“I was some 300 miles from home when the car started...”

I was some 300 miles from home when the car started over heating.Traffic was heavy and when the alarm sounded. I managed to pull off the road. I am a female and my knowledge of engines is not great. I telephoned GEM and an engineer was with me within an hour. He found the problem (Broken clip on radiator hose). he went and collected a new clip, repaired the issue and i was able to proceed on my journey without further problems. I had a tyre burst on m5 . This is the first time I have needed gem help. They were brilliant. The not only arranged prompt pick up of myself and wife and car but also at my request booked me in at quick fit for a new tyre after phoning round to find the best price for my particular tyre. Despite serious delays on the m5, the help was prompt and efficient and gem kept in touch right the way through the trauma to make sure I was getting sorted out satisfactorily. My car with an automatic box would not change gear, we broke down just off the M25 in a very busy area with 2 small children. The operator was most helpful, knowledgably and did all she could to make best of the situation. The recovery chaps were not too long in attending and the chap who recovered our vehicle and took us home was very pleasant. A puncture at 70 years of age and with your husband away leaves you desperate for help. I phoned Gem who handled my problem efficently and not only arranged for a breakdown lorry to come to my assistance but also phoned to reassure me it was on its way and also phoned afterwards to ensure I was happy with the service - yes a good nights sleep following a major incident for an old lady. This was the first time I had to use GEM despite being a member for a while. The operator had some difficulty with some details; not sure if it was my accent or a bad line and this element took quite a while with very detailed questions. “Recovered and taken to garage of my choice one hour away”

Excellent service. I have been a member for just over 2 years and this is the first time I have had to use GEM. We were three hundred miles from home and had two days of our holiday left and were recovered at 5pm. A new power steering unit was fitted by a local garage and we were on the road again at 12 noon the following day. Our contact with GEM was excellent and they kept us fully informed the whole time. The breakdown app was easy to use. When I phoned, the staff were very efficient and thorough. The breakdown company who was called out was very good. They came out within the time which they specified. The mechanic did his utmost to fix my car at the scene. Unfortunately, as it is a classic camper van he did not carry the spare parts which he needed to fix it and so it had to be repatriated back to my specified address. Waited 3 hours for a flat bed truck to recover my vehicle which I had advised GEM was incapacitated. Seems a first engineer has to verify the client assessment. GEM's local supplier also phoned me to as "if it could wait until tomorrow" !! and "was there any way I could get myself home without accompanying the recovery" !!?? “Left at the roadside for three hours with two small...”

I have been a member of GEM Motoring Assist for more than 8 years. In that time I have used them three times. No problem with the first two calls but this occasion was appalling. Having broken down on the A27 near Chichester with my six year old son and three year old daughter I was told we were a priority and assistance would be with us in 45 minutes. The help from the GEM telephone staff was excellent. They kept contacting the recovery company for updates. However, an almost 3 hour wait is not acceptable. I have been a member of GEM now for some 40-odd years, having previously been disappointed by my former choice on a couple of occasions with extreme delays caused by ‘patrolman overload’. I can honestly say that in all of those 40+ years I have never had cause to be disappointed with the service offered and operated by GEM.
