PROS: Looks good (Chrome version). Good range of attachments. Motor sounds reassuringly up to the job. Easiest way to make breadcrumbs. Simple to use. CONS: Plastic bowl deteriorates very quickly when washed in the dishwasher. Lid of plastic bowl has virtually broken apart, making it unusable. Plastic gradually breaking off the blade of the main cutting attachment despite never having been washed in the dishwasher (this started to happen quite early on in its life; I guess the tiny bits of plastic which wore off over time ended up in my food!). Spillage of liquid if you try to blitz soup (a blender is much better for that). When using the smaller bowl to make sauces, it splashes over the lid and the main bowl too, which causes unnecessary washing up. Only one speed setting plus pulse. Replacement parts very expensive. IN GENERAL: The machine itself seems to be solid and, as a machine which operates a motor at one single speed, it is fine. The plastic attachments - despite the great claims of the manufacturer regarding the quality - are weak, and let it down. Washing in the dishwasher has evidently done some damage (though the manufacturer claims the attachments are dishwasher-proof among the other claims), and I think the force it has required to get it to lock in place hasn't helped either. I now have the dilemma of deciding whether to replace the worn parts (main bowl and lid - without which the machine is unusable - and blade) at a high cost just to continue using the machine, or to purchase a replacement food processor from another manufacturer (similar or less cost, but perhaps an inferior motor) and dump the Magimix.

The egg whisk is useless, the gears in it seem to stop it going faster. I am now going to nhave to buy a hand mixer

Was given this as a wedding present 3yrs ago and motor has gone bang after mixing a chocolate cake mix. Due to over zealous cleaning the paper serial number on the base has been washed away and Magimix head office has refused to repair. They agreed that the machine looks new but because I cant produce a receipt they will not honour warranty. My issue is why but a paper serial number on a kitchen appliance that is cleaned in water and by them then looking at the machine and saying that it has had very little use then telling me that its bad luck I don't have a receipt to prove its not over 12yrs old. MAGIMIX YOUR LET ME AND YOUR REPUTATION DOWN.

I got a Magimix 5100 coming up to 7 years ago, and it's still doing well today! I love how easy it is to use, and I regularly use the grater and mixer functions (at least once or twice a week.) My friend has troubles with her dough hook on hers, but since I rarely use mine I've not had a problem with this. I think if you are looking at something for making bread and cakes you should look into a Kenwood Mixer instead.

I have had my machine for a couple of years within the first year the central spindle sheared and damaged the blade it was sent for repair. The same problem has just happened but I live in Italy and can't find a way of repairing it. Also the bowl leaks over the top when blending soups or liquids and the lid is extremely tight fitting and difficult to open and close. I'm really disappointed I had a smaller model for years with no problems,I think the machine is unsuitable for constant use,and agree with a previous comment it needs to go back to the drawing board.

There's a common problem with the dough hook shredding. See here, for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgrIlLmoeBk
Otherwise, it's a good product.

The main problem I have is with the top to the plastic bowl. I have had 2 come apart which rendes the machien useless. You have to buy the bowl and the top together at a price of £52.99 plus carriage. I noticed that they have changed and improved the design on the 5200 model. Definitley wouldn't recommend this machine.

I was given this as a wedding gift over 6 years ago. It gets used all the time for chopping veg, mixing cakes, batters, general blending, grating and slicing, you name it. Never had a problem with it. Never broken a dough blade or any other part. The lid has recently started to split, but I've had it 6 years, its been regularly put through the dishwasher, so I reckon its been good value.

I bought my first Magimix in the 1970's & loved it, so I was expecting great things from the 5100 I bought to replace it. I wish I hadn't bothered. The safety mechanism between the lid and bowl jams so tightly it renders the processor unusable most of the time. According to the handbook it is for my protection and will "give" with time. It doesn't! The only way I can use the processor is by brute force. The bowls do not dish wash well, despite the manufacturers claims, they cloud, crack and splinter. I am now on my third bowl and second lid; to replace the complete set costs around £100. Another thing that annoys me is that each time Magimix bring out a new model you have to replace any extra discs you bought (julienne cutter, etc.) as the 5100 discs do not fit 5200 as the bowl assembly is different.
My advice? Forget it! If you want to bake bread/cakes, buy a good quality mixer (Kenwood Chef or Kitchenaid. If you want to slice & chop buy a good mandolin and a couple of good quality knives. If you want to make soup buy a blender but don't bother with the Magimix. It's a waste of time, space and money.

The Magimix 5100 dough blade is not strong enough second one is on its way out.
When blitzing soup it pours over the top. This machine is very badly designed and they should go back to the drawing board and not live on their rep!!! must be a nice little earner selling new dough blades

The Magimix 5100 is not up to the job of making dough. It shakes about and may break the (expensive) blade.
I score 0 for durability on that basis and poor value for money if you want to make bread

I bought the Magimix 5100 for slicing, grating and making cakes I had problems understanding the thing until a friend said go to the Magimix Spares website and when I did suddenly the mist cleared and Hey Presto I can slice and grate and make cakes all day long.

Glp123's Response to AndyBlokeSmith's Review
Written on: 09/06/2023
Ten years after this review was written, and my submission is to say I've suffered exactly the same. The dishwasher damaged the lid and bowl, and washing the blade in soapy water seems to have caused the plastic around the blade to disintegrate. And, yes, trying to make something like Hollandaise in the small bowl makes the larger bowl dirty. As the motor seems so good, I've contemplated buying (at great expense) replacement parts, but have gone for a Ninja model instead. It seems much better, although smaller. I have glued and taped the lid of the Magimix, and it will remain in my kitchen as a spare food processor.
