“Avoid!”

Written on: 31/05/2013

My very elderly mum has contents cover with Saga. Neither of us had any idea that Saga are BROKERS. I have been attempting to make a claim on behalf of my mum and have spent literally hours trying to sort it out and to complain about the very poor service. I have been refused a complaints dept tel no. I am now awaiting a call from a 'manager' at some indeterminate time on a day not specified. Can I just add that Coop, who I have found underwrite this policy, have been very nice. It was... (read more)

“beware”

Written on: 04/05/2013 by eggybread48 (1 review written)

They sell home insurance to elderly people who can have, poor eyesight, hearing, forgetfulness, they sell you a policy, and include a continuous yearly payment attack on your bank account, that if you do not cancell, they will not stop. i think this is immoral. but it seems is not against the law. My own experience was that i accepted their quote, and made, i thought, a one off DEBIT CARD payment, but in the murky confusion of selling, they added that they could help themselves from my bank... “No for elderly people”

Written on: 02/04/2013 by rustd1 (1 review written)

Dont be fooled into thinking you are getting some sort of service from Saga. Insurance is outsourced in my parents case to CIS and AXA. Its just a normal policy. My 80 year old mother had to deal with the claim by phone something which greatly stressed her out. No one even explained to her that the damage entry was covered by buildings insurance so the whole thing had to be repeated. They had jewellery stolen and were only offered vouchers in the first instance until challenged. We've... (read more)

“Saga Home No Response”

Written on: 12/02/2013

Be aware that this company has a cynical response to Home Response enquiries. Do not admit naively that any 'Emergency' response is for something over 72 hours old. Also your policy apparently does not cover items such as toilets/showers etc if you have a alternative in your home. In other words if your shower stops working take bath! (read more)

“Nasty pressure selling to the elderly - and LIES”

Written on: 02/01/2013

Saga are supposed to be reputable. My elderly mother had contents insurance with. When she phoned up to add buildings she was hard-sold a grossly inflated price over the phone (with all the usual - 'this offer expires today' nonsense) - luckily she did not take it. When she called to cancel the original policy after their disgraceful behaviour the woman on the phone told her it was not possible to cancel insurance - and she couldn't take out a policy with anyone else until the Saga policy... couldn't make up their minds whether the policy would be renewed automatically or not- quoted me £65. Then said the policy was definitely cancelled. Called up to renew, was now quoted £135! No explanation, was told the price changes daily. Tried calling twice was promised a call back to explain. Surprise surprise no call! Total time wasters & their admin is appalling. “All insurance companies are a rip off”

Written on: 16/11/2012 by j0hnb0y

All insurance companies are a rip off. I only insure my cars at the cheapest rate every year. Because I have too by law. I drive with great care. Insurance cover is just an excuse, not to look after your things properly. Insurance companies really are parasites that you don't really need they just perpetuate fear and take your hard earned money. And once you relax they steal more and more. Just look after your kit and boost your security and you’ll be OK. Question. Who owns the insurance... (read more)

“If you don't go elsewhere, you'll regret it.”

Written on: 02/08/2012

We were with SAGA for nearly 20yrs, making the innocent (ignorant) assumption of honesty in their mission statement of looking out for over 50s. Due to health issues/lack of time & energy, we hadn't really kept up with direct debit charges or shopped around and now SERIOUSLY regret it. Two issues: 1) Bad claim experiences. Most recently we tried to claim on buildings and contents insurance and were told to schedule repairs as they would be covered. The underwriter then refused to uphold... (read more)

Terrykins's Comment

Written on: 15/09/2012

Well, we have been caught in the same net of Saga false kindness, our home insurance was from Saga four times higher than others, when I cancelled they were very quick to let us go from the books, strange indeed, we now pay 177. Instead of 740 Ish, how did they do it, why did they do it, can we ask for compensation from them, should they just apologise to us for the continued taking of excess monies knowing that for much less we get same cover.

