I felt compelled to warn you away from purchasing this iron as like many others our 'Tefal pro-express' started to spit out brown stained water yesterday and tripped our electric circuit. I thought I'd give it a thorough clean before trying again, sadly to no avail - once again it started to spit out brown stained water and tripped the electric circuit. I bought the iron 18 months ago; unfortunately it is out of the 12 months warranty period. Reading the other reviews, it is clear that this... (read more)

15 mths ago I purchased the Tefal Steam generator iron model GV8461 and within the past month the lead has come off the reel which is incased within the stand. So I am not able to get the lead to extend out of the iron base. It is outside the 12 mth warranty so neither Tefal or the retailer want to know. The iron retails at £200 and Tefal offer was to get me to purchase another iron at a reduced price of £167.99 or send the faulty one off for repair with minimum charge of £64. It is day... I have had this iron for nearly a year. Periodically I did have problems with brown staining on light clothing even though I was following the instructions. Recently it has got much worse to I contacted Tefal to ask them how to fix this and this is the reply they sent back the following day: Thank you for your email regarding the above product. In order to keep your steam generator in peak condition, it is important to de-scale it regularly. In hard water areas, this procedure needs to... (read more)

I too have been plagued with this machine for no rhyme of reason spilling out dirty brown water which stains the clothes. Even paid 65 pounds for it to be overhauled a few months ago. In the meantime I purchased a Philipps generator which was half the price and so very much better. Quite shocked to read just how many people were experiencing the same fault - this surely must be ironed out (excuse the pun !) by the Tefal manufacturers. (read more)

My tefal is doing the same thing. Think I am going to write to Which and the trading standards. It is an extortionate price to pay for 1 year of grace and no way to clean it. It has just ruined a very expensive pair of cream pants! Not impressed at all!

I have had a Tefal Turbo Express Anti-Calc steam generated iron for the last 10 years and I have never ever had any problems with it infact I was so delighted I went out and bought another as the steam stopped working, however in the last 4 months I have had and returned 3 Tefal Express Turbos Anti Calc back to Argos as after 1 month they all started throwing brown water all over my garments, so I again had to wash again and again and again, later I will be returning my 3rd Tefal Express... I have now had 4 Bosch steam generator irons that have splurted out brown water. I wonder if other people have had the same experience. It really isn't good enough that these expensive machines do this. I now keep the box and send them back when they do it and get a replacement, but that is a real hassle and what I really want is an iron that doesn't do it.... any ideas? I totally agree, I too have had three tefal steam generators that have not lasted more than 18 months. They are very expensive to replace each time. I have now bought a philips steam iron at a quater of the cost. If this lasts me a year then I will have saved some money.

I found this review very helpful because...I am having the same problem with brown stains despite using the 'right water' and regular cleaning/flushing out. It has become unusable and I'm wondering whether to try and get it fixed or put it in the bin. Have had it about 18 months.

This seems a common problem that is easily fixed with a modicum of mechanical knowledge, the problem is a leaking safety relief valve which prevents proper steam being generated and causes water to pour from the base, sounds familiar then read on.Undo the small screw underneath you can get away with a small flat headed screwdriver if youre careful but the proper tool is a safety torx bit.Remove the base and you will see an aluminium cylinder and just to the side of it is the brass relief valve, now you may need a second pair of hands here, gently push down against the spring and remove the retaining circlip (carefully it may fly off and get lost or hit you in the eye!!!)then remove the spring top and spring and finally the lower insert, this is the bit that leaks, there is a rubber circle in the insert this will have a ring worn into it where steam has leaked, push this out and simply turn it over and reinsert it.All you have to do then is reassemble the relief valve and refit the circlip (careful etc,etc this is where a second pair of hands is invaluable)and simply refit the base. There you have it your iron is as good as new.

The Tefal 4293114P Pro Express Steam Generator Iron is great when new.
If you do have it on too hot and fibres get stuck to the sole-plate, they are easily removed; unlike the irons with stainless steel sole-plates. The Tefal 4293114P steam Iron is great when it is new. It has good steam output, and is a quality iron.
Unfortunately, over time the steam flex frays, and then it starts dribbling water from the iron, which is often stained.
I have had one replaced under warranty, and the second one has now gone the same way as the first one.
I would recommend you buy an extended warranty!

We have had the Iron for under two years. It started to have an intermittent fault - ie cutting out. We took it in for an annual service, it also needed replacement of fraying leads from the base unit to the iron; to be told today 15/11/05 that it was beyond economical repair and needed a new sole plate as water/steam had corroded the plate internally. The repair would have cost app £120.00 + vat. We will not be replacing it with a new Pro express we will choose more wisely

My irons covering to the steam pipe has frayed too after 2 yrs use-this has meant that water drips out of base here causing my electric to trip out.
I loved the iron and that it was easy to clean sole plate and it definitely cut ironing time buy half but will not buy another Tefal as my friend got one 6 months after me and hers has gone the same way!
