“Debenhams Card: Misleading information leading to charges.”

I got a Debenhams credit card in 2009, paid my balance each month on time, and cleared the balance in mid-2010. Not used it since. After a while Debenhams sent various letters saying the account would be closed after a certain period of months had elapsed. When it elapsed I got a final letter confirming the account was closed. Do not take out this card! It's a credit card and not a store/loyalty card even if they only tell you that! You get 10% off purchases but pay 20% interest! What kind of loyalty and reward is that? Also, the clerks in Debenhams do not give out all the information needed. They have to tell you it needs a credit check but they never do! BEWARE! (read more)

“Don't bother opening a debenhams store /credit card ”

“Shocking Reflection On Santander and Debenhams”

If you encounter any sort of problem while using this card - you're on your own as you'd be wrong to expect any kind of assistance from their customer services. I called to report a credit to my account hadn't been applied - chased this up three weeks later to be reassured that yes they had all of the details logged from my call and no, they won't look into it until I wrote in with the same details. I had the same problem a couple of years ago - looks like nothing has changed. Don't deal with their call centre who are worse than useless. To get through to their complaints team in the UK call 0871 522 5167 or write to Complaints Referral Team, Santander Cards, Capital House Unit A, Bruntcliffe Way, Morley, Leeds LS27 0JG. I would only post by recorded delivery as well.

For security I log on to my online account each morning and again at night to ensure there are no fraudulent transactions. Same thing has happened to me as above. I am very annoyed as I manage my account online and have never experienced this before. Why block you out of your account two months before the expiry date? How do I keep track of my spending and owed payments? If you need to deactivate the account do so a month before or after the issuing of the statement prior to card expiry date. I mean I am still able to use the current card. If i default then surely it is Santander's fault? Can the Customer Services operate on my level when I am dealing with my transactions? No, they cannot see the workings of my mind. And why can't we e-mail them as a result instead of paying to call them? Or a message should display saying why we need to (re-)activate our online account (account management online - not if they block us out of it!)

Hi this has just happened to me as well, i'm not happy at all, since I have no way of changing my statements back to paper without access to my online account. I have to ring up to check and at a cost of 10p and minutes its a joke. When I asked for someone to call be back to see what is happening with my complaint they said that doesn't not happen and the only person to call back will be the manager (whom I was speaking to already). My next step in to go into a Debenhams store because you only get somewhere when you see people face to face. Some great information here thanks guy's

I don't think going into a Debenhams store will help as their name only appears on the card, they don't actually issue it. As Santander are the card issuer, perhaps calling into one of their branches may be of more help to you.

There is nothing working here. The phonesevives takes ages to click through. I have tried to register the account but the forms do not work. I have transfered money in to pay my bill of but the payment bounced because the information on the payslip is wrong or at least unclear. No way to contact but through the overpriced phoneline. Horrible, horrible, horrible. I will close the account as soon as the baking hours are open as the so calle 24/7 service is alos not working. (read more)

Today cancelled my Debenhams Goldcard after being a loyal customer for over 15 years. I had received a late payment £12 charge and £4.45 interest after "failing to make a minimum payment". This was because no statement had been received. After phoning their customer "service" in India, a very polite but largely unintelligible assistant informed me there was nothing they could do. Snap. Both my daughter and myself have just had same experience which does seem a bit too much of a coincidence as we do not live at the same address. My daughter also phoned and after costly telephone call she was informed that she would need to phone back to cancel her card. Totally disgusted.

Yes this seems to be a trend which surely Debenhams would not wish to sustain in the current trading conditions. I am also a gold cardholder and having received two cards in the same envelope for my partner and I, I decided to ring up to get them activated. One of the secuirty questions was about how many cards belonged to the card; having correctly answered two I was then told that the reactivation had been set up. Two days later I find that my partner's card was declined in Debenhams; following another call I am told that I only activated one card. The service was unhelpful and they could not move away from their algorithm so in my frustration decided to cancel the card and shop elsewhere. The agent was not in the least interested or bothered. Absolute rubbish - no wonder John Lewis is wiping the floor with them all.

I opened up a Debenhams credit card last year as I was struggling with moving, on top of christmas etc, paid it off in April and asked for the account to be closed. This person on the other end of the phone was soo hard to understand it was shocking and she obviously didn't understand CLOSE MY ACCOUNT as 7 months later the card and account is still active! Took 3 phone calls to a foreign call centre to try and find out why my account had been blocked. Apprently this was due to mail being returned to themselves, although a little confused as to how this could happen as I would have to have returned it myself saying I no longer live at my current address! Absolutely impossible to make a payment. I tried to sign up on line, but account number is different to card number, when I eventually found that, I requested a reminder for my password, dispite paste and copied, it would not accept. cannot read the telephone number on he reverse of my card, as my name is printed through it and is totally illegible. rang the 24/7 customer service number to hear automated message that office is now closed.... 9.30pm it closes. I have eventually got through to the automated service this morning on the same number, so why isnt an automated service working after 21.30?? I usually go into store to make my payment with no problem at any till, but due to holidays could not do this for this month's payment. Dont make it easy at all for customers. I wont be doing it again that's for sure. Love the store and find it convenient to order on line and have it delivered to my family to their local store.

