“Absolute shower”

Would not approve my lawyer to the lender panel with no explanation. Terrible service so changed lender. How can a lender be so irresponsible and out of touch. Reviews say it all really. Shockingly bad and making a fortune out of any mug that choses to use them. Avoid

“Amateurs”

written by TrevinLyons448 on 02/11/2016

The whole set-up with Newcastle Building Society is amateurish and behind the times. I have experienced extremely poor customer service in branch and when dealing with a mortgage application. I also suspect that their advertised mortgage rates are misleading. There are other financial institutions offering a much more professional service so I'd go just about anywhere else to be honest. On the other hand, if you want your time wasted, if you want frustration and incompetence, then Newcastle Building Society will be right up your street.

“The reviews are correct ”

Complete time wasters. Seem to do things backwards to the other lenders. Took a product fee of £250 at the start and then Took a £300 valuation fee off me before even looking at my application a few days later. Could never get any straight answers from them. Over two weeks in was told it could take up to 8 weeks. Had to pull out for fear of loosing the new house. Went with Natwest who had us turned around within 5 days!! Avoid the Newcastle at all costs complete time wasters!!

“Terrible Timewasters for Mortgage”

★☆☆☆☆

written by zuHudson164 on 22/01/2016

They gave the lowest rate, which drew us into applying for a mortgage through these guy. But How bad are they! absolute dodgy. Beware! They longed out the whole process, over 12 weeks they just kept asking for more and more papers, it was silly. we paid their surveyor and some other fees, finally they declined the offer without reason! absolute rubbish. These guys WILL LET YOU DOWN they LONG out the process, take fees for their surveyors and then refuse you! i moved to a different city temporarily (i was expecting the usual 6-8 weeks), and then these guys dragged the whole process on for over 3 months, and now i am going with a better mortgage provider. it almost ruined the whole deal for the house and made it look bad on my end to the seller :( gosh why didn't i read these reviews first!

“Savings easy”

★★★★☆

written by jeeping on 27/11/2015

In 2013 I set up an online ISA account with a fixed rate for 5 years, which was the best option at the time. I found the process straight forward, I needed to visit a branch to confirm ID. There is no branch local to me, so I went to the Stokesley branch, everything was dealt with promptly and all was fine. Logging into the account I found my initial deposit, logging is easy. There are 3 different q&a's to select, each answer is used randomly and then a random selection of the letters is used to log in securely, after the initial username and password. The initial account stopped taking further deposits (which I knew would happen) so I opened another ISA and seperate savings account both with variable rates. The rates on both of these have dropped several times, which I have been notified about in writing in advance, but they still offer a good rate. I transfer money into the account several times per month via internet banking, it usually shows the same or next day. I have withdrawn money online and this been transferred to another bank account relatively quickly, not express speed but fast enough. I will continue to use until another savings provider offers a better option.

“False Advertising”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Carol2310 on 29/10/2015

This is the second time I have applied for a mortgage package that apparently doesn't exist and I will be contacting the Advertising Standards authority. She then stated that their products had changed overnight (coincidence) and spent 1/2 hour talking me out of using them and then said I was too honest and because the call was being recorded they couldn't accept my application! Customer service - you must be joking!

“harrasment at work”

★☆☆☆☆

written by hsBrady294 on 11/07/2015

This is by far the worst employer I have had. I recieved agest comments on a regular basis e.g. "why don't you work with people your own age" "when are you retiring" "what can a 50yr old do". Manegment were aware of these and eventually spoke to the perpetrators. I did not have a personal development plan yet younger colleagues and student placements do (so much for the people stratergy). This all seemed to follow on from a complaint against a team leader for harrasment, who later was promoted to a managerial position. I also questioned a decision made by a manager; there was no procedure in place to guide the decision making prosess - at this stage I recieved what was termed as friedly advice, to "get some outside help as I would need it". One of the main unwarrented comments came from the senior manager of the IT Services Group. He stated that he knew I was stressed out due to my mother being unwell. She had died the previous year.

“Unprofessional Customer Service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Mario256 on 04/06/2014

Opened a 5yr internet ISA account and wanted to transfer another ISA into it. After a month when this transfer hadn't taken place rang customer services to check what was happening. A flustered employee obviously didn't understand the ISA system and tried to bluff his way round it, then told me he would have to look into it further would I mind holding on and when I said 'yes of course' he cut me off!! Taking this as a sign of things to come I didn't bother to phone back just moved my money elsewhere.

