“Poor value for money”

Written on: 27/07/2014 by Mozartimiss (4 reviews written)

Never made a claim with them so can't comment on their customer service or the claims process. However my insurance has risen steeply with each quote over seven years and fed up with paying through the nose, enlisted my daughter to research my options online. I was shocked but delighted at how competitive the quotes were in comparison and have now reduced my bill by £150 with a well established insurer and got extra cover and a 24 hour emergency line. Am very happy I looked around especially… Read Full Review

“Broken promises!”

Written on: 19/07/2014 by IzabellaManning452 (1 review written)

I took out house insurance with Saga, including boiler service for my gas central heating boiler. It has taken over 2.5 yrs to actually get a service. (Well, it hasn't actually happened yet, not until August) So I have paid for three services but still waiting for the first. I only managed to get a number to call by putting my concerns on their facebook page, which seems to have disappeared. It seemed to be run by someone, who must have been on duty 24/7, as all the replies came from him. Have… Read Full Review

“Charging more to treat us like idiots”

Written on: 21/05/2014 by JSLeitch (2 reviews written)

No discount for no claims - and we haven't made a home insurance claim in 30 years. Latest renewal quote was so preposterous we just had to look elsewhere. Got quotes starting at one-quarter of what Saga were threatening to charge. They make a lovely profit out of pensioners like us presumably on the assumption that the over-payment at least allows us to speak a human being when we need to phone them. We may be pensioners, but we still have lots of humans we can talk with without being charged… Read Full Review

“APATHETIC!! AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE”

Written on: 20/04/2014 by 325Hopper (1 review written)

We had a water leak in the bathroom (a month ago)from a cistern in a built in vanity unit. The water had been leaking for some time and travelled under the ply sub-floor and heavy vinyl. We had Saga emergency home cover(apparently AA run the service) who after 2 attempts had still been unable to fix the leak (despite ourselves being told they had!) Following their 2nd visit they advised we contact Saga claims as they expected that our floorboards were saturated. Since that time we have… Read Full Review

“Home Emergency failure”

Written on: 12/04/2014 by xzCorcoran340 (1 review written)

My PVC door lock collapsed whilst I was out waking my aged dog.A neighbour phoned the nearby locksmith - who got me back in the house. I phoned Saga immediately but they would not accept this claim as I should have spoken to them first. How can you when you don't have a mobile with you, don't know their contact details and can't get in your house… Read Full Review

“Saga? No Way! ”

Written on: 20/01/2014 by davealpha (1 review written)

Saga use a string of companies to underwrite and manage their insurance claims. Beware these companies don't seem to be able to communicate with each other. I made a claim for a roof leak after a terrific storm in December 2013 and was referred to Atramas, their underwriters, then AICL who manage the claims for Atramas then their sub contractor Eastwell, then Davies who contract to Eastwell then to the loss adjustor Hutchinson who also happened to be a builders firm. Hutchinson sent out two… Read Full Review

Chestnutcottage's Response to davealpha's Review

I know exactly what you mean! I always thought SAGA was a company you could count on for reliability and integrity but how wrong can you be! Our sitting room ceiling collapsed on Christmas Eve. It took SAGA's partner in the insurance five weeks to come out and inspect (the time of gales and hundred mph winds. He (the loss adjuster) said the roof damage that caused the flood was "wear and tear" and that was our problem not theirs. They would consider a claim for re-decoration however. Nine weeks on we still have a huge hole in our ceiling though the roofer we found and paid for did stop the internal water feature. Our insulation is gone in the worst winter on record. SAGA's partner keeps giving us deadlines to give us a decision on our claim and they keep coming and going response. I will never trust SAGA again or do any business with them

“Terrible value for pensioners - almost predatory.”