“Huge error by Santander”

In July 2012 I used the automated service to pay my statement and was transferred immediately to an operator in India. I asked to process for the balance of my account which was £38.16. To my horror one day later when I attempted to use the Visa card I had used to pay my Debenhams statement my card was declined. Having received a late payment fee and interest went into panic!! and found my old statement. On the front it states minimum payment due date 30 june 12 checked my receipt which I paid cash at the store that I purchased the items from 30 June at 10.12am. I was very heavily pressured into joining the Debenhams store card scheme and as in general I like the Debenhams shops I didn't mind much. But after paying my first statement with plenty of time to spare, my new statement tells me that I have been charged £12 late payment fee plus £3.27 interest. This is a woolly hat saga baa. Seldom use my card so just to get the offers they send, I put my second woolly hat purchase on my card, it cost £8.75 in sale I loved it, and as I had lost the first leaving it on a coach I needed a replacement I expect someone else will be loving it too! The Debenhams card is managed by Santander and they have to be the worst banking organisation in the world! They are aggressive, rude, vicious in their actions and make it totally impossible to pay your card off. Debenhams seem not to care that many customers refuse to use their store because of the problems they have with santander. They would get much lower ratings on this site if you could award them zero! Don't be tempted by the admittedly good discounts - they make it so difficult to pay the card off, you may end up like me, with a late payment penalty, possible damage to my credit rating, and hours wasted trying to pay. If they had set it up deliberately to increase profit by making payment difficult I don't think they could have done a better job. If I can find a way to close this wretched account, I will asap. Amazingly poor customer service from the offshore customer services contact centre, Debenhams don't seem to get that it damages their brand. Tried to pay online unsuccessfully, couldn't even get the system to register me online directly as all information from the application form had been input correctly, it took THREE long phone calls to get this amended only to find other information was wrong, I can't face trying to make myself understood again. The so called 'customer services helpline' is useless. The Indian staff are difficult to understand/can't understand you and are rude and unhelpful as possible. I wasn't sent statements 3 months running but was just told they had been sent and I would have to pay £3 for a copy of each statement!! No empathy, common sense or flexibility whatsover. I have had nothing but payment problems with Santander, Debenhams Store Card. I was told to make a payment on a particular day with my card on the phone and was charged a late payment fee, for the money to clear. When I called up to talk to a manager, the man on the phone said, "Put a manager on the phone, Or What?"! Through my internet banking services, I inadvertently paid a very large amount to my Debenhams credit card which was meant to pay off another card's balance. Was persuaded to take a card in October last year. I'd had one about a year ago but closed it because they'd charged me a late payment fee when I'd actually set up a direct debit that should have transferred the money. Lo and behold they did exactly the same again with this card. Rang up Santander customer service which is a call centre abroad and who I (honestly) could hardly understand. What a shame I can't give this a 0 star rating.

In February of this year I took out a store card with Debenhams in
Oxford Street in order to take advantage of the extra discount
offered. I bought a handbag for £67.50, paying £50 in gift vouchers
and the balance on the store card.

I was told at the time of purchase not to worry about the balance as I
had 30 days before it became due and in any event I would be sent a
statement which would serve as a reminder to pay the balance.

Debenhams Card Customer Service is a true nightmare. The agents are completely incompetent, unhelpful and rude. They hang up in the middle of the call if you ask your question again because they failed to answer it properly at the first attempt.

One problem I had with them was that my online account has suddenly stopped working (won't even log me in). When I tried to reset the password, I couldn't. I called the call centre to get some help. The guy asked me which browser I was using. I said... (read more)

Same as me! I was told that if I use Internet Explorer, it will definitely work! I said it's unlikely that the browser makes a difference, he insisted and virtually hung up on me. Terrible.

Took out a store card due to the initial discount, paid initial balance in full but suprise suprise Debenhams / Santander cannot find the payment. Absolutely disgusted with their call centres as the staff don't understand a word you say to them. Requested a replacement card as my chip was not working properly and it didn't arrive. In the meantime my current card had been cancelled by them, even though a new card had not been sent. This meant that the vouchers and discount vouchers I had received could not be used in store either as my card was being declined all the time. It is a service from hell, whenever you want to deal with anything concerning your account you will need to call a 0871 (10p/min) number, and your call will be answered somewhere in India by the most unhelpful and rude person. I have also had problems with the debenhams card. I got married and requested a new card, the new pin came and no card so i phoned up and they sent another card but no pin. So then i had to phone again to get that sorted. I have tried the card and it won't work with the pin. When you phone the customer services you get through to India and the people on the other end of the line are rude and can barely understand what you are saying. My expired Debenhams store card was replaced by a Santander credit card. I can use it for on-line purchases with no problems. The first time I tried to use the PIN it was not recognized by an ATM or by a terminal in a Waitrose store. I asked Santander for another PIN. Like many other on here, I opened a Debenhams and Dperkins store card with the intention of receiving the discount and paying off as soon as I received the statement. Surprise Surprise, nearly 3 months later I am still awaiting for statements, I have had continuous arguments with Santanders call centres (10p per minute!!) and received a late fee as well!!

Credit card company not able to explain interest calculation, when overcharging interest and clarification sought.

Really bad service...

- Statements missing/late
- I paid a statement by cheque a week before the due date. The cheque was cashed. But then start being harrassed by phonecalls saying I missed a payment and have to pay immediately.
- The "Customer Services" call centre is in India and is useless. Premium rate tariff, long waits to speak to someone, when you do speak to someone chances are you won't understand the strong Indian accent. They are also very unhelpful. Not received a... (read more)

In common with other reviewers I have received a late payment charge of £12 because my cheque has been posted to my account one day late, even though it was posted to arrive in time. This never happened with GE money. A nice little earner for Santander and the call handler had no patience whatsoever even though I have a hearing impairment.
This will backfire on Santander becaue people like me who have savings with the Santander bank will transfer their money elsewhere on principle. (read more)

Last August I noticed that the Debenhams statement was late arriving and it turned up 2 weeks late, I paid by cheque and posted 1st class immeadiately, however they said it cleared my account 1 day late and was forced to pay a £12 late payment fee.
I phoned the next to useless call centre in India, was transfered to a UK agent, who would not accept that the statement was sent out late and refused to cancelled the charge, interest and black mark agaist my record.
