Don't use it unless you don't care whether the programme will actually be recorded.

As someone else said - when it's good it's fairly good; when it's bad, it's bloody awful! I've thrown away at least 6 different - make DVDs which have been rendered useless by this machine, and until reading these reviews tonight, I thought it must have been something I was doing wrong. Included in this list of DVDs is Philips!!!

An example - I've used a Samsung dvd+rw for about three weeks now, without problem; suddenly it's told me that it's the wrong type of disc!!!!

I've had 18 months of trouble with my Philips DVD-R610 Recorder. The 610 was eventually replaced with the 3305, another equally bad machine, I think I'm on the 5th. I refuse to lie down and accept such bad service, I think Philips must dread hearing from me now. The machines are just totally incapable of working correctly. My latest replacement, 2 weeks old, is already showing faults, what a surprise, as if I'd expect anything else, but I'll carry on expecting repairs or replacements free of cha ...

What a crock the Philips DVD-R610 DVD Recorder is. I needed a software update before we could even use it! Bad omen - oh yes! It was returned to Philips 3 times, as it kept losing memory, locked discs in the draw, and could not read the disc. It is the biggest waste of money I have ever had the misfortune to make.

I first bought a Philips DVD recorder in 2001. It went faulty almost immediately. Philips insisted that I sent it to Belgium for repair, but they then agreed to replace it with another model - by then much cheaper models were offering the same features as the beefy looking 1000. The replacement lasted several months, and this too developed similar faults, such as freezing and jumping several frames at a time. They repaired this (about 10 days) and the repair lasted a few months and started again ...

If you want a machine to record as programmed, and be able to play them back... do not buy the Philips DVD-R610 DVD recorder. A total waste of money, and a really rotten Christmas present!!

The Philips DVD-R610 DVD recorder is a disgrace to the good name of Philips. After a few uses the unit has eaten my DVD and won't return it (it says it is Blocked).

What kind of DVD player/recorder requires a return to depot just to unload a DVD? Answer this one?

I purchased the Philips DVD-R610 model after two failed attempts at purchasing dvdr,s Bought a Pye and returned it within a week given another one and that to went back post haste .I finally decided to look at the 610 .It has been a nightmare to say the least .It is like this machine has a mind of its own. Starting up by its self, changing channels and of course the clock.D on't mention that clock. Goes fast one minute and runs slow the next. Rang Philips here in Ireland and was basically told t ...

We had a bad start with our first Philips DVD-R610 DVD recorder, as it didn't work at all, and had to be replaced. The replacement had various faults, one being that it would switch itself off from recording after approx. 15 minutes. A software update did solve this, though after several missed programmes. Then things went gradually downhill. The majority of disc's will no longer play, and you get a message "Disc Error". The Video Plus timer has a mind of its own. The DVD player switches itself ...

Wife brought the Philips DVD-R610 in December 2004 as a Christmas present. I'm a Panasonic buyer( TV and video) but was willing to give another brand a chance(had no choice). The fan was noisy and the clock went back half an hour and then would correct itself. Took it back and got an exchange 2 weeks later. Within a few days the replacement I got the clock changed by half an hour, when on one touch record it would power off without reason. The clock would disappear off the LCD display and then c ...

Philips have had the same problems since 2001 with the dvdr1000, and most other models after that. Some units work OK, but many units have errors simmilar to this.

My $2500 dvdr1000 went dead after only 3 years of use, and wasn't even worth the repair anymore.

I am a philips collector, but after their big failure of dvd recorders over the last 4 years, I will now recommend to people, not to buy from philips!!!!

They have had many years to fix their faulty firmware and recorders, but th ...

It is a disgrace that Philips have released the DVD-R610 to the public. I used to admire the engineering integrity of Philips! What went wrong?

After much argument, John Lewis have eventually refunded me.

I bought my DVD-R610 from a computer fair in Worthing. I was a bit sceptical as price was £125 which seemed very good.

1st machine was a complete failure, couldn't read any dvd disk reliably... got in touch with Fascom and they drove down to my flat at a time that suited me. Arrived, on time, installed new machine, it's been great. Multiregion playing, reads all my pc written dvd+R/RW and has been totally reliable.
I guess Philips have finally got software sorted because I can't identi ...

Well where do you start, the Philips DVD-R610 switches itself off, tray won't eject showing 'BLOCKED' message, has habit of switching off during recording, videoplus follows it's own start and finish times. These are amongst but a few, if you're thinking of buying one DON'T!

Tried firmware update. Still had problems. Why haven't Philips recalled the DVD-R610 model? There are some serious issues that need addressing. I put up with the faults for 6 months. Returned it to Makro, who exchanged to for a Sony. I am very reluctant to buy any other Philips Product.
    Not recomended.

The number of bugs means I am not happy with this model, but it was a present, so I stuck with it. I am now searching for the receipt, but lost...

First shock was that you had to find a blank place to record on a DVD. Surely we are past this by now?

Second shock was the noise of the thing even when not in operation

Third shock was it turning itself on/off (even recording) without any control pushed

Now I don't really trust to find the thing has recorded what I wanted.

    When it wor ...

HAHA are english people that stupid?? I am ashamed and surprised that people will continue to buy this machine again & again! I feel they should recall this unit as it's riddled with software problems, but because so many have been sent through Europe, Philips won't do a re-call. I work in the elctronics industry and WOULD NOT buy this unit for half of the RRP. HAHAHA suprised you would!
This is inside info on your doorstep. Use it, Buy a SONY!
