A colleague of mine recommended this site to me and and I had a look at what they could offer, they held themselves out to be a well run and well managed site, so I decided to join. The assistance you can get from the volunteers on the message boards is outstanding, however that is about the only good service provided as Genes Reunited personnel really need an intensive course in customer relations. I dont mind sites charging for services thats fine. What make me angry is when a service says it free to register and then when you enter all your details and create an account only then do you find that you cant use the site without paying. Free to register implies some form of free access of a fremium service but apparently not? Destroyed any sense of credibility or trust for me. BYE. (read more)

I used the site for some years from 2002, then didn't renew my membership for around 5 years. I went back to it this year - and I wish I hadn't. There are innumerable ongoing problems with the site, and a management team which doesn't appear to have the first idea of what they are doing. I am only a member on the lowest level and only use GENES REUNITED to record my tree now. I had no problems until they changed their site. Since the "new look" GR it is hopeless. It has multiple 'issues' and leaves me frustrated and fed up. One of the many problems is that it insists that you change all the dates to a new format with a max of 10 digits - but when you do this it says you have more than 10 digits (eg 12/10/1865) and won't accept it so you have to leave out things to record the... I agree completely !
The site has become completely unusable.
It refuses to update correctly and one wastes a lot of time adding data only to find that it has not been stored.
The program is forever indicating that it has not refreshed correctly .
I suspect that a lot of geneologists will move their data to another more reliable storage system.

I have been using the Genesreunited site for several years and have been very happy with it, but recently they have tried to make it flashier. The result seems to be that it is now much less stable and reliable than it was. Genes Reunited (GR) does not listen to its members. It is not a social networking site but is a dedicated Genealogy/Family History website. The site is not moderated and cyber bulling has been rife in the past. This really needs addressing, especially moderation on boards. GR seems to think the older members are a pain in the rear. It is a great site, full of willing people who take the time to help and assist each other. I think it represents good value for money except possibly in the following instances: Hot Matches - These tend to only come through every few montsh and can't get past the letters A & B. I cannot see the 'value for money' when there are different rates for people using the same service. Some people pay 4x as much as others. No other website sets a wall between its members.
Written on: 25/05/2011
I find the site to be slipping in value, for what it has and for the price it offers I feel money is their object. It needs better communication between members and between admin, there are far too many discrepancies, not enough regulation. I feel the company needs to moderate the site yet they also need to keep an overall fairness to each member. Genes reunited has no equality with it's members, it tends to hold favourites and allows the membership cost to be thrown in the face of new... (read more)

I joined Genes Reunited after watching Long Lost family. Genes Reunited is a great place to srat your family history, they have a great community section and it is free to build yor tree. The paying members of this website who help other members with their brick walls on the 'Find Ancestors' discussion board are fabulous I can say from personal experience with the help I have had there. Unfortunately the way the boards are operated by the company is not as fabulous. The new 'Find living relatives' board in particular is a waste of time and money for the people using it and a vexing situation for people concerned about personal privacy on the internet. Sadly it seems that the company is more interested in the fees paid by people drawn in by its publicity campaigns than it is in making their experience a productive one. Top marks to the members of the site but not so much to the company running it.