“Difficult”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 487Caldwell on 16/04/2014

Opened a cash ISA, and called up to confirm everything was set up. This was confirmed. 2 months later I check my statement and nothing has happened. I call up and am told that I have to go online and make some sort of confirmation, which I do. A month later I get an e-mail from Newcastle saying there has been a problem with my transfer, because the money is coming out of the ISA instead of in. I call up, am told to go online, abandon the transaction, and set up a new one, which I do. 2/3 months later, I re-check online. The new transaction is working fine, but the old one is also still continuing. I continue to try and cancel this transaction to no avail. I use online banking all the time, and find it generally very easy, however in this case, it was almost impossible to use and Newcastle have screwed me over time and time again! Do not use, difficult and very unhelpful staff!

“The worst service I have ever experienced”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Donnelly402 on 20/03/2014

Having applied for a mortgage with them in December, and spent 3 months asking for extra information, they have now sent me a letter stating that we 'don't meet their risk assessment' and are declining the case. They add that no further discussion will be entered into. An absolute disgrace!

“Great savings rates but shocking customer service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by cathysissens on 23/02/2014

I opened a 30 day notice - 5yr fixed term ISA on a great rate after seeing it on Martin Lewis's website. It was due to mature this August but as I'm buying a house, I needed the money...so I tried to get my money back. The 30 days notice was put on the account no problem. I just had to send them confirmation in writing which I did. That's when the fun and games started. When I phoned to check all was proceding ok, they told me the letter had never arrived and must have been 'lost in the post' so I resent the letter(recorded delivery this time). This letter arrived but I then received a call telling me they couldn't give me my money as I'd changed my name (a lot happens in 5 years...I'm now divorced!). I had alerted them to this at the time, but they had not actioned the request (passport and driving license not being enough proof of ID). To give them their due, they had informed me of this by letter and they requested the deed poll. I sent a certified copy of the deed poll and assumed this had been actioned, however, it turns out this was also 'lost in the post'. How unlucky? So in a last ditch attempt to get my money before my house sale completed, I sent the original copy of my deed poll to them (risky but seemingly necessary - so recorded delivery once again) with a polite note asking that they return it to me using recorded delivery. Given how important it was to them to have my deed poll before they gave me my £5000 back, you'd think they would understand - especially when you take into account the mishaps with post that obviously occur frequently with the Newcastle! Anyway - they did receive it, the money has finally been released (after 40 days) but just to add insult to injury, the deed poll was handed to me by one of my neighbours (wrongly delivered!) and very much unsigned for/unrecorded, totally bent and battered. I am so unimpressed that I'm leaving a review - not my thing usually!

“Newcastle Bldg Soc. mercenary end of mort. term tactics.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by labrador67 on 11/11/2013

At the end of the mortgage term, a perfectly lucid and reasonable series of interrogatives on procedure and the taking of fees that were non-contracted, resulted in 10 weeks of largely ephemeral and repetitious responses, concluding with barely any acknowledgement or apology. BE WARNED. At the end of the mortgage term, having made more than twice the loan I was repaying, they took fees with no permissions as a last-grab for a few pounds for storage fees in respect of deeds. In accordance with their obvious in-house policy of protecting their oh so sensitive employees, they then passed me and my personal finance details from pillar to post and never phoned me once during the complaint process. I initiated contact at the branch in Cramlington and asked a for an immediate meeting. This, of course, never happened. This kind of personal service only comes when you want to give them money - or they're in danger of missing one of your payments! NBS. Not recommended.

“Avoid Like the Plague”

★☆☆☆☆

written by themaroonultra on 21/06/2013

Having dealt with this Newcastle BS for a mortgage application, I can say with a degree of certainty that I have never experienced incompetence and poor service quite like it. 1 month to even begin looking at the application, impossible to contact anyone with any knowledge whatsover of the mortgage market regarding the case via telephone or email and to top it all off blunt and unpleasant CUstomer Service people manning their call centre. If you're looking for a straightforward, stress free experience when applying for your mortgage, I strongly suggest you go elsewhere!

I found exactly the same thing. Paid a fortune in fees to this company only for them to decline my application back in January on my completion date after having approved my mortgage.

An absolutely horrendous company to deal with. Avoid them at all costs and do not be fooled by their relatively attractive headline rates. Go with a mainstream lender. These guys are simply not worth the stress.

Newcastle is an excellent building society with great opportunities to help you invest and save money. The staff are well trained and offer loads of great advice. Excellent rates to attract new members. Not enough branches.
