I have hosted several websites with 1&1 over many years and, over the last two, have experienced a marked decline in standards. Their support people are in Jakarta and it is rare to speak to the same one twice, or for any of them to take personal control of an issue. I am confident that many simply fob you off with comments such as 'I will escalate this issue', which invariably means that you put the phone down and nothing happens. As so many others have done I made the mistake of trying the free trial. I went for the basic web package but then found it wasn't, suitable so I upgraded to the next one up. I have never encountered customer support more frustrating or moronic than 1&1's. I've spent the past few days engaging with customer support over what should be a very simple task. The only responses I've been receiving are links to FAQ sections and what look like canned emails with my name inserted at the top. Oneandone (UK) rate themselves as the best for customer service and pricing, I rate them incredibly low and am still in constant discussion as they try to put things right. We are a web design company in the UK (we also sell phone numbers) and our hosted servdr with Oneandone internet was due to go down for some planned maintenance last night. 7 Hours after it should have been fixed we are still without internet. When i speak to their customer service team(if you can call them that!) we get nowhere at all. NO SLA, no sorry just we are working on it.

Couldn't get online cancellation service to work and couldn't get anyone to respond to emails. I was instead referred to debt collection agency requesting penalty payment as well as year's payment. Long telephone calls and their side hanging up when they didn't have a clue what was happening then they suspended my account whilst I was in hospital. Absolutely none whatsoever. Robust online management system
Customer service can be sometimes unhelpful in my experience, I believe, not based in the same country as the user it seems. Also the customer service do not know as much about the services as I would expect as far as I am concerned.
I have used 1and1 for over 3 years with 11 domains registered or transferred. I have had in total 6 issues of which 3 were serious. However, I do still recommend one and one web hosting.

I do not recommend OneandOne even if it is a cheap web hosting company. It's probably cheap for a reason. After having the misfortune of hosting several sites with them on various hosting packages I am continuing to experience loads of downtime without any warning as far as I am concerned. I only notice when i am trying to connect to my server and cant, then i look at all my sits and they are down. For the umpteenth time!
When I phone support they refuse to put me through to the complaints...

Usually bullet proof, hard to deal with when I do get a problem as far as I am concerned.
I like the admin user interface and most of the time it is bang on but for someone trying to host a php/mysql site with their stupid remote sql database loading it can get a bit frustrating.
I am thinking of buying a dedicated box from them for wore use but if they cant keep my hobby gaming website up what chance have they got with a proper one.

It seems some of the reviewers want an awful lot for peanuts. My own experience is good. My site: www.food-excellence.com has been with 1&1 for over four years - without regret. I use their (free) website creator to upload images etc to my site and everything runs smooth and efficient. Access to the site is fast and I can upload NEWS in minutes from anywhere.
Having said all that a little tweaking would make the wscreator an even better visual interface. A happy foodie...

I have had 1&1 double-invoice and double-charge me for 6 of my domains. They have yet to refund me. Their excuse? None. Not even - sorry.
They keep changing my files and .htaccess files without my approval. They are currently blacklisted by Hotmail/MSN and are doing nothing to fix that.
Their customer service is horrible, rude and incompetent. I have to email them about 20 times to get anything sorted. They appear to be not technically trained.

I am too having lots of problems with 1 and 1. Have you seen the guarantee they offer at their website? 99.99 per cent uptime! I have never yet getting this uptime in any month I have been with them. I rang their support number and asked how they backed this up, they just ignored the question and kept telling me they are doing everything they can to get it working - that's not a guarantee!

After having had various teething problems when I initially joined 1and1 web hosting, everything seemed to be fine until the end of last month, when all my web space was moved to an 'auxiliary' server, because apparently I was using too much bandwidth or was over some quota.
The fact that I've never once come close to using the available bandwidth (20Gb per month), and I use only 3% of my file allocations and 60% of the available space, the same argument is being put forward again and again...

Difficult to follow even using their own One and One templates. Takes ages to set up a site.
Service extremely poor. E,mail response varies from 10 mins to 4 days !
Telephone help:- forget it. They keep you hanging on for 30 mins then cut you off.
Recently, I kept getting their site telling me that my password was not recognised even though they had confirmed it by E.mail. I could not edit my site for a week !
Avoid this company if you want to spend more time running your affairs than you do...

For cheap hosting, and a good do anything provider they're great; just make sure you know what you're doing and you can do it via their extensive control panel. Anything out of the ordinary is a struggle though.
I think they're also struggling for bandwidth, as although you get 100Mb, I've never reached that (and I've even tried transferring multiple streams between 1&1 servers, so shouldn't leave their backbone). Response times are good however, just don't expect more than 300-400kb per...

currently they have averaged 2wks+ in replying to the most basic of queries all be it very important ones, fortunately I have been able to get hold of a customer service member, after an overly long wait, that they cannot be of any help

The main problem is that One And One's servers are based in Germany (Schlund) meaning that the IP address is from Germany. The real world effect of this is that Google is highly unlikely to rank any site on a One And One server reasonably for UK searches and visitors, since it sees the site as 'German' and not relevant to UK searches. I'm not sure what has changed but trying to hear a voice from the USA on a poor telephone connection did nothing to resolve problems. Email support takes many days to get any response if any.

I have to agree with you on this. I've been a One and One customer for about 3 years now with several domains hosted by them; They used to offer a great service and value. This Christmas I needed their technical help on what should have been a simple problem. I made five attempts to ring their 24/7 support. Each time I gave up after listening to their 60's music after 15 minutes. Of the 5 emails I also sent, I received a reply 9 days later, telling me if I wanted better support to ring their 24/7 support line.

Well at first One and One seemed good, I payed for my domain and that was that, over 3 years passed and suddenly my domain stopped working, I went to check and it turned out my credit card (well it wasn't mine it was my friends) had expired shortly after the first payment so THREE years worth of invoices hadn't been payed, and One and One didn't even bother to inform me, so as well as not accepting debit cards, I had to find another credit card to pay off the £30 (3x£10) before they unlocked... I had no access to my email and my webspace was blocked, all due to a credit card that had expired -- which I did not realise, and OneAndOne did not have the initiative to actually inform me that it had expired, so 1 month later they just cut me off. Their rates may not be as competitive as some other hosting companies, but they are well established, whereas a lot of other hosting companies are just people with servers at home. No thanks. Where do I start? I have suffered at the hands of the OneAndOne Web Hosting Company. They offer dreadful support, are very unreliable, and extremely rude. I had the phone hung up on me on 4 out of 11 calls in one week.
If you run a business then you would be taking a big risk!

Not the best of service. I like your blog logging all the contact with one and one and like you say the dates just didn't allow for 14 days to cancel.
I don't think they would have a leg to stand on if they tried to pursue through the courts.
Try a decent host.
