Low, The Great Destroyer - Over the last couple of albums, Low seem to have been slowly shedding their "slowcore" sound and starting to experment with feedback, noise and, well, a somewhat faster pace. While this initially came as a shock, it really does suit them and their sound. The Great Destroyer SOUNDS like a loud, fast Low album, if that's not actually an oxymoron. It's still soothing, it's still covers unusual topic matter (selling the farm and moving back to California....) and it still has the lush vocal harmonies of Alan and Mimi creating warmth and depth on the songs. It is, howeve,r a lot louder and a lot noisier than Low fans would expect, even moreso than previous offering, Trust. It took a couple of listens, but, like any Low album, The Great Destroyer is a beautiful album, although it has left me wondering why the monkey must die tonight. What's wrong with monkeys?
