Good Points: You can hold it in your hand, it fits in your pocket, it looks like a camera. Takes decent pictures when it does come on (which is very rare).

Bad Points: Hardly ever switches on, batteries last around 15 minutes.

General comments: This is an appalling camera, and has to be the worst digital camera ever. We bought it because of the famous name 'Pentax' and it's reputation for SLR quality cameras. This was a big mistake and I'll never buy another pentax. This was a disastrous choice and this camera truly deserves to be thrown away. In fact it hardly ever switches on anyway, so we don't even try to use it now.

Standard AA batteries won't last 5mins. You need to get 2500Ni-CD 0r Ni-MH ones and they last much longer - about 40/50 shots I guess.

Pentax claims this is not a common problem but read for yourself.

Not sure. I have had Pentax cameras for many years and they have been excellent and almost trouble free, but I think build quality has dropped, but then it has with all makes unless you pay a high price! The Pentax Optio 50 well under the cost of a similar Canon or Nikon at the time and I have heard reports of failures with them, so what do you do?

This would no doubt be an acceptable camera but for the number of shots you get from perfectly decent batteries. One to avoid.

Beware of the Aiptek Pentax Optio 50 - battery life is non existent even when the camera is switched off a full set of batteries (mAh2500) will discharge completely over night. You can only get 30 or 40 photo's out of a set of batteries in a day in normal conditions. Pentax tell me that they have 'tested to specification' my camera so this would appear to be standard performance for the camera.

I returned my Pentax Optio 50 digital camera today. I told them at the camera shop that I did not get ONE SINGLE good picture out of this camera. Of course, I didn't take it outside in broad daylight, but THEN it's likely to be OK. They were not surprised by what I said, and they had nothing good to say about the camera. I guess when I bought it they were more interested in commission then getting me a good camera. I have always liked Canon, and the A520 is ultimately what I got. This camera suc ...

This review is for the Pentax Optio50 digicam, which is a very easy to use camera. It has manual controls, but my experience tought me to leave it mostly on the "Simple" mode and the internal computer will adjust it properly for you, in the most situations, especially at the parties, in low light environment. I tested it for close-ups too and it made great photos, with outstanding detail.
For the movie mode, make sure you get enough light, as there is no flash during video recording (that's th ...
