Broke down on a busy dual carriageway with no hard shoulder and reported that it was a very dangerous location. Saga called back after 20 minutes to say it would be another hour and a half before they would get to me (although the local recovery service depot was only two miles away). I had to get the police to help and had two police cars controlling traffic while they organised a recovery for me which took about ten minutes to arrive. This was dangerous situation and the service on this occasion was a disgrace.

Reported problem to Saga 11.30am. Told somone would be with me 12.50. Got text saying delayed & would be 13.05, came 13.30 (2 hrs in total). AA man looked at my car & said I needed recovery. He reported it in at 2pm & I was told about 4pm. Received a text from Saga saying 15.35pm. I arranged with my local garage, 1 hr away, to get it to them before 5.30pm, when they closed so I could leave car & get courtesy car for work next day. Phoned Saga to let them know it was important that they got to me no later than 4.30pm. 3.50 pm Saga told me recovery truck 15 mins away. After several more phone calls by me, as they were not very good at updating me I was told everytime they were 15 mins away, which was clearly untrue. What made it worse I was paying 14p a minute for the pleasure of every call & had to go through the automated messaging before speaking with someone ON TIME RECOVERY(OTR) arrived just after 6pm, total of 6.30mins wait (4 hrs for OTR). Ended up being taken to OTR Depot 5 mins from my garage at 7.15PM. I was assured car would be delivered early next morning. Checked with garage at 2pm, no car. Contacted OTR who told me they were very busy couldn't confirm car would be delivered to garage that day. Contacted Saga to request they chase the company & was told I was not a priority as car was unaccompanied & I was not vulnerable. I was told it was no longer their business as they were recovery & that I should contact the complaints dept. I asked if I should have slept in the car overnight, & reminded them that it was down to them that the car was now unaccompanied & that the recovery from the day before was not complete & therefore it was still their business. Wasn't able/allowed to speak with a manager. Whole experience was bloody awful, neither SAGA or OTD (I ask myself OT for what, should OTD be prosecuted for false claims) have any idea about customer satisfaction, or what is reasonable to expect from a recovery service I was given the impression I should just be grateful when they turn up as they are very busy !!! I won't be insuring my car with SAGA again or buying into insurance company recovery service as it seems you are at the bottom of the pile when it comes to being 'recovered' If anyone has any good experiences & recommendations of who to get recovery insurance with, would appreciate the information. Car got to garage appx. 4pm total of 28.30 hours after call out !!!!

I'm actually an AA member, it's my parents that are with Saga, but this is my experience of Saga when I was out with them last night.
We broke down after 23:00 last night in a rather bad area. Due to the nature of the breakdown we needed a recovery truck only to be told it could (not would) take up to 3 hours. No updates from Saga at all until we called after 2 hours. The best part is the guy that picked us up (just within the 3 hours) informed us that he didn't even get the job until after the time Saga told us he was due with us.
It was not icy last night so that is not an excuse.
My own experience of my numerous other breakdown callouts with both the AA and previously the RAC has been much better and a much faster response.

I phoned and explained my car problem to a nice polite lady on the phone at Saga who told me someone would be there in just over 1 hour. At the end of that hour I had a phone call to tell me that the AA had handed my call to another firm who would be coming in 15 minutes. I then had a text message after 15 minutes telling me someone would be there in another 30 minutes! The chap who turned up was not a mechanic. He couldn't attempt to fix the problem but put my car on the truck and drove it to my regular garage. The previous breakdown cover I've had in the past always sent a mechanic. This is ludicrous.
I would have liked to know that 1. The correct story of what is wrong with the car gets to the other end of the chain and 2. sending a mechanic would be more helpful.

I am a Member of Saga who currently use the AA for Breakdown Recovery. This is my 1st year with them - Not impressed. Although attendance was very rapid, the Patrolman failed to issue an attendance report - Non Compliance. He recommended a local Garage which I later discovered charged double the cost of other Garages - Snapped wire to the alternator on a basic Ford Ka. Total cost £92.00!! When I complained to Saga they advised that I must take it up with the AA even though my Insurance policy is with Saga. Will definately not be renewing either my Car Insurance or Breakdown Cover with Saga. I was with Churchill and the Rac years and they were extremely professional.
