Good Points: Fantastic battery life which exceeds many other flash players from other brands such as iPod. iPod shuffle has only an average of just 14 hours compared to the Sony with 50 hours. The nice feature with the E407 is that is has a 3 minute charge for 3 hours playback. I tried it but ended up charging it for a few minutes more, the battery last almost too long. The polycarbonate (I think?) screen it very tough and durable. If your the kind of people who like their gadgets in pristine conditon after a few months of use, the E407 is the way to go. I had it for over 6 months and normal day to day abrasion from clothes etc. have not scrathed the screen at all. Obviously there are the very minute nano-line scrathes that you will see if you shine it against the light at an angle and concentrate to look. The back of the player is aluminium and strong. The play buttons etc are easy to use and getting use to. It is quite easy to use it one handed - but takes time. You can adjust the treble and bass and can have them preset in 2 modes so you don't have to readjust them again. The 'Organic EL' display is really bright at night and is much like an LED - bright and economical in energy consumption. It's not very good in the day though, well ig uess any screen won't be that good in the daytime. Sound quality is very good depending on your choice of earphones etc. If you ever get used to the Sonicstage software, the Atrac3 Plus and other formats that they convert your music into is actually very good. I haven't noticed any quality lost in the sound. I've managed to fit about 300 songs of various formats, mainly in atrac3 onto my 1GB Sony. Their claim of up to 395 songs is overexaggered and is based on strict length of songs and other rubbish.
Bad Points: Awful software. It takes about an hour to get used to. After that it becomes quite easy to transfer music, but still, very badly designed software. Not user friendly compared to iTunes. The bog standard earphones are pretty good and are quite durable. Sound quality depends on your personal preference as I find some cheaper earphones are better than £30 in ear ones. It would have been good it the player had a direct usb connection instead of a cable. The newer Sony players that have come out this year (2006 June) have that feature.
General comments: I've heard from other reviews that you cannot put protected songs from WMP onto this Sony NW-E407 player. I think this is true, but I have not encountered this problem. All my song on from WMP are stated 'no' on the protected column (on the far right). If you are someone who downloads songs from Limewire, Kazaa etc. then I should not think you will encounter any problems as I have tried this. Although I don't recommmend downloading songs from Limewire or Kazaa etc as they are most likely bundled with spyware and it may be 'illegal' sharing of songs.
The Sony also comes with a plastic clip which clips on to the player itself. It's fairly strong when connected to the player but very weak and can snap if not. I hardly use it as I find it gets in the way.

I have a Sony NW-E407 MP3 player and you would think that a company like Sony would be able to design software that works on all versions of Windows, post 1998...
You would think that when you buy from a Sony Centre on the high street, you would be buying directly from a Sony shop...

I've had the Sony NW-E407 MP3 player for about half a year now, and it's still in pristine condition. I've dropped it a couple of times, but it's still working fine. Battery life is outstanding, and if you charge it for 2 hours, then the battery life will last for roughly 2 weeks (it does for me, and I listen to it on the go).
What I don't like is that it doesn't come with a neck-strap. This is because, if I use my extension lead too much it starts to split. I stopped using it and I had to b ...

The Sony NW-E407 portable MP3 player is an excellent player, that I bought after reading previous reviews on here. Apart from having to use the Sony Connect to download new music (which is a bit dearer than Tesco), it's fantastic!
The software is easy to load and self-explanatory; and once loaded, it gives brilliant organisational capabilities for your music. Tracks are easy and quick to transfer. My hubby has already become an MP3 widower!

I really like the Sony NW-E407 MP3 player. 1GB is enough for me, and you can search for your tunes really easily according to group/artist/album. It looks really smart and is a good size. You can change your display to show different information, and it is pretty simple to work. I had no problems with transferring songs onto it despite a pretty dud computer.
This is definitely a good choice for someone looking for a smaller MP3 player in the £100 price range, with 1GB storage capacity. I ...

The Sony NW-E407 MP3 player is a very intelligent compact machine by Sony, and it is easy to operate. It has easy functions, and yet many to choose from. 1Gb gives unlimited storage to carry your favourite music.
A best buy for this Christmas, and highly recommended!

Personally, I would rate the Sony NW-E407 player 8/10, due to its efficient capabilities that fulfills most of my needs for a decent MP3 player. As I've listed above, there are pros and cons to this player. However, I bought it for a pretty cheap price (not gonna bother mentioning the company name I bought it from) so what the heck, I'm happy with it. Besides, it was new...or at least 2 months ago:P. So people who are reading this review, this is certainly a GOOD player!
However, if you w ...

This player is awesome! It's very small but has a zinc die-cast case, making it pretty rugged. The battery life is amazing at 50hrs and the charge time is miniscule (30 min for 80% charge). R & D money well spent, Sony! And the sound quality is spectacular, even without any enhancement (just flat sound) it sounds better than any iPod I've ever heard! The display is really crisp and bright for something so small. And amazingly, they've stuffed a "search" feature into this thing.....

I bought the Sony NW-E407 mp3 player, not because it has the looks, the feature, the battery life and that it is very small (similar size than the Philip audio key 512mb), but it will actually enable me to convert all the song to ATRAC format which will reduce the size of the song originally and yet still producing high quality of music (although it takes time to process it).
However, the downside of this mp3 player is that in order to access to your music on the computer, you must have the s ...

I love my Sony NW-E407 Network Walkman, it's good looking and the features are everything you would want or need from a 1Gb flash player. The display is looks fantastic and is easy to read, although in bright sunlight may be difficult to see. Navigating your music is simple, with an easy to understand grouping and menu system. The battery life is simply astounding, with SONY claiming at least 50 hours, and charge times via USB are miniscule. It is ultralight and compact, but feels quite durable. ...