Written on: 15/01/2014

I switched my octogenarian parents from SAGA car insurance and SAGA home insurance and saved them over £500pa and got BETTER cover. SAGA are NOT the pensioners friend - they take advantage of them and their lack of internet savvy. Absolutely disgusted and have been in touch with the media - SAGA MUST be outed… Read Full Review

“What a Saga”

Written on: 05/01/2014

Like many senior citizens I thought by choosing Saga ,who supposedly cater for older customers, that insuring our home we would be making a sound choice. How wrong can you be. After experiencing a loss of roof slates following very high winds which caused structural damage throughout the area I proceeded to claim for damage caused and prompt replacement to keep the rain from coming in. Following my call to report the damage Saga forwarded my damage report to their loss adjusters and an… Read Full Review

“Still waiting ...”

Written on: 04/11/2013

We have building and contents insurance with (we thought) Saga thus tailored to the needs of older people. Not so. Following last week's storm we had water through the roof. We phoned Saga on Monday. Now it is Monday again - a week later. Still no-one has come to see our roof. The first call had not been logged at Saga when I called back last week. Then I was referred to LAS who did call and said would call back. They did not call back. More rain through the roof last night and I am… Read Full Review

“Not loking after the elderly”

Written on: 27/08/2013 by Duke1331 (1 review written)

I am writing this on behalf of an elderly 87 year old friend. Last year she received her renewal notice for contents insurance from SAGA. The price had risen by around 40%. She contacted customer services and questioned the increase to be told 'that somebody had to pay for the floods' and 'there was no movement on price'. She ended the call stating that she was unsure about renewing and would think about it. She thought this was sufficient for the policy not to be renewed without further… Read Full Review

“Disappointed as others clearly are.”

Written on: 16/07/2013

My father in law was burgled with a resulting broken door and window. I sorted out securing them both using a local locksmith. Saga were phoned and told what had happened and that the place was secure. They promised to send someone out to measure up for replacement . Two days later someone arrived "to make the place secure". They are on to a loser here. If they thought the place was not secure why wait three days to come out?, if not why send the wrong person? Either way it is hardly right for… Read Full Review

“Avoid!”

Written on: 31/05/2013

My very elderly mum has contents cover with Saga. Neither of us had any idea that Saga are BROKERS. I have been attempting to make a claim on behalf of my mum and have spent literally hours trying to sort it out and to complain about the very poor service. I have been refused a complaints dept tel no. I am now awaiting a call from a 'manager' at some indeterminate time on a day not specified. Can I just add that Coop, who I have found underwrite this policy, have been very nice. It was… Read Full Review

“beware”

Written on: 04/05/2013 by eggybread48 (1 review written)

They sell home insurance to elderly people who can have, poor eyesight, hearing, forgetfulness, they sell you a policy, and include a continuous yearly payment attack on your bank account, that if you do not cancell, they will not stop. i think this is immoral. but it seems is not against the law. My own experience was that i accepted their quote, and made, i thought, a one off DEBIT CARD payment, but in the murky confusion of selling, they added that they could help themselves from my bank… Read Full Review

“No for elderly people”

Written on: 02/04/2013 by rustd1 (1 review written)

Dont be fooled into thinking you are getting some sort of service from Saga. Insurance is outsourced in my parents case to CIS and AXA. Its just a normal policy. My 80 year old mother had to deal with the claim by phone something which greatly stressed her out. No one even explained to her that the damage entry was covered by buildings insurance so the whole thing had to be repeated. They had jewellery stolen and were only offered vouchers in the first instance until challenged. We've settled… Read Full Review

“Saga Home No Response”

Written on: 12/02/2013

Be aware that this company has a cynical response to Home Response enquiries. Do not admit naively that any 'Emergency' response is for something over 72 hours old. Also your policy apparently does not cover items such as toilets/showers etc if you have a alternative in your home. In other words if your shower stops working take bath!… Read Full Review

“Nasty pressure selling to the elderly - and LIES”

Written on: 02/01/2013

Saga are supposed to be reputable. My elderly mother had contents insurance with. When she phoned up to add buildings she was hard-sold a grossly inflated price over the phone (with all the usual - 'this offer expires today' nonsense) - luckily she did not take it. When she called to cancel the original policy after their disgraceful behaviour the woman on the phone told her it was not possible to cancel insurance - and she couldn't take out a policy with anyone else until the Saga policy… Read Full Review

