Not worth any stars. Mortgage application (November 13) has taken months after constant requests for info and taking the payment for the process. Turned around and declined as they just Jan14 changed their criteria to do with the rent of our old place just covering covering the let to buy mortgage payments even though our affordability on their application for the new house was easily affordable. Used mortgage broker who was a joke from the start however due to a default on credit file 4yrs ago, was told Skipton were the best option. Initial calls made to confirm that was not going to be a problem. Submitted application paid fees, they asked for every bit of information which was given. Eventually after a month, got to underwriter stage after putting in offer for house. More information asked for by Skipton which i gave. Turned round after an hour and application declined! In trying to re-mortgage our flat on a buy-to-let, this lender asked for every piece of information they could possibly think of, took months processing it, then sent a valuer round who proceeded to under-value the property by £10K meaning the equity that could be taken out of the property was less then we needed. They asked for comparables of other properties sold at the higher price and when we sent through two, they still didn't increase the value. We've waited 10 weeks and now have to go… Read Full Review

I was appalled at how long it took to set up my account. I ended up sending an email to close my account. I received a phone call just to confirm that I wanted my account closed. Good customer service would have apologised before anything else. But no, not even a sorry. Disgusted… Read Full Review

Approximately 6 years ago I took out 2 competitively priced 5 year fixed mortgages with this company at 5.15% fixed. The rate was due to fall to 2.99% above Bank Of England Base Rate so rate payable of 3.49%(at todays rate). Over the next 4 years interest rates fell which meant that the Skipton were receiving a very healthy return on their investment. A year or so before the fixed rate was due to finish they changed the agreement due to extreme market conditions so the rate payable at the end… Read Full Review

My husband and I visited your Otley Branch on Saturday morning and were extremely impressed with the help and advice we received from the Manager. She tidied up all our finances and opened new & more advatageous accounts for us, which she explained in an extemely helpful way. The whole visit was a pleasure and she is a great asset to your Branch - she even stayed with us 10 minutes after closing - thanks again for such very helpful and friendly service. Applied for a skipton mortgage through a broker. She recomended skipton as they are more leanient if ypur credit score is not 100 percent squeaky clean (my partner had a default on his experian credit report from a previous address which e was unaware of until credit check, which we since paid but annoyingly still shows on report) got the decision in principle fine. Them did some research on here and read the reviews, thought we have no chance as my partner is also a sub contractor so very… Read Full Review

Please if you have a relative with a will with Skipton please pay for them to change their will to a proper solicitor they are nothing but lying scum bags who coerced my mother into making another will (which was the same as the previous one) stating that they could look after me better after her death, they have now charged me £240 to get the original which then took 3 weeks for me to obtain, they cannot understand the idea of rounding up or down when it comes to percentages. I telephoned Skipton to see if I could extend my interest only buy to let mortgage which runs out in three and a half year by another 5 years so that I could make sure I could pay it off. I was sent numerous forms to fill in, which I did. i returned them but did not hear anything from them for around three weeks. When I phoned to find out what was happening on my application I was told that they had refused the extention of 5 years as they no longer supplied buy to let mortgages. They told… Read Full Review

Stay away from this Building Society is the best advice anyone can offer. The accounts they offer are second rate, to go alongside their second rate service. Of the branches I have been in, I have been disgusted with the service offered, and have even seen staff being bullied and sworn at. Having already raised a complaint with SBS, I noticed that nothing had been done. Accounts wise, their KickOut Bond, and Suer Tracker Bonds, are ridiculous, - invest for 6 years, and make nothing. STAY AWAY… Read Full Review

Investors should stay away from Skipton Building Society. They took 44 days to make an ISA transfer for me. When ased why it took so long and where my lost interest has gone they have no answer. The customer services are not helpful. They are not able to answer any questions. To get you off the phone they will offer a call back but no one will ever call you back.
I have nothing positive to say.
Save yourself a lot of hassle and stress, avoid Skipton Building Society… Read Full Review

I opened an ISA on 17 March 2011 to transfer ISAs from 2 other banks. The money has still not been credited to my account by 28 April. The excuse each time I call is "We're really busy". Not good enough.
Interest will be credited back to the original date but I do not see why it takes over 6 weeks to open account and credit the money. Skipton BS have had the funds and correct paperwork for over 1 month. Slow, poor service and best avoided… Read Full Review

I would not recommend them to anyone. I have had a bad experience with them, I already have a mortgage with them at the moment and i have just finished the end of the 3 year fixed contract and i am trying to get new mortgage with them in my sole name as my ex-partner name is on the property. Its taking them months to get back to me, after i have been chasing this every week.
Unfortunately because my house value has drop since when i brought this in 2007, than will not allow me to have… Read Full Review

It my belief that the management of this society are criminals in the context that they have broke their word on a promise to keep their standard variable rate no higher than 3% above base rates, they have increased it now to 4.95%.
They now have one of the highest standard variable rate mortgage on the market and are profiteering at the expense of its customers.
I have complained about this but their is has been dismissive and rude.
Keep away from the society they are not to be trusted and… Read Full Review

Had a fixed rate mortgage that they decided to increase the amount we pay within the fixed rate period which would have cost us over £1000 in extra interest in that term alone. Then told us if we don't like it then go to the FSA and the ombudsman.

The Skipton Building Society is very second rate with poor customer access to information the callback service does not work they did not return my call.
They will open an account instantly to take your money but if you want to close an account and take your money out you will find every obstacle put in your way to delay the removal of your money,I have found the head office staff to be very obstructive and unhelpful.
my advice would be give them a wide berth if you want access to your money… Read Full Review
