Nationwide are sly and devious - I agree with the previous comments in that they have in effect stolen money from my children and their accounts. When I checked the interest rates I was totally shocked and withdrew/closed the accounts there and then. I was told that I should regularly ask what the interest rate was and it was not up to them to tell me. What a misnamed product "Smart to Save" - not with Nationwide though.
However, why did they try to sell me home insurance, mortgages etc...

Nationwide does not alert of rate drops. Have robbed my children of interest - wicked. I have complained first step. Now will complain to their Head Office - will wait 65 days and then complain to Financial Ombudsman. (read more)

Shockingly bad service, queues out of the door most days because not enough tills to cope with customers. No privacy on front desk despite them dealing with sensitive information - everyone overhears your problems/complaints and personal information. Have never felt like the problems were being taken seriously when reported anyway.
We have 2 children's accounts with them - despite filling in the forms 3 times, in branch each time (so wasn't lost in the post) - they still haven't added me to...

I OPENED AN 'SMART TO SAVE ACCOUNT' FOR MY CHILDREN - AS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF TEACHING THEM HOW TO SAVE - NATIONWIDE ARE NOW GIVING A MERE 0.75 WHEN ITS POSSIBLE TO GET ABT 3.00 ELSEWHERE - I FEEL THAT THEY HAVE ROBBED THE CHILDRENS INVESTMENT - IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN CALLED THE 'NOT TO SMART TO SAVE' account instead of the 'Smart to Save Account' - thought we were suposed to be educationing parents and children to save (read more)

Quick get your money out of the Nationwide - interest rates on every account starts with 0.! The childrens saver in particular which my son has held for 10 years has dropped from 5% to 0.75.. you dont have to look far for a much better rate. Very sneaky of the Nationwide - also take note Dunfermline BS customers! (read more)

Both my children have held Nationwide kids accounts since they were born....I have always been happy with the service although I do agree with the first reviewer that if you go into the branch at a busy time you must be prepared to queue! My local branch only has 2 desks so if you get a difficult customer then you can be half an hour or more waiting - not good with 2 small children! The staff are friendly and efficient though and I have no hesitation in recommending the Nationwide. (read more)

Nationwide do generally have a reasonable rate of interest on their Smart Children's Saving Account, although with a bit of shopping around these can be bettered.
But don't go into a Nationwide branch if you haven't got much time. For the second week running our city branch has had queues out of the door. I waited 25 minutes in the queue, and during that time they closed 1 of the 3 cashier windows - even though they still had queues out of the door. When we questioned why we were told...

Despite their claim on television to offer everyone the same good rate on their savings account; the history is different. We have had accounts in the past in our son's name only, to find that they had been "parked" giving a 0.5% interest rate. Nationwide do not tell you when this happens, and when you complain you get know where. (read more)

Phone Nationwide before if you are not a Nationwide user, to check what identity you need to open a Smart Children's Saving Account. I was very happy with Nationwide, and I was only in there for about 10 minutes. (read more)
