“Can't seem to load new cartridges”

Written on: 12/06/2013 by Russky1969 (1 review written)

I bought this gun last year and have only put about 60 shots through it. The last time I replaced the co2 cartridges though the gun wasn't recharged and was only firing pellets intermittently, and even then only about 15 yards range. If anyone can suggest what I'm doing wrong I'd be really grateful. Otherwise, with a scope and silencer on it I don't think there is anything out there that can match this rifle for the money. There's a video on YouTube that shows you how to adjust what can be a… Read Full Review

Sadly my new SMK .22 with large gas cartridge discharged its gas between the barrel and lower chamber on its first outing. All instructions were followed to the word including using PTFE. However, the barrel frosted over just in front of the breach with gas charging out everywhere and it will not discharge a single pellet.

Why can the Chinese not at the very least test their creations, especially as they have built up their reputation on questionable quality. This was to be spending Christmas Day afternoon with my son and his first air gun. A pretty disappointing Christmas due to poor workmanship. Buy British!

“SMK XS78CO2 ”

Powerful & accurate with scope. Stiff bolt & trigger to start with & fiddly to load under scope. Silencer reduces gun noise to less than that coming from pellet trap. Trigger getting easier with use & may need "friendly" pellets to get the best out of it. Well made for the price… Read Full Review

As you undo the end cap about five turns before the end there's a hole in the thread, the gas should start to hiss out, wait until it stops hissing!

you have to turn the cap off vey very slowly, then you will hear the remainder of the gas escaping. once it has escaping then you can carry on unscrewing the cap until it comes off, but still do it very slowly

Written on: 19/03/2010 by shootermcgavin (1 review written)

its pretty well priced for what it is and from 20 yards i killed a rabbit but its pretty inhumane because even with two co2's i struggled to better 30 to 35 full powered shots and thats only about 9 ft-lb's, you may run into the problem like i did by having to shoot a rabbit 4 or 5 times to kill it, best gun to go for if you want a co2 is a 850 air magnum or if you dont want to spend that much a crosman rabbit stopper. This gun is only good for plinking or small animals close up but for that… Read Full Review

You had to shoot it 4 or 5 times to kill it! If you realise your gun isnt powerful enough then you should of dispatched it by hand. If you dont know how to do it then you shouldnt be pulling the trigger on a live target.

bought this gun in standard as i wanted accuracy over power. as standard, it took around 100 pellets to bed in. power was good untill i started looking on tuning websites. Have just finished polishing and porting this gun and cant beleive what i difference it makes. anyone can do this, all you need is a seal kit of ebay £7, few grades of wet and dry, a drill, 3 & 3.5mm drill bit a file, and a peice of dowling wood. Power has greatly gone up and could easily take out game at 40 yards using air… Read Full Review

What an excellent gun the SMK XS78C023 is, it actually beats other air rifles that are twice as much as this , there isnt a spring air rifle that can match it for accuracy , if you like me are into shooting a lot then gear up to bulk fill and you will find the cost of c02 going down by a considerable margin .
There are a multitude of tuning tips out for this rifle that will take it comfortably to 11.3 lbs which is a very nice number . Using rws superdomes i get lead on lead at 20… Read Full Review

Written on: 20/09/2009 by tomhagen (5 reviews written)

Well finished good looking gun, low recoil. Co2 means that pressure is a bit variable and so accuracy suffers through inconsistency. Handles nicely, well balanced. In retrospect would have bought one with scope and silencer, maybe even big 88g canister version.

I have the SMK QB78 Deluxe .22 version, again in retrospect the .177 would have been more accurate and enough power for the job (vermin hunting) but .22 flat heads work well at close range.

The moving parts, trigger, safety, bolt… Read Full Review

Written on: 29/05/2009 by DRH333 (1 review written)

Had this SMK XS78CO2 rifle for nearly a year, for target shooting. Like the weight, and it is accurate with a scope, as others have said. I have a major problem with the screw valve where the two CO2 cylinders go. The blurb says that it can be tightened by hand, but I have to use mole grips to get the cones to pierce both cylinders!! Have ruined the looks of this end cap!… Read Full Review

DRH333 (review 8)

cock the bolt - apply safety catch - insert capsules - replace chamber cap by hand as tight as poss - undo 1/4 turn to release co2 from innermost capsule - blank fire (no pellet) - (this pierces the outer capsule) - load and fire away.

Jedoi's Response to DRH333's Review

Written on: 26/01/2011

You don't actually have to tighten the cap with mole grips to pierce the second Co2 caplet ... the first one is pierced by (as mentioned before) tightening the cap fully then backing it off 1/4 of a turn (only needs fully tightening by hand, you should NEVER need mole grips) ... then ... the second caplet gets pierced automatically when you fire the gun by a piercing pin that pops out behind the valve which is struck by the hammer.

If you look down the tube with a torch or other bright light, you should see the second piercing pin just inside the centre of the aluminium valve housing.

Nothing on these guns needs to be super-tight. Everything just needs to be "nipped up".

Hope this helps someone ;)

Very low price for what you get. I prefer the .22 Deluxe version. No Recoil, Low price, easy to work on, can beat guns costing a lot more if you tune them. Trigger can be made good. The Deluxe has fibre optic sights that are good for Close range vermin. You can fit a Telescopic sight easy. Very light. Can be tuned to the legal limit in .22 and usually in .177. You have to do a bit of work to make them very good. They need Co2 bottles to run. Power is between 6 to 8 ft lbs… Read Full Review

Written on: 09/08/2008 by Tim Pullman (1 review written)

As I said the iron sights are very basic, but stick a halfway decent scope on and you have a very good rifle, with no scope creep due to recoil that you sometimes get on a a springer. The rifle itself is very quiet, and with a suppressor attached the only sound is the pellet hitting the target. I haven't had the rifle long enough to know if there are any inherent problems, but the build quality seems very good. It does seem to prefer certain pellets, My rifle seems to function best with… Read Full Review
