Cannot flaw their Broadband service though there homepage is a little basic.
Telephone service is exactly what it says on the tin.
They've now been bought over by Virgin Media so I'm aware that this review is pretty pointless. I only did it cos there was only one other review and it made out it was fantastic. No, Mr, it is not!

The End!

I have dismissed Telewest as broadband and phone supplier. If their services match their customer service department then I don't want to know.

“Telewest Broadband is the smallest of the two cable...”

★★★★★

written by weesteev on 20/03/2005

Telewest Broadband is the smallest of the two cable companies in the UK providing service to 1.7 million customers from Edinburgh to Plymouth. I have used the service for over a year now and am thouroughly impressed by the Broadband and telephone services. The TV service isnt the best but provides a menu system easier to use than Sky's and also less junk channels which stremalines the package meaning we pay less for our packages. The broadband services are all unrestricted and provide super fast access at competitive prices. The telephone service has a few issues with billing and such as reviewed above but not issues that would merit switching to another provider. Besides some issues with the billing and the telephone features that dont match BT's options, there is really no way you should be without Telewest if you live in a cabled area.

written by magpie5774 on 24/04/2007

I changed to Telewest Broadband from Sky because of Sky's constant unannounced price hikes. Telewest it seems is worse, and since their change to Virgin it's getting really bad. I have had nothing but problems from day one. I am on the phone to them monthly due to the set top box not working and mistakes in the billing. The set top box is beyond slow. Just sit and count 6 seconds - it doesn't sound a lot, but this is the delay from pressing the change channel button to it actually working on the TV. I dread getting a bill now, because this means a monthly whinge to whoever answers my call at Virgin. And don't get me started on Sky taking their channels back. All I ever get is Virgin's stock reply 'to accommodate this we're upgrading our Virgin TV service to include your favourite programmes'. I am sick of being told what my favourite programmes are! I can't wait for my contract to end so I can upgrade my service to a bog standard freeview box!!

I'm getting out - telewest is draining my bank account - they don't seem to have a budget package except for new customers - it costs me over £50 month these days for basic tv, basic bb, and free evening/weekend calls - i can do that for half the price with bt, virgin & freeview - good riddance!

I suspect that if you get out of Telewest you shouldn't be heading for Virgin, because Virgin has taken over NTL Telewest, so you would be getting the same thing! However, the new rates are much lower because of the war with Sky.

written by darylmushtaq on 09/11/2006

I provide IT support for home users, often in the form of trouble shooting broadband. I have only ever visited one Telewest customer. Their support had resolved the problem within 10 minutes of me dialing them.

Compare that to the four hours that I have spent on the the phone to BT in one day alone.

In the event of a fault you don't have to try to convince someone to convince BT to come out and check the line manually or at the exchange.

Telewest Broadband are the only ISP that I would recommend.

I work for Telewest and agree with a lot of the comments made here but I need to point out a few things - the meg of broadband is also governed by the website you are visiting so if they only run on 2 meg that is the speed you you will receive. The only complaint I have is that often at peak periods there can be quite a queue on the phone help line.

Everything on these computers are geared up to promote sales and goods, or products, the help from telephones are geared up to rip some customers off, the self help on screen programs, are wonderful if you were a computer expert and had 15yrs of college study. All they do is ask questions, some don't refer to the problem, there is no real help for idiots like me, and you dare not ask how to cancel your account, like every other company, they keep giving you phone numbers or will pas you right around the world rather than let you cancel, hence the reason i am off to the bank to cancel the direct debit, i can not afford to pay for nothing.
As that is all i have got from this company, i don't think i can get e-mails in, yet as its on the blink again, i only live off a state pension, but i shall now have to get an expert in to fix this junk from blueyonder.

They provide a high quality uncapped service, which I am very happy with, and staff are very polite and helpful when speaking to them over the phone.

I had some problems with my monthly bills, and my box wasn't working properly when it was first installed. I was only able to access some channels on the starter package. I was on hold for long periods of time when on the phone for a query, but all in all, I am pleased with the service. My problems were solved effectively, and the Telewest service is good value for money too.

“After now using the Telewest Broadband service for...”

★★★★★

written by ismahaunyb on 14/08/2006

After now using the Telewest Broadband service for over a year and a half, I must say that this is by far the most reliable service I have ever used. Compared to my former ISP (cough cough) Wanadoo, Telewest (or NTL Telewest) has outshone it in every aspect I consider to be key.

Installation: Yes, you have to have a big fat cable come in from the street to provide you with connectivity to the internet, but it's not the end of the world. From the moment the modem is installed, the wait is normally no longer than 10 minutes to get an active connection going. The modem setup is extremely easy, and the modem itself (unless it's now changed) is sturdy and reliable.
The connection is even more reliable, and in my entire time using this service, I can only recall one point where it went out for about 2 hours. It doesn't drop connections, and it is very good when it comes to gaming. I hooked up seamlessly to my wireless router, and I have never looked back since.

Another benefit is that all users will get speed increases when they upgrade the network and increase their maximum speed, at no extra cost. Bargain!!

“I would steer clear of Telewest Broadband I have been...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by chemer2011 on 01/08/2006

I would steer clear of Telewest Broadband I have been fobbed off more times than I care to recall. They really have no clue. You ring up there service and they basically blame you for the fault to the broadband. I know my computers and have built a few in my time. Its insulting when they blame me and say it's my computer or my firewall. Like I don't know how to switch one on or off.

The simple answer is this:

THEY ARE CUTTING THE BANDWIDTH AND YOU ARE PAYING FOR IT.

For instance I had a 10 meg line but was getting 4 meg speeds. So I downgraded it to 4 meg and guess what???? Yes you guessed it, it went down to just a 2 meg connection.

