“Terrible build quality”

★☆☆☆☆

written by domhyde on 27/06/2012

Mine had just done 60,000 miles. Window regulators failed, Renault quote £350 per door and there is a very high failure rate. Dash completely failed and had to be replaced, again common fault but not good when you want to sell the car. If your clutch goes be prepared to pay £1,200 for replacement clutch and flywheel at independent garage (Renault quoted £3500)! Remote locking no longer works. Poor waterproofing so water gets into doors and messes with electric. Intercooler also failed. In brief the car ostensibly seemed good value but the build quality is so low that in my case repair bills quickly exceeded the value of the car. My advice would be never buy any Renault. The company will stonewall you at every turn, denying responsibility and I have done repairs only to find that Renault later recalled on those issues. In brief ignore Parkers review and look at owners forums to get an idea of the amount of misery one of these heaps of junk can cause

Even if it's cheap, even if it looks good, even if your friend has it and likes it. If you feel you start warming up towards it, run for the hills and don't come back until you've walked it off. I've owned this car and yet my mechanic had it for longer at his place than I did. Car doesn't start and doesn't drive and when it does lights start flashing, doors are locking and unlocking themselves, wipers come on and off all that when you drive 50 miles per hour in heavy traffic. That is worse than Paranormal Activity 3. This car should be exorcised and buried on the crossroads during full moon.

“Never never never never buy a Renault ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 22/10/2011

Bought a Grand Scenic 1.6 VVT because it looked good car for a growing family. Regret it totally now! Worst car I've ever owned and definitely worst car ever driven. Horribly under powered, massive problem which causes it to stall while pulling away when the engine is cold (Renault aware but refuse to admit it is a dangerous fault!) try pulling out of a busy junction and the engine stalls dangerous in my book! Now the dash board flashes and resets (but it's ok BBC watchdog got then to sort this problem!) please don't be fooled by the practical side of the car, it's rubbish, WORST CAR EVER!

I got the 2004 dynamique 1.5 dci 80bhp. Owned for 4 years. Amazing economy, great family car. Had the common electrical faults heater blower and elec windows. Have recently found out that windows can be repaired under warranty by Renault if car is under 7 yes old & under 100,000 miles. This is a £250-£300 job & Renault ask for a customer contribution of about £60. Ring a few dealers if one pleads ignorance to this as it's not been well publicised by them. My motor booked in for this repair. The electrics are certainly the weak points of this fantastic little package which is overall superb, cheap tax & insurance I paying £212 fully comp with protection & wife is learner driver. Only let downs to date are the windows (n/side), heater blower & earth strap broke. The economy is outstanding, car is not fast but steering is light & precise & keeps up on m/way. Interior a little flimsy but I can live with that. Dnynamique spec dark grey so good if you got kids. Buy one but get a decent comprehensive warranty that covers everything!

Had our Scenic for about 8 years. Aside from regular coil issues it has done 108k now and nothing major has gone wrong. It will certainly not light up your life but for a growing family including holidays in France Ireland etc I cannot fault it.
It is a good basic family car that copes with all we have thrown at it. We will likely change it soon as we may be pushing the boundaries a little but would certainly consider another.

“I bought my Renault Megan Scenic not quite two years...”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 08/01/2010

I bought my Renault Megan Scenic not quite two years ago from Carcraft. Within a month the coils went. I have had nothing but bad luck with this vehicle. The stering lock went and even though under 5 year warranty, NAC did not want to know as they said the Warranty did not cover. I have also had a new clutch, breaks redone, and while comming back on our Christmas break the exhaust has packed up, most likely the catty.
I would not reccommend this car to anyone.

I have had the same problem with my Renault scenic, as it is a 54 plate. I also got it from Carcraft (never again). Also have NAC 5 year warranty, again they are bloody useless.

“I have a 55 plate Renault Scenic Dynamique 1.6 16v,...”

★★☆☆☆

written by Kaka1 on 18/01/2009

I have a 55 plate Renault Scenic Dynamique 1.6 16v, from 12 mths old (but only had 11 miles on the clock). All four coils have had to be replaced, my brakes are atrocious, they lock at nothing. My electrics have just gone. On arriving at work on a wet day the rear window decided to go down as I locked the car - yeah makes sense to me too. Would not go back up. Had it in and the whole electrics, including door locking is up the spout. For a car I have had 2 and a half years from new it is a DISGRACE. I found the Renault dealers were most unhelpful. I only checked this site after I bought the Renault Scenic Dynamique 1.6 16v, very foolish and an expensive mistake for me. Buying another car this weekend, and no it's NOT a Renault.

I also have a 55 plate Renault, and just last weekend, I also have had my rear passenger window go down as the doors were locked and not yet had it fixed. Have other people had this problem? If so can anyone please tell me what the problem was?

“Plenty of leg room both in the front and rear.”

written by stevieg275 on 04/01/2009

Plenty of leg room both in the front and rear.
Rear seats slide forward for several inches additional boot space.
Excellent boot space for large loads as the rear seats fold so far forward.
Under seat and under floor carpet storage compartments are good for small items.
Great to drive the automatic version, particularly with the handbrake releasing automatically when you press the accelerator.
I probably should have looked for a diesel version.

If i were to buy this vehicle again I would get it in a 1.8 or 2.0 litre engine, as I think there's not enough power with the climate control on when overtaking or going uphill.

