I used to be quite happy with my service but over the last year I find myself using my virgin media movies on demand as the movies on my want list just havent been released. This means I am paying twice. I find myself with about 1 in my rental queue and over 20 in my waiting list. I have had Public Enemies and Inglourious Basterds stuck on unavailable for longer than I can remember. I am starting to think that Love Film customers get dvds first and Tescos customers can wait. Time to move on!

Speedy turnaround of discs, however almost every disc they sent was damaged and would not play properly. Some discs worse than others but most liberally finger-printed!

Rubbish, gone down hill substantially in the last 2 months. Very long turnaround, pushing a week it used to be just postage time. Also many discs are damaged. They are clearly just cashing in by slowing down the turnaround time to make more money. Can't possible recommend.

Firstly, I should point out that, since some of these reviews were written management of Tesco DVD Rental has passed to the abominable LoveFilm. I've been a member since 2004 when it was powered by Video Island and have no doubt in my mind service has deteriorated since LoveFilm and it's Indian call centre came along.

Although I do receive DVDs the real trouble begins if one goes missing or is lost in the post (I have had five go missing this year, although I can't completely blame that on them) and the service has been poor in my experience.

Don't blame Tesco - it wasn't this bad when they first started the service with Video Island. I do not recommend LoveFilm - my friend signed up with them to get some Blu-Ray discs and MIGHT get the free cinema tickets he was promised at some point...

Their customer service are very efficient in that you always get a prompt acknowledgment or reply regarding a complaint, but its all useless if the problem is not sorted out as far as I am concerned.

Poor customer service, fail to take note of complaints properly and blame the customer for the inefficiency.

Tesco DVD Rental offered a much better service before Lovefilm took over, but as I haven't been able to find a better rental outfit, I will have to put up with it.

“I joined the Tesco dvd rental service which was...”

written by veronica simpleton on 03/01/2007

I joined the Tesco dvd rental service which was managed by Screen Select about 14 months ago. If you dont want the very latest films quickly they were absolutely brilliant with supplying all sorts of titles from their vast selection. They would dispatch another title to you the same day they recieved it and overall the discs were OK in quality. However Screen Select have just merged with LoveFilm and I am afraid so far the service has just not been the same.
The log in information was at first erratic but when resolved left a lot of my titles I had previously rented unrated and brings into question on the accuracy of the customer rated stars on each title.

Returned discs are not logged in as quickly and replacement discs are not often allocated to the following day. Recently I contacted Customer service because a disc I sent back had not been shown as returned. A java script generated note appeared saying that it was probably lost and therefore I must complete a form OR my account would be deducted of £20. I understand why they initiate this sort of behaviour but I objected to the big stick being waved at me where I had behaved perfectly in order. After a pointless series of communications they eventually 'found' the disc and all was supposedly well again.

Disc quality also appears to be poorer with a lot of scratched titles arriving -what on earth do some customers do with these discs?

Any email discussion with customer service whilst polite and respectable is virtually useless and often looks like a cut and paste reply.

I'll give it a month or two to see if it settles down and if not then I will go elsewhere. Maybe I will post a follow up in a couple of months - it would be a shame to leave what was once a really good company and I would love to report back a change for the better.

written by Mozza666 on 14/09/2006

Seeing as Tesco DVD rental is also a part of Video Island like Screen Select are, I have no idea why the customer services and the service itself was so bad. DVD turnaround was painful. Though give them their due, I did get them in the order I put them on my list. Then I cancelled the service with them and was told that they needed the DVD's back by the following day. I thought that wasn't a problem as I had just posted them and they would be there in the morning, but the CSR said even though they will be back with us by tomorrow, you will still be charged, and he was right! Apparently, their billing time isn't until 12pm, but even though post was normally delivered at 9, that made no difference. So I called them back up again and got to speak to a man who I couldn't understand, NOT because of an accent, but the boiled sweet that was constantly bashing off his dentures!! It was only after I got onto the manager, that she kindly apologised for the service that I had received and that she would speak with the boiled sweet bloke and give him a warning, personally!! Did it ever happen? I don't care! I got my money back!!

Some of the other reviews are a little harsh, you need to be realistic and compare this with other similar packages. However I have tried others and would rate this below Blockbuster and Sainsbury's (Blockbuster being the best - and double disks only count as one rental). I would recommend giving it a try and seeing if it is for you. If you have one title that you want to watch better to get in the car and go to a video store. However if you have a lot of films to see, especially older stuff and stuff from the TV it can work. Also I had a free trial, kept it going for a month or two, then left to try others, after a couple of months they send me a voucher for 3 months for the price of 1 - that is good value even with the slow turnaround.

In summary - give it a try, good if you are not fussy, watch all the old stuff you never got round to, then try another service.

written by mwbaker on 22/03/2005

After a good free trial with Tesco DVD Rental I went ahead and paid my money. Apart from the odd disk seeming to take an age to get back to them things went OK. 19 titles in the first month was more than enough. However recently the service has proved frustrating to say the least. Disks take for ever to be shown as returned and then new disks can take 2 days to be allocated. This month with Tesco will be my last. Cheapest isn't best in this case!!!