If I ran an illegal uncapper software they would be really upset at me. Yet they are doing the same by stealing my bandwidth.

I have been with Telwest since 2000 and have noticed a rapid decline in their service.

It used to have very proficient IT Technicians that would get you up and runing in minutes, not hours. Now it has a lot of people that obviously do not want to be there. One woman even yawned on the phone whilst sorting out my problem and it was like being interrogated by the Spanish Inquisition. My wife works in a call centre and she would never dream of acting like this.

I agree entirely about the service desk, which is in Scotland, I think. The telephone service could not provide both diversion and voicemail simultaneously; facilities which are important for my business. Their help desk and engineers didn't know this and kept switching from one to the other with a days delay, when what I needed was to have both on call.
<br/>
<br/>Their service desk sent many threatening letters demanding £250 for each piece of equipment! It was only when I took the legal route for their failure to provide advertised services and sent all their equipment back by recorded post that Telewest Broadband backed down and refunded their charges.

I have, or should I say, had been with Telewest since 2000.
<br/>
<br/>Coming from a 56k modem to a 2Mb broadband connection is certainly something. It started off brilliantly with Telewest, and they frequently "upgraded" my speed for free around every year.
<br/>
<br/>I decided to go wireless around the home, as I had purchased a laptop. I knew fully that Telewest does not support wireless or third party routers, but it worked for many years, until the start of August 2006.
<br/>
<br/>I noticed that my download speed was merely around double to what a 56k modem was, so straight away, I phoned Telewest to see what the problem was. I believed it to be a fault of the modem, as my data light kept on going off. The modem - it is their property - this is also in the contract.
<br/>
<br/>After haggling with the person on the phone stating that it's their property, I got passed on to another man, who told me to disconnect my router, and plug the modem in through a USB connection.
<br/>
<br/>The man then said it could be three things, 1st - virus/spyware. 2nd - a firewall problem, and 3rd, a problem with the modem.
<br/>
<br/>Anyway, he searched my PC, and there was no virus, or a firewall problem - yet he still couldn't agree to the fact the it was the modem. He then blamed my router, which of course was disconnected, and then he blamed my PC.
<br/>
<br/>At the end of the day, being a loyal customer for over 6 years, and the fact that I was not receiving a service, really cheesed me off. But what was I to do? Pay £75 for an engineer to come out, even though the modem is their property... I don't think so!!
<br/>
<br/>Overall, I can't help thinking that problems have emerged since NTL merged with Telewest. Sadly, as Telewest don't support wireless routers, then what chance does it stand in the future?
<br/>
<br/>Future proof yourselves everyone!

I disagree I went to gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk and downloaded programs from there and I still got rubbish speeds. My friends got twice as fast as me for the same money.
<br/>
<br/>My friends are with BT and NTL. Although NTL have joined forces with Telewest they are still miles apart when it comes to reliability and customer service.

Actually the speeds you are getting with your service sound about right... You will never experience full speed Internet because of a little term known as contention ratio (shared connection)... Please read up on it... some websites are as follows http://www.chooseisp.co.uk/broadband-faq/contention-ratio.html ... http://www.idnet.net/broadband/contentionratio.jsp ... unfortunately to make Internet affordable they have had to do this so really no matter where you go you will never experience true speeds unless you are one of the few lucky people paying for a 1:1 connection and/or live right next to the exchange. I'm on Telewest and I think their service is pretty standard, the reason I stay with them is because the service I have received from them is miles more reliable than the other 3 providers I used in the past.

“My boyfriend was flat sharing last year. When I moved...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by JoLR on 21/07/2006

My boyfriend was flat sharing last year. When I moved in and his flatmate moved out, we took over the Telewest account, which was in the flatmates name. We ended up having to pay a fortune, but at least it was sorted EVENTUALLY, or so we thought.

We moved house in April.

Checking my statements today, they've taken over £200 out. I phoned, and the lady I spoke to said she couldn't talk to me as I didn't have the bill in front of me. I told her the reason was that we weren't getting them. She said my boyfriend had called them and asked for them to be sent elsewhere, which obviously he hadn't, as he happens to have a brain.

My boyfriend then called, and was told his old flatmates was still listed as the account holder! He's never even been in our new place, let alone lived in it. My boyfriend was busy at work, so he asked for my name to be added so I could discuss account queries.

I then phoned Telewest again. But no, they still wouldn't discuss it with me!

Another phone call this evening... We've worked out why we have to pay £200, (we had to pay more when we moved house, apparently), but this months bill is nearly the same again. They have my boyfriend down as owing £90, and have sent it on to the credit agency, so now he's probably blacklisted (no wonder he can't get a new credit card). No-one knows where this £90 has come from. Maybe Telewest were a bit short this month.

Oh, and they guy tonight says we had opted for email bills. Er, no we hadn't.

Arghhh.

The service from Telewest is great. I have been using it for three years in university and love it. Broadband by itself is rather expensive though and I recommend getting a package. I have since moved out of the Telewest catchment area and have AOL which I feel is a poor performer in comparison

“A member of our family was living in the US and there...”

★★☆☆☆

written by jadedshade on 02/05/2006

A member of our family was living in the US and there was an emergency, consequently we had to make calls to the US a lot.
Telewest kept harrasing us every couple of days to let us know the bill was going to be over £200 (the package price is normally about £130), they were constantly asking us if we were going to pay the bill, which wasn't due for about 15 days, we informed them that we were going to pay whatever the bill came out to closer to the due date and informed them it was ok they could stop calling us. The harrassment continued.
Then they cancelled our entire service without warning about a week before the bill was even due, they informed us that they would not turn it back on until we made a payment, at this point we hadn't even received a bill from them to know what to pay!
Not a good company, no respect for their customers, we have been with them for about 6 years. We are now seeking a different service provider.