We love our 03 1.5 dci (82) Renault Scenic ll. Drives great, loads of room, low at the back fo loading/unloading. With one exception, the dash board sometimes, can be twice daily or only once a week will reset all the trip settings to 0, also the clock to 0.00. The clock being the biggest pain. All the warning lights come on for about 2 seconds then 0.00. The fuel consumption is awesome 62 mpg, and very easy on tyre wear.

written by on 25/05/2008

The number if faults I have had with my 53 Plate Renault Scenic have been terrible. I had the older shape Scenic with no problems before upgrading. The front nearside window mechanism failed costing £200 to replace. I had a loud crunching noise when starting the car. This turned out to be a Defaser Pulley costing an arm and a leg to fix. Now the dashboard has failed and needs replacing. All these faults seem to be inherrent to the car after speaking to other people who drive this car. simply the worst car i have ever purchased. In my view leave well alone unless still under warranty.

search for watchdog the dashboard complaint is known to them and you will get it fixed at a dealership for £100. I after some e mails to renault customer service was palmed of with no longer under warranty. They really should recall these cars but as usual costs too much and they will not admit anything

Ignition coils went twice and were replaced due to a fault in the manufacturing of the coils.
Renault replaced 1st set free of charge under warrenty.
The second set out of warrenty was also replaced free after it was found out that it was the coils problem. Good car but watch out for those coils and if you have problems contact Renault direct.

This is the third generation of the car that invented the "Mini MPV" concept, and they still haven't sorted everything out. It's a good idea, but the execution is not as good as a decent estate car. If you really need 7 seats, then you're stuffed. Otherwise, don't bother.

written by linziloo on 04/10/2007

This is my second Scenic. Found it hard to adjust to not having a handbrake or key ignition. Kids love it as it has sun blinds built in the back. Only problem I have had so far is I was driving this morning and the car began to vibrate, looked at the display and warning light was flashing and message said to check emissions. Took it to the a Renault garage straight away as was advised not to drive the car. They looked at it and told me that one of the coils had gone but they replaced all four as a recall had been issued for specific models and they replaced all four free of charge (and washed the car). Very honest garage as I had no idea of the recall and would have paid for the repairs.

★★☆☆☆

written by lowbo69 on 16/08/2006

This is the plus version. I bought my Renault Scenic Dynamique 1.6 16v from brand new. Comfortable drive, nice driving position, climate control is good, but in really hot weather ( which we seem to get a great deal of now) cannot cope with keeping the cab really cool. Fairly good on fuel consumption when all aspects of the engine are running well. Some nice features and storage for a small family. Twin sunroofs but not used that often due to climate control on the air con. Have had to replace a lot of parts on this model. ( maybe a Friday afternoon car). The front offside shock had to be replaced within 5000 miles. Coils have had to be replaced, (this is an ongoing problem for Renault,) but only managed to get them done on warranty after a battle, despite Renault knowing they are a design fault! Rear offside shock has had to be replaced at 18,000 miles (could it be all the road humps?). Again, as a good will gesture we managed to get this replaced on warranty. Now we have a squeaking, which sounds to me to be a wheel bearing but cannot track it down, so will once again have to go into the dealership! Only 29,000 on the clock! We do struggle with space when off on holidays, with only two children, but another on the way it looks like we will have to move up to a reliable Japanese MVP with space.

“This is our third Scenic and each one has improved on...”

★★★★☆

written by PaulB UK on 27/03/2006

This is our third Scenic and each one has improved on the one before. The fact that the computer is taking over more and more functions is a mixed blessing, especially the handbrake. Although my wife adapted quickly it's taken me longer as my brain keeps telling me it is down below on the left and I have to swap hands on the wheel to activate it on the dashboard to the right! As a tall person I've found the seat adjustment a little more tricky than previously(if I was not regularly sharing with my wife perhaps this wouldn't be such a problem). Whilst the squab and the back are easier to reach and more sensitive, the steering wheel seems more restricted in its travel and I have had to do a lot more playing about to get my knees at a comfortable angle that clears the wheel. The battery failed in the ignition card (it's supposed to last 2 years) and the manual which would have explained things was locked inside. Finally, after 3 months use we have discovered that it has a built-in alarm. It only came to light when my daughter went back to wait in the car whilst out shopping. No sooner had she closed the door than it went off, stopping on its own after a couple of minutes. Then the other day I got in, reached for the belt and off it went. I was able to start and drive away but it didn't stop. Eventually, I pulled up, got out and locked the door and then got back in again and it stopped. There is nothing in the handbook about it and I am a little nervous that it could happen again. If anyone has experienced this please comment.

We have been really happy with the Scenic as an overall experience and love the height available and practicality. However, the technical problems with the coil have overshadowed our pleasure of the vehicle and could do with more horse-power, especially on hills and over-taking.

Ivan1890's Response to Bridgenduser's Review

Written on: 12/03/2006

This is very interesting. I had the same regular coils problem on my wife's 4 litre Jaguar V8 - it was seemingly endless! Some owners of that model had no such problem, whilst others suffered the same fate as ourselves and various garages could offer us no explanation. (Unfortunately now in the U.K. there are very few highly qualified mechanics and dealerships of most manufacturers often do not appear to know what they are doing. One recently telephoned me for advice so that they could attempt a repair on a customer's vehicle!) Regarding your vehicle being underpowered - unfortunately most car owners try to marry economy and performance and they are ill bedfellows. I drive a 6.75 litre Bentley for fun, and a 1.25 litre Punto for economy and regard compromises as exactly that. I rarely compromise. But, that's me - an extremist. Everyone to their own.

Hi there, I had the same problem. I have the 2nd Scenic now which has an Automatic Gear. This is fantastic but the Coils problem remains. Luckily I had to get them replaced only once on the car and this was done within Warranty. However on the old Scenic I had to get them replaced at least once a year.
My Dealer is constantly saying that Renault knows about this issue and they have started using different parts. We will have to wait and see I suppose.

The Driving though is fantastic, isn't it?
