Well, Alliance and Leicester on paper offer one of the best current accounts going. Huge interest when you're in credit, an interest-free (albeit temporary) overdraft... but pick up the phone for Telephone Banking and you'll see why I score them a "*" for customer service and will be leaving them very soon.

The call-centre staff are some of the least friendly, least helpful and least capable staff I've ever had the displeasure of speaking to. An unfortunate collection of events meant I went slightly over my overdraft limit temporarily, and although it was my first offence and I am now back in credit by some margin they saw fit to charge me £85 - overdraft fee (£5 per day!!!) for 7 days and two £25 direct debit 'review fees', although I've confirmed over the phone that these 'review fees' are in fact completely automatic.

I'm in the process of claiming these charges back and will be changing accounts as soon as humanly possible. It really is a case of 'computer says no' when speaking to their operatives - they seem to wield no authority or power, and no willingness to adapt to personal sitations.

Alliance & Leicester Telephone Banking is really annoying not to get put through to a human straight away. You have to input account details on key pad and then it takes time to connect, it does not help that it is ALWAYS busy during the day.

Alliance & Leicester seem to go out of their way to discourage you to speak to their customer support staff. If anything falls remotely out of the pre-set options then you can spend many frustrating phone calls pressing buttons and going round in circles.

I've banked with Alliance & Leicester for 1 year, and I find their service very adequate when you want to know your balance, but that's where it ends. They are slow at phoning Post Offices for money withdrawals, and I've been let down many times. They are very quick to pass the buck on banking problems, and it is very frustrating on the phones, when explaining things 10 times to 10 different people. The staff lack training, and they always agree with you and are positive, but you'll find that tr ...