“price jumped £70 in two weeks- avoid”

Written on: 18/12/2012

couldn't make up their minds whether the policy would be renewed automatically or not- quoted me £65. Then said the policy was definitely cancelled. Called up to renew, was now quoted £135! No explanation, was told the price changes daily. Tried calling twice was promised a call back to explain. Surprise surprise no call! Total time wasters & their admin is appalling. They don't seem to know what they're doing. Give them a miss… Read Full Review

“All insurance companies are a rip off”

Written on: 16/11/2012 by j0hnb0y (1 review written)

All insurance companies are a rip off. I only insure my cars at the cheapest rate every year. Because I have too by law. I drive with great care. Insurance cover is just an excuse, not to look after your things properly. Insurance companies really are parasites that you don't really need they just perpetuate fear and take your hard earned money. And once you relax they steal more and more. Just look after your kit and boost your security and you’ll be OK. Question. Who owns the insurance… Read Full Review

Brummagemflash's Response to j0hnb0y's Review

Written on: 20/12/2013

I agree wholeheartedly: third-party insurance is terrible. There is no requirement for the insurers to provide a reasonable deal; so they work together to rip us all off, to pay out on bogus claims.
My wife's insurance company SAGA wasted a stack of money paying for the unnecessary collection of her freshly-MoT-tested car by transporter: refusing our offer to drive it to them at an appointed time.
I had needed to get it tested before they were ready to inspect the damage: caused by someone rushing out of a parked position and scraping along its side.
They took it away and kept it at an approved garage for three weeks, for someone to inspect it: a ten minute job of evaluating the repair cost versus the vehicle value!
They insisted we had an almost-new Vauxhall Insignia hire car for that time: a death trap with uncomfortably hard suspension: it is impossible to see behind when pulling out, without opening driver's door!
My wife and I were both very glad to get our Escort-sized Hyundai estate back:
it may not be so protective for us, but it is not so deadly for other road users!
There was only cosmetic damage on wife's old car; but SAGA 'wrote it off' and put a VIC marker on the DVLA database as a Category C repairable vehicle. We got it back from the garage with added-extra minor damage; but we are still using it daily, without repairing any of the cosmetic damage.
It still has the VIC marker which, as long as we keep the car, only stops the DVLA tax reminders! So, we won't pay the £80 fee to check the identity of the vehicle: as this has never been in question: it was MoT tested (including an identity check) between the dates of damage and the VIC marker being applied!
What an inconvenient waste of time and money!
And guess who pays for that: the premium-payers!

“If you don't go elsewhere, you'll regret it.”

Written on: 02/08/2012

We were with SAGA for nearly 20yrs, making the innocent (ignorant) assumption of honesty in their mission statement of looking out for over 50s. Due to health issues/lack of time & energy, we hadn't really kept up with direct debit charges or shopped around and now SERIOUSLY regret it. Two issues: 1) Bad claim experiences. Most recently we tried to claim on buildings and contents insurance and were told to schedule repairs as they would be covered. The underwriter then refused to uphold claim… Read Full Review

Terrykins's Comment

Written on: 15/09/2012

Well, we have been caught in the same net of Saga false kindness, our home insurance was from Saga four times higher than others, when I cancelled they were very quick to let us go from the books, strange indeed, we now pay 177. Instead of 740 Ish, how did they do it, why did they do it, can we ask for compensation from them, should they just apologise to us for the continued taking of excess monies knowing that for much less we get same cover.

Thanks for your response Terrykins,

Strangely, it's a relief to know we're not the only ones taken for a ride like this.

On a more helpful note, I thought I'd let you know that we've referred the matter to the Financial Ombudsman on the basis that even if we can't gain some compensation, they'll start investigating SAGA policies in such a way that will prevent others from suffering such treatment. I doubt we're in a minority.

If you want to see if they can help you (and you can ask them to seek compensation) then given them a call on their consumer helpline for advice 0300 123 9 123 or 0800 023 4567

Or if you want to go straight to complaining, you can download a form online (link below)

http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/consumer/complaints.htm#3

Good luck!
