DO NOT USE STA TRAVEL My girlfriend and I used STA travel for our trip to Thailand. 1. In short the cash cards are a complete waste of time and money, they charge you £12 to buy the card with the selling point that they are easier to use then normal debit cards, this was not the case. We got charged over £5 altogether each time we withdrew money, and our withdrawal limit was £150; a higher charge then if i had of used my debit card. 2. I booked a multi-city flight package with STA Travel and I missed my first flight because it was a midnight flight and we confused the time. I have never missed a flight in my life. We rang the sales person straight away and she re-booked our flight for the next day. I completely expected to have to pay some type of fine and the flight. Sta travel, for some reason, were recommended as being the most reliable and cheapest travel company to book with for round the world tickets. The latter point may be true at initial sale and they certainly seemed good at first glance. Awful customer service. STA are efficient at point of sale however their subsequent customer service is abhorrent. We made a minor error with a double barrelled surname (slightly misplaced hyphen) when booking a round the world flight ticket (approx 8 flights) and they responded a month later when reviewing our passports saying they had entered our names incorrectly by complicating a middle name with a surname. The staff of STAtravel is very rude and unreasonable. Countless times I had to read their own policy to them on the phone and their response was "well thats not what it says on my instruction paper". I usually book holidays's online, but I'd never booked a tour, so though best in order to get everything I needed, get advice on visa's, get the dates correct I would phone through instead. I found STA very helpful and knowledgeable when booking my Cambodia & Vietnam trip, however.. I only booked flights through them. I found that their trips were very expensive, lucky for me the one I booked didn’t have any room so we had to find another. As an example of the price difference; Halong Bay cruise 2 nights 3 days on Prince Junk IV STA changed £593 where as I sourced it for £251. Would never use them again. Although I live in the UK and paying with a UK debit card they wanted to charge me 13 pound to use it because I was phoning from Amsterdam! Sta have been terrible in regards to booking flights. The man working in the store made a huge error as he entered our names wrongly into the flight details, he did this TWICE. When we informed him of the mistake at a later point he proceeded to tell us that it was our fault, he was extremely nasty and rude and unaplogetic and told us we had to PAY FOR 2 NEW FLIGHTS when HE HAD MADE THE MISTAKE. My daughter booked her gap year flights and insurance through STA. She also purchased the STA card. She paid well over £300 for the premium insurance. When I looked at the policy I wrote a list of questions for her to ask. Tried to get a flight changed due to a relative in intensive care. Ten phone calls at premium rate but never managed to change even though they told me when I bought the ticket it could be changed for a fee. Lots of broken promises to call back. The relative died before we could get there. The worst of their representatives told me he could only deal with emergencies and had other customers waiting. “Sta travel insurance is the worst”

Currently travelling in Nepal & came down with an illness. Rather than visit the hospital I tried to contact my insurance company to seek the 24 hour medical assistance that they claim to provide so that I could possibly save myself a trip to the doctors. I've contacted them numerous times through emails & telephone calls with totally unhelpful replies. “£800 pound down the drain”

3 weeks ago I purchased a single ticket to fly from Sydney to the UK (as I already had a single ticket booked for UK to Sydney). It cost £800 for the single flight Sydney to Birmingham. Due to unforeseen circumstances I have had to cancel this flight back to the UK as i will be staying in Sydney indefinitely. The flight is due to depart Sydney in 6 weeks time. I agree with this review completely. I am in the same bind and sta representatives are taking forever to reply to my queries through email (because I am overseas). They have told me that I am unable to change to a return date which is later than what I have booked because there is a policy that states that the first ticket to the date of the return ticket must be a maximum of 4 months and no more. This is not an airline policy as I called the airline hoping that I can change it after being told by sta it is an airline policy. Unfortunately the airline is unable to change my flight on its own and has required me to go back to sta to change it. The consultation digressed to a point where I have now asked about cancellation charges and refunds of which I am suspecting sta is deliberately taking their own sweet time to answer it. After reading many reviews, I have come to terms that £600 would probably be flushed down the toilet because I made the mistake of booking with sta instead of the airline.

I've been forced to use STA on a number of occasions. Firstly the positive (singular!) They are the cheapest and most trustworthy site to book through online. Negatives: Unfriendly staff! Horrible, robotic smarmy recruitment consultantesque trolls, all of them. “They will lie to you REPEATEDLY ”

At first they had me believing this was a friendly and efficient travel service, at least until I had to cancel my flight due to schooling issues(it was a study abroad trip). I contacted them on the 8th of August and was told I would have my refund in 7-10 business days, and the girl assured me it would most likely be even less time.
