Good Points: None.
General comments: I have nothing good to say about Abbey current account. I'm in the process of closing my accounts. Client service is awful. Too many automated messages. Waiting time too long. Too much passing to another dept. Also be passed from pillar to post and have to go through security for every new person you speak to (there will be more than one). My cards have been cancelled 3 times now for no apparent reason despite in 10 years never been overdrawn.

I have had this account for a number of years but I have become exasperated by unkept promises of return phone calls. I am about to transfer to another bank's account.

I've had it with Abbey - after 11 years they've finally upset me enough that I'm voting with my feet. If you're thinking of joining them, my advice would be to think again.

I hate Abbey! I have been a customer for 20 years and watched the decline into this current mess they laughably call a "service". They have no idea which departments exist and I am sick of being told to "visit my local branch" when my account clearly states that I have moved abroad. I have been told about 6 times that they do "not have a telegraphic transfer team" despite having sent letters and faxes to the team myself. A few days ago, I was transferred to 5 different departments, the 5th was a ...

A few years I moved my principle banking away from Abbey because they were not prepared to offer a bridging loan unless I took out a mortgage with them. The delays they caused in getting the bridging in place lost me the house I was after.
I am now shutting down my last Abbey account as I have moved house and Abbey are refusing to recognise my repeated instructions to change my address. They will not do it over the phone and have lost the written form they made me fill out. They would rather se ...

I've been with the Abbey for 10 years and I had a mortgage with them which they recommended a 5 year fixed rate and as soon as I took out the mortgage the interest rates fell BIG TIME. So i was paying well over £150 a month more than I should have. Ok fair enough these things happen, but occasionally I might be a little short for my direct debts, maybe only 3p and I know I'm to blame but there is no give or take with them. They will slap charges on you straight away even if I did phone up ...

I never had to call customer services often in the past, I had to a few weeks ago and was shocked at the difference of quality of service you get now compared to what it used to be a few years ago.
When the online banking website was experiencing some difficulties a few weeks ago, I have called them to enquire about the balance on the main page not corresponding with the balance on my statements and some transactions not showing on my statements page, I had an arrogant man on the phone and I as ...

I was with Abbey for about 8 years before they were taken over by Santander the Spanish Bank, then everything started to go downhill. I hate their call centres. You're not sure which country you will end up in, and the foreign staff all use English names, which is a personal pet hate. The charges were (I think they recently changed) horrendous, because of a mix up in d/ds (partly my fault) and a salary payment I had three £30 charges slapped on me for d/ds paid out. The call centre staf ...

Myself and my partner recently applied for a loan. We received no response for 2 weeks, so I gave them a ring, to which they replied an answer would follow shortly. No answer; so another call, and there were problems with our address. That was resolved, but no idea as to why the application was still stalled. Abbey National said we would get an answer in 24 hours. No answer. Interest rates have increased by this point, and it's 14 days later. Their website and phone messages say "5 days" maximu ...

I've been a customer of Abbey in its various forms for nearly 30 years, and until 2 years ago, I had never experienced any problems.
Abbey managed to set up and activate a standing order on my account two years after the date I had actually requested it to start, and after I had ended up paying the end recipient in full anyway. I have since spent considerable time and effort trying to arrange a recall of the errant money back to my account. Contacting the offshore call centre has resulted in ...

When my partner and I first joined the bank in 2001 we were very impressed, our mortgage advisor was wonderful and very knowledgeable, and setting up our accounts (banking, savings and ISA) were done speedily and efficiently.
In 2003 we got married and moved home. Our mortgage advisor at the Abbey (who subsequently no longer works there anymore) gave us terrible advice re: our mortgage and life and critical insurance. It took 2.5 months to change my wife's name on all of our accounts as docu ...

If you like to pass the time of day ringing 0845 numbers and listening to "press one to talk to us about credit cards... two to talk to someone on the moon...." then Abbey is the account for you. If you collect paper for the local scouts group, then you won't even have to leave your home to collect it. Several bag loads will be delivered directly to you over a few weeks. They used to be a genuine local service, which has since sold out at the obvious expense to the customer. A great shame. I hav ...

Abbey National are a complete waste of time as a bank. My salary of over 40K is regularly credited to the account, but they still mess me around. They are not worth your time of day. Their customer service is provided by people in the middle of the jungle on the bush Telegraph. I have since changed to HSBC with no problems.

Abbey National have been trouble since day one. I spent almost 2 months setting up my bank account, with phone calls and letters, and going into my local branch etc., and then finally I received my bank card, but it was the wrong one!! I rang them up four different times at their call centre in India, and every time I was told that I had to have the card they'd sent me until 3 months had passed. I had real communication problems and politely asked if I could speak to someone from Britain. As soo ...

We have had our joint account with the Abbey for about 17 years, and up until recently we have always found them to be helpful when asked, but over the last 2 years things seem to have changed. We moved our mortgage due to their inflexibility, even though we had been with them for 15 years, and now, because of the same reason I am now looking for another current account, where hopefully I will get someone that understands me and where I can understand them when I phone them, as well as a bank t ...

I have used Abbey National for nearly 20 years; for many products and accounts, but the service I have been receiving in the last 2 years has been disgusting. I have had monies transferred into wrong accounts (not my accounts) or not transferred at all in a couple of cases. What I must say is, that all of the mistakes have happened when I have dealt with their overseas call centres. They cannot seem to get anything right. Now, as of today, they have stopped me using my internet banking and telep ...

I was moving house, and I phoned the Abbey National to give them the new address, and I was told I had to go to a branch to do it. The two other banks that I'm with did it over the phone. I asked them to stop sending statements and cheque books until I could get into a branch. They WON'T! It turns out that they have sent a new blank cheque book to an address I no longer live at! Abbey, the bank with no security measures should be their new motto.

I have had an Abbey National current account since 1973, and gradually the personal service has gone. They don't seem to have any loyalty anymore to their customers. I was just £16 overdrawn this month. I didn't notice and it was my fault, but I was charged £20 for for being overdrawn and £30 for a direct debit that went out for £35, and also £30 for a cheque of £10, so a total of £80 has been charged. I'm disgusted, and I am moving after all these yea ...
