“Doesn't Benefit Artists”

Written on: 06/05/2013

Got the free trial and spent all of the money. I'm good. It worked fine. BUT, as an aspiring artist/music-lover I can most certainly tell that these tracks are not really that official. The quality of the music is slightly off, it's not as rich as buying the album or buying it on iTUnes. I feel almost positive that the tracks on the site are not official or approved by the company. Overall, I would say get the trial, spend the money in a week, and cancel the membership ASAP. If you're... (read more)

“A Great Source for Music”

Written on: 22/04/2013

I have been an Emusic user for about 8 years, and I love it! I solely credit Emusic for expanding my musical horizons. This service is not for people who want to listen to Ryan Seacrest's top 40 hits. You won't find Rihanna, Metallica, or Taylor Swift in their collection. However, they have lots of great stuff from all over the world. Finally, I do not understand why subscribers are complaining about their price hikes. My plan's price has never gone up. Only new subscribers are affected... (read more)

“Poor, poor, poor”

Written on: 25/03/2013

Their selection of music isn't great - mostly obscure stuff you've never heard of. I signed up to a two week free trial, but forgot to cancel it before I paid my first month's subscription. This didn't bother me so much because I figured the free credit would roll over and I could just use it later. It didn't. I lost all the free credit and then found it pretty difficult to spend the £9.99 subscription credit. There was little music I actually recognised and the website is not very... (read more)

“Good Value and Service”

Written on: 25/03/2013

Everybody is talking about the scam that eMusic is.... I have to disagree. Everything is clearly stated during the registration process, that if you don't cancel before your free trial ends you WILL be charged OR if you exceed your free trial credits you will be charged. It gives you an option of what plan you want to choose... Everything is also started in the Terms of Service and you can clearly see ALL of the information in your "Account" like - when you were billed, when you will be... (read more)

“Absolutely terrible choice of music & rubbish website”

Written on: 15/01/2013

Due to ignorance on my behalf, forgot to cancel the free trial after 14 days, so ended up being £27.99 worse off for it (yes, they stick you on the MOST expensive plan once the trial ends. It's up to you to change it yourself!!). Though I may as well try and use the money, only to find the website was terrible to use, and the selection of music was awful. Loads of cover tracks by obscure artists, or compilation albums thrown together with titles that I should think no-ones ever heard of!... (read more)

“disappointing and depressing”

Written on: 22/11/2012 by Mcdowellray

I was a member of emusic for several years, before they started adding back catalogs from major record producers. They *were* a great source of music back then. Examples would include Taylor Swift before she got famous, Paul Thorne, Brett Dennon, Slobberbone, Greg Brown, Peter Mulvey, Ellis Paul....the list *was* very lengthy. Then when they switched all of a sudden prices went up, which might not have been so bad, but they added nothing to those of us outside the US. After almost two years... (read more)

I signed up with emusic.com for trial music and audiobook downloads. I could never download MP3 files as they advertised, only invalid EMX files. Each time I click on a selection, it automatically charged my account, even before selecting to download where you can confirm it is not the right file format.By then it is too late. It's a scam! Their music selection is bad. They charge you without notice, no billing info is sent to make sure you are unaware. The balance doesn't roll over so you can't use what you've been charged. Here is my story: I urgently needed winzip and to download it for free I made a FREE sign-up with emusic to get winzip. “This website is a scam - BEWARE!”

Written on: 26/04/2012

I entirely agree with a previous reviewer who said that this website is engaged in theft, plain and simple. There are many different problems with this eMusic including the fact that you cannot carry over your membership fees from one month to the next. This company has undergone so many changes it's only the name that now resembles the service I signed up for some years ago. Changes always meant tracks getting more and more expensive, and their great redownload option became impossible, replacing it with a repurchase option - all under the guise of offering more of main stream labels. “Theft, plain and simple. Is this scam even LEGAL?”

Written on: 16/04/2012

Emusic has, hidden in their user agreement, a policy that unless you turn over your payment info to allow them to continually bill you, they can revoke your existing music credits. That means that your balance--which you PAID for--simply goes away, and they hold it hostage until you let them bill you again. If you don't want to, you forfeit your own credit. Nevermind that you ought to own this credit--you paid for it in real dollars, after all--Emusic has written their TOS to permit them to... (read more)

They also got hold of my bank details in January 2012 after two suspicious small amount deductions of under £5. Phoned them twice. They say they've blocked my card details and refunded the last 2 transactions. Am waiting as i only did this today. They also said the bank had been in contact aswell and they told them it wasn't fraud. Despite the fact i've now had to cancel 2 cards as the one they originally took it out on expired just before i got the 1st card i had to cancel. The bank says i have no direct debit or standing order and don't know how they are still taking money out of my account. Don't know how they got my card details as i haven't had a computer in the last 2 years. And i'm pretty sure the details for Amazon were from a completely different card. If they used this card to access new ones they are breaking the law.

“A download music site for the adventurous!”

Written on: 22/11/2011 by yorkielass4skye (1 review written)

I was originally introduced to e-music by cashing in Kelloggs Cornflakes vouchers! What with the initial 25 tunes free and then 100 free tracks when I signed up to 1 year with them, it worked out I paid 23p per track, for a total of 413 tracks. I must admit I'm not fond of the new pricing structure they introduced mid-way through 2010 (42p per track, rather than simply offering 24 unpriced tracks for £9.99), where £9.99 doesn't strictly speaking get that 24th track each month, but it... The fact you cannot actually browse for music to see what they are selling until you actually sign up is obviously a bad omen, and from what I see of the other reviews my rationale is justified.

Written on: 01/03/2011

The main differentiator for eMusic compared to iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody and all the other large online music stores is that eMusic principally catalogues smaller and/or independent labels. It probably doesn't match the sheer volume/quantity of music available in iTunes - hence 4 stars for quantity. But then again, it doesn't focus on so much of the mainstream junk that's so readily available. Instead, eMusic is positioned specifically for people who are willing to put in a little effort to... Jovecana's Comment

Written on: 02/03/2011

I found this review not helpful because it is not much more than an exaggeration of the author's own inability comprehend the terms of service. In fact, the author makes it seem like eMusic is deceitful just for displaying a terms of service, when in fact, usually the opposite is true; those that wish to deceive/ scam either make their TOS very complicated to the point of being illegible, or else they do not display a TOS at all.

eMusic TOS is neither confusing or hidden. If the author didn't understand it, it's a failure on his/her own part - not eMusic.

In short the review is useless because it's just a display of the author's ignorance, while it says nothing at all about the eMusic service itself.
