car I have owned, brought when it was...”

★★★☆☆

written by jimlad1969 on 22/06/2008

Most frustrating car I have owned, brought when it was two years old with 55k miles on it sold 6 years latter with 118k. Cheap to insure, service costs low but does need it every 6k miles and easy to get over 500 miles out of the 55 litre fuel tank. But over all ownership cost was completely unacceptable, despite being serviced on the dot had to pay 1000 ' s in repair bills. Had to be recover by the AA three times, I was on first name terms with the patrol man. The clutch was replaced until warranty when I bought the car. A year letter the air-con condenser failed - £750 repair bill At 84k miles not long after the cambelt was changed a con-rod snapped (known fault on 97-98 Dturbos) total bill for replacement engine, starter motor and air-con pump £3500 Fan belt snapped got into the cambelt case, two new belts and a full engine check £400 Immobiliser failed £150 Bit of plastic snapped off the electric window rack, new rack and motor £180 Sometimes it would go for a year or two with no problems but on balance it was a liability and I was glad to see the back of it in 2006. Will never buy another French car again, but if you can find one that has been looked after and fancy a gamble then there worse cars you can buy.

written by edmondb on 08/02/2008

I have 250,000 Kilometers on the clock, 160 000 miles. Still looks good. I take good care of my Pug 306. Originally the car was a 1.9 aspirated. Did a good 200 000 kilometers, till the gearbox cracked. Till now I had to change a number of times engine mountings and front suspension arms. Roads in Malta are terrible. Changed engine complete with gearbox from another pug turbo. The rear suspension now is noisy now. I used to service photocopiers and delivered a big number of photocopiers with the car as well. The only place that the car showed rust around the roof. Exactly under the weather rubber strips. Door cable harnesses had to be replaced as well. Considering all the hard work carried out with the car think that it fared quite well.

“Being only 19 the dturbo is going to the best car I...”

Being only 19 the dturbo is going to the best car I can get insured on (group 5) I think its a brilliant car its quick will do 0-60 in 10 or 11 secs and will save you in the pocket doing 45-50 mpg. Mines a bit of a poor starter in the morning, but I love this car I like how the engine growls and its great when the turbo kicks in I also love the sports seats:). Mines done 115000 miles and even though its dated now stil looks great and runs well. I have a phase 1 and prefer it to the later models as it looks more agressive and meaner. You can also get performance gains from little tweaks of the turbo wastegate and fuelpump for example so again saving money. Mines a 3 door a will fit 5 no trouble and in prettygood comfort. Overall a nippy car good for the economical motorist and defintley a looker great robust engine too.Id recommend this more than a 1.4 or 1.6 not only is a bit quicker but cheaper to run and more fun to drive. Great buy if your a student like me wanting a decent pretty fast car.

written by pug306 on 11/01/2007

The Peugeot 306 D Turbo is a great car.

It's done 170,000 miles now and has never let me down. It's had a couple of new batteries but that is it.

I don't look after it and it's lucky to see any new oil in a 12 month peroid.

Hoping it'll easily bust the 200,000 mile mark...

I have owned this particular car for 6 months now, and have owned 3 previously - all petrol (1.4-1.6xs) and it is easily the best! Quicker than the 1.6, and feels more solid and robust. My present one is a new shape, as opposed to my old ones (phase 1) and I have to say that I much prefer the interior on the newer ones, whereas I feel the exterior on the phase 1`s appear more aggressive, and look meaner! The performance is great, especially now I have had the fuel pump opened and fitted a pipercross induction kit, (which gives the car a lovely growl!) 4th gear being my favourite gear (go from 60-100!!) Acceleration is good, 0-60 in 10 secs. However I do miss the rev range of petrol, you need to change gear a lot quicker in the diesel, topping out at 45, economically, in second. Overall, an excellent car, highly recommended to anyone who wants a good, quick, economical car, which is also practical and comfy! Suited to all ages!

I agree, Good car and it looks brilliant.. although as stated the air conditioning units on these cars can be unreliable!, Mine wasnt working when I purchased mine and I later discovered why, needless to say the repair bill was going to come to in excess of £700! So be warned, they are not a cheap fix!!

Sadly mine is high mileage, and I have had a lot of expense added for repairs to this car, so avoid high mileage's if possible!!

Airborneuk's Response to tgarraway17's Review

Oddly enough the repair bill on mine would have been around £700 - £800. - nothing wrong with a window.

After a few years of owning this car I would advise that you look HARD and CAREFULLY, and test EVERY button!

Since owning my car I now wish I had never of purchased it!, (mine was a high milager though - now done 140K for an S reg 1998). I have had to replace, 2 rear shock absorbers, catalistic converter, main raidiator, alternator, ball joints, track rod ends, a manual fuel pump - as a hole appeared and drew air into the fuel and cut the engine dead, also had to replace the heater control unit as that short circuited, the passenger side electric door mirror is fussy sometimes it wont tilt down, and there is no a problem with the alternator belt pulley wheel (ball barring is on its way out).

Not saying they are all like this but parts aren't exactly cheap, but its the garage labour costs which cripple you..!

If you really fancy one of these cars as they are nice cars, I would suggest an AA or RAC inspection, so that a qualified mechanic can inspect the car to see what hidden problems there are!, stay away from high mileage vehicles as they ware badly.. a badly warn steering wheel will be a good indicator to see if the vehicle has been warn in a lot. Try ALL of the electrics and if you find something that's wrong but you still want the vehicle..HAGGLE! cause its going to cost you to get the problems fixed! - unless you know how to do it yourself.

Just be cautious as with my car, one problem seems to bring another.. probably my bad luck though!

I have owned this Peugeot 306 D Turbo for a year now and it has never broken down. It started first time after being left for 2 weeks and with 103k on it now, it doesn't smoke and hasn't lost performance. Perfect low insurance car with hidden talents! Love it!

written by muffymeister on 02/01/2006

The Peugeot 306 is a really reliable car, I've had it 3 years and done only 40K (I bought it with 95K), all I've had to do is follow the service indicator gauge and get is serviced regularly. Nothing major has ever gone wrong (apart from a CV and a turbo ... the turbo was probably the previous owners fault as it was a hire car!) but it has never EVER let me down! The handling can out do a Focus easily and can keep up with the Corsa/Fiesta's/Saxo SXI's! rather funny when there screaming to get past you! and you just leave them behind in your smoke!

written by ferpower on 18/05/2005

Overall the Peugeot 306 D Turbo is a great diesel car, sporty looks with excellent mpg. I have owned my car for 5 years, bought it with 50k on the clock, it now has done well over 160k, still running with original clutch. Only work carried out to the engine has been to the head. Apart from that it has been serviced every 6k. These cars will run forever as long as you service regularly. Suspension bushes wear out quick. Then again I do drive my car hard. Solid diesel engines that will run upto 200k with no major rebuild unlike the Hdi engines (lucky to do 100k without problems) Cheap to insure, insurance gp 5.
