Good Points: Easy of use, great picture quality even when taking pictures of small children (they move so fast yet you get a perfect picture). Shutter speed is faster than you can believe and the usb connection speed is faster than any other camera I have used (given they have been a Kodak and a vivitar).
Bad Points: Slightly bigger than newer models, lcd screen maybe a bit smaller than it should. Not noticed any problems with battery life (using 2700mha AA), did not come with a camera case, very small internal memory (I think you get 16 pictures in full res'), but with a 2gb duo card it works fine. Not enough additional picture fx, and an awkward menu system not very user friendly, but still a great camera.
General comments: I think for the price you would be hard pushed to find a digital camera that has such a fast shutter speed and image quality it is well just astounding when you think it is only 4.1MP. I would recommend this to a friend as it produces far better photo's than anything in the same price bracket, with all micro electronic hardware they are susceptible to damage, if miss treated. I was disappointed that there was no carry case and Sony charge so much for that after market product. Overall though I think anyone would be happy with this product it does exactly what it says on the cardboard box IT TAKES GREAT PICTURES. Oh! the video recorder is great so smooth clear and with good sound too. You have got to love it really I look forward to playing with this camera for a few more years yet.

This camera looks great and seems to be a pretty decent buy. We purchased our daughter's cameras for just under $180.00 each last year. What bothers me the most about this whole thing is that their whole Christmas budget is $250.00, so they we're really robbed by this Sony DSC-S40 lemon.

I got this Sony CyberShot DSC-S40 camera for Christmas last year and it worked great for about a month. Then the lens cover got stuck and I couldn't turn it on or off for three or four months. I couldn't afford to have it fixed. Then, once I had gathered enough money to have it fixed, it magically fixed itself and worked okay for another few months, except the screen was messed up, the shutter would stick, etc.! Finally it broke completely. The shutter is stuck again. It's horrible. I wouldn't ...

I bought a Sony CyberShot DSC-S40 a year ago, it takes good photos I guess, a photo is a photo. I sent it back to Sony because it broke. They said they fixed it, got it back and it was still broken, so we had to send it back again! The shutter screwed up. We got it back and had to pay bout 150$ for it to be fixed or to get it returned unfixed, it would cost 100$. I hate Sony! Back to the bad points, someone in my family bought a new one and to my surprise it;s broken. All I want to do is take ...

The Sony CyberShot DSC-S40 digital camera is easy to use, and it has little shutter lag with automatic settings. However, the flash is terrible, and when you program the camera yourself the shutter lag increases dramatically. It also does not capture the light effectively, sometimes distorting pictures.
It's a good camera, unless you want to go beyond average photos and into playing with light, colour and contrast.

Overall, the Sony CyberShot DSC-S40 is a good digital camera, but I wish I had gone for a Nikon.

I wanted to buy a digital camera for a long time. I had been using SLRs for quite some time now. So went for the market best - Sony CyberShot DSCS40 was the least expensive and had all the features I wanted. Picture quality is amazing if you compare it to a Readyshot cam, but till now didn't find any match with a pro SLR (I have a cheap one - Vivitar, not a Nikon).
I guess I have to learn a thing or two to use it to its full extent. I saw a few shots taken with this cam on a website and I was a ...

Sony CyberShot DSC-S40 - I bought this camera 2 weeks ago. Takes great pictures. I bought a 256 Sandisk memory stick to go with it, but the stick was faulty and it was making the camera hard to operate. Circuit City replaced the memory stick it without even asking for a receipt, and the camera works fine. Chuck the batteries and buy rechargeable.

I was thinking of buying a Canon Powershot a510. However, I want a compact digital camera whose video capture capability is limited only by the memory media. I got that with the Sony DSC s40. Imagine the length of the video clip/s I can capture with high-capacity Memory Stick media! Considering its price. It packs a lot of punch, at 4.1 MP.

When I decided to buy a good digital camera, the Sony CyberShot DSC-S40 was not my choice. However, after considering the price I decided to buy this model. I have been using this for a month now. It is good, with cool features.
I was struggling for a few days with the camera trying all menu options as the manual was not very specific. After finding them, using it became child's play.
I tried with some features like taking pictures in dark, parties, and scenaries etc. Things are fine. The ...
