We purchased post office travel insurance online in April to cover our May holiday to Portugal. There was a problem with the website and they said they would have to post us the documents. A few days later we received them and flew off on holiday a day or so later. There was no notification that claims due to the ash cloud would be declined. Our flight home was cancelled due to the ash and we were initially told on the phone that we would be covered for travel delay. We got home and put the claim in with Fortis the company dealing with the claim for post office. They told us our claim would pay out £400 and we needed to send in all the documents required and a form. We sent all the info and 2 weeks later I phoned to see when we would get the payment. I was told the payment was sent to the supervisor for authorisation and the cheque would follow a few days later. I got a call the next day saying the claim was declined because it was a known event. I am so angry at the expense of sending all the documents and phone calls and being missold the policy and being given misleading advice over the phone both by fortis and Post office I am in the process of referring my complaint to the financial ombudsman service. I believe I have a valid claim as post office have subsequently notified customers that the ash was a known event on their website but at the time I took the policy this was not declared on their site as a known event. On the day that I took the insurance flights were flying out as normal. I would not recommend Post Office insurance to anyone as they are not treating customers fairly as outlined by the FSA.

I used to work in Insurance and took my CII exams, so without blowing my own trumpet I know a thing or two about insurance. One of the golden rules of insurance is get everything in writing! Now the Post Office travel insurance is underwritten by Fotis insurance. This summer I and my family are visiting Thailand and we considered buying Post Office travel insurance since they won the UK's best travel insurance award for 2009. However there is a problem. A couple of months after the riots in Thai ...

My mother-in-Law was taken seriously ill during our 3rd day in Florida. Rang the help line. they requested her details, hospital, doctor etc and said they would ring us back. 10 mins later rang with a couple of flights we could get back. Chose which one we wanted. Unfortunately couldn't get to our original airport but provided us with a taxi from Manchester to Sunderland. (he was more than happy to drop us at the hospital, didn't need to go home first) She died before our return. we then h ...

My wife was taken ill on holiday in Majorca and required emergency surgery. Everything was arranged and cover confirmed inside 90 minutes.

Post Office Travel Insurance kept me informed of developments on a daily basis, arranged a hotel for me when stay overran end of holiday and arranged flights - with assistance on arrival - to get us back to the UK.

At end of treatment I simply paid the excess to the hospital and we were out of there. Brilliant service.

I have taken out 2 annual multi-trip policies so far and have just had to claim for a missed flight. However, when I actually claimed I soon find the ground lies rather different to when you read the pleasant blurb about the policy benefits - " £0 excess on missed flights" etcThe reason I missed the flight are not accepted by the insurers - it has to be one of THEIR reasons, and you are required to have aimed to be at the airport 2 hours before the flight. It has to be motorised transpor ...

I got Post Office Travel Insurance for a recent holiday to Spain with some friends. I've never been into the whole holiday insurance thing - generally I've stuck with the notion that "it can't possibly happen to me".That said, the last thing I wanted was to be stuck in Spain with illness/injury etc. Plus my policy covered me for lost luggage, which was good bearing in mind the fiasco with BA and their luggage disaster (which was in full swing at the time).Suffice it to say, I didn't need the ins ...

Fair do's to all travel insurance it is only useful for medical and emergency services - if you want to claim for personal belongings check your home insurance covers you - its a better deal. Since using the Post Office travel Insurance for the first time 4 year ago, my husband and I use it every year. I ended up in hospital in France for 2 week and the service couldn't have been better. They dealt with everything, even covered my husbands costs of travelling back to UK with my daughter then hi ...

Post Office Travel Insurance refused to pay although I have a doctors note ( £15) they insist on two notes from Ryanair ( £15 each) for each flight I haven't flown on. How could I fly, I have a doctors note, clearly stating I was unable to travel. A cancellation note from the car hire company although I didn't cancel this as I only knew the day of the holiday I wouldn't be able to use it. This is the same for the house I rented. They said when I initially phoned and said I would b ...

I got my Post Office travel insurance on the day of departure of my trip. I just popped to the post office before setting off. Once I paid, I was covered. Simple as that.

However, one cannot rate an insurance company without making a claim, which I did. The claim process is fairly straight forward. I called up the helpline number, and a few days later, the claim form arrived.

After I had sent off the claim form with all requested documents, I got my cheque of £550 within 2 weeks. The ...

You would expect a camcorder to be covered for theft whilst you are on holiday wouldn't you? If you leave them in a locked car, and even out of sight they are not covered with the Post Office Travel Insurance. There is in fact no cover under the policy for valuables unless they are carried by you, or locked in the hotel room safe. Valuables are amongst some of the personal items that you might take with you on holiday, such as a Camera, camcorder, watch, binoculars, and radio etc. So, once you r ...

I was initially very pleased with the Post Office travel insurance, underwritten by Fortis, when I first purchased it for a trip to Germany and Poland this past summer. The staff at the Post Office were extremely friendly, and recommended the policy highly as 'covering everything.'The telephone staff were also very warm on initial inquiries. Of course, when the actual crunch came and I had to claim for something, in my case, shipping costs for a repaired camera (the repair itself was free from ...

Whenever I head abroad, my travel insurance is taken care of by Her Majesty and co at the Post Office. I do this as it is quick and easy and covers all the bases you need from a decent holiday insurance provider. They are also very cheap to use, but if you holiday more than once a year, then there are other companies who may serve you better with a long term insurance plan.