Thanks for your response Terrykins,

Strangely, it's a relief to know we're not the only ones taken for a ride like this.

On a more helpful note, I thought I'd let you know that we've referred the matter to the Financial Ombudsman on the basis that even if we can't gain some compensation, they'll start investigating SAGA policies in such a way that will prevent others from suffering such treatment. I doubt we're in a minority.

If you want to see if they can help you (and you can ask them to seek compensation) then given them a call on their consumer helpline for advice 0300 123 9 123 or 0800 023 4567

Or if you want to go straight to complaining, you can download a form online (link below)

Good luck!

“far too expensive”

Written on: 21/06/2012

Saga have increased my mother's house insurance by an average of almost £100 a year for the past two years. Despite no claims being made their quote for a 3-bedroom house (building cover only) is almost £550. Other on line quotes obtained have been for less than a quarter of this sum. I feel they are just taking advantage of elderly people who dont have computers or the inclination to telephone around other insurance companies. (read more)

I wholeheartedly endorse these comments, just from asking for a quote for a one trip travel insurance policy for myself and wife (who suffers from Type 2 diabetes). The quote was £98 for a 26 day trip to Europe - 4 times more expensive than the second cheapest quote I received through confused.com.

In my humble opinion, Saga are rip-off merchants - avoid them at all costs.

“cost of renewal”

Written on: 23/06/2011 by derek12345

I have been with SAGA for three years and seeing premiums shoot up each year. This year I found I could get the same cover from Churcil for a 1/3 of the price. Seems to be a reverse loyalty pricing in place - stay loyal and get hammered. The worrying thing is that this is an insurance aimed at the over 50's only. With increasing age it is a fair bet that my mental capabilities will diminish and were I still with them I would end up automatically renewing each year without really looking at... (read more)

Old Bald Eagle's Response to mfkemp's Review

Written on: 02/03/2011

I found this review somewhat helpful because...
This claim should have been considered by SAGA under storm damage peril. To deal with it as accidental damage is incorrect.
Unless specifically excluded within the policy wording, damage caused by excessive amounts of snow is storm damage; the legal authority for this is Glasgow Central Training Ltd v Lombard Continental Insurance.
I think mfkemp should pursue this with SAGA!

As per others comments SAGA Premiums have risen excessively this year both in Home and Vehicle Insurance. Whilst the representative I spoke with to discuss renewal of the vehicle was pleasant and tried to help and seek ways to reduce the final cost the Home Insurance Rep was slightly aggressive and appeared not interested in keeping the business. Having recently claimed following a theft from a utility area of two electric bikes Saga passed on the claim to Halfords for resolution, who then returned this to Saga as they do not sell such bikes for cash resolution, Saga now state this theft is not covered by the policy. This is despite this question specifically being asked when taking out the policy and being told everything in the utility and shed were covered. I am very aggrieved and will be looking elsewhere for cover. Be very... (read more)

I would strongly advise against home insurance with Saga. After a storm last week and flooding in our home Saga instructed Asprea to deal with our claim. They sent two workmen 2 days later to do emergency repairs to make the roof watertight. The workmen were here 5 minutes and advised it wasn't and insurance 'job' and left us 'high and WET' and did not attempt any repair. 7 days and many downpours later we are still mopping and trying desperately to get repair done ourselves. They are very considerate when you need to make a claim and have been a god send for us on at least 2 occasions. (read more)

Saga seem to specialise in renewal quotes averaging a 50% increase, be it for home or motor insurance.
My renewal quote was for 413. I phoned, asked for same cover at same address and it went down to 310 just lie that as Tommy Cooper used to say. Two year earlier I had same experience with motor insurance. (read more)

The 'cheap' Saga Home Insurance quote is so basic that it's hardly worth having. To get what you want, they then quote rates that can be obtained from many other companies.
I lasted 12 months before I moved on to a more sensible company.
Worst of all is their continual junk mail once they have your name - it continues relentlessly for years and years. (read more)
