Good Points: Good handling on the road. Good gas mileage. No major problems until about 170,000 miles. Very reliable. Good looking exterior. Easy to reach user serviceable components under the hood. Fun to drive. Comfortable seats. Dashboard and controls are easy to understand. Great resale value. Never had a transmission problem. Back seats fold down to carry large items. Back window rolls down like a station wagon rear window.
Bad Points: Replaced valve cover gaskets at 80K miles. Replaced head gaskets at 180K miles. Back seats are cramped. Vehicle is overpriced and is expensive to insure. Inferior factory shocks that dont last very long.
General comments: I bought my Toyota 4Runner 3.0 l V6, 2WD with 35,000 miles on it. The first thing I replaced was the cheap factory shocks. I bought some Rancho 5000's and it drove more like a truck than a bouncy circus-mobile. Around 70,000 miles I replaced the valve cover gaskets due to leaking oil. I performed regular maintenance (oils, fluids, filters, hoses, belts, tires) and the vehicle ran great. Around 180,000 miles I had to replace the head gaskets. I took it to the dealer and paid about $2000 because no local shops would touch it. The spark plugs, air filter and distributor are easy to reach. The fuel filter is under the vehicle and is also easy to reach. This is best and most reliable car I ever owned.
