I have had my Punto gt for over 5 years. Since that time I have learnt many things through trial and error.
These are the modifications I have learned should not be done on this car. I hope this helps some
The car does not like atmospheric dump valves!!! It upsets the balance and smooth running of the engine. If using an atmos valve poor idling cutting out and loss of boost can be experienced. no true performance car has them!! I have binned my forge atmos in favour of a superior recirc...

I've owned my Fiat Punto for just over a year and haven't had any problems till the piston ring fried on cylinder 4 coz my radiator is in bad shape so the water pump didn't cool the cylinder. Will find out in a few days how bad the damage is when taking it apart. These are great cars but things do go wrong. I'm on my second Fiat Punto GT and still love it to this day!! No real problems with either of them apart from being a bit hard to find parts for (especially original bodywork). I bought my Fiat Punto GT1 nearly two years ago, it is an M-reg and came with 112,000 miles on the clock. Fortunately, it also came with a full Fiat service history, and had been stripped and rebuilt by a good garage.
I've owned two Fiats in the past, both of which were Tipos, the first being a 1.4 petrol, and the second a 1.9 TD. The GT was a dream for many years, and in late 2003 it became a reality. Needless to say it trounces both of my Tipos when it comes to performance, looks, and...

The Fiat Punto GT Sports Car beats my mates vtr once the boost goes up but the petrol needle drops down with it. The punto gt standerd isn't as quick as you may think. the punto gt1 is not better or faster than a gt3 or gt limited. the turbo on a gt1 only has 5bhp over the gt2 and 3 but is not any quicker.gt1s are mostly sheds that are trashed and unreliable!! there are only a few that have been looked after ie: servicing. the gt2 and gt3 have a better more reliable turbo.and has slightly less turbo lag. my gt1 was aload of rubish, i bought that car blind, but in a way still loved it. the gt3 and rare gt3 limited are the best. why buy a l-m reg when you can buy a more reliable version r s t reg with better interier and condition for slightly more money. there are good gt1s out there but if you dont know what you are looking for like me when i bought mine, you are in trouble.

Hello Mate, I've had 132 (according to the clock) out of mine, just with increasing the boost, exhaust and an airfilter. What I would say is treat your little beast to some high octane fuel from time to time - a little more expensive, but it certainly runs a lot smoother, and decreases any flat spots in the turbo that you might have. Mine's now sitting in a car graveyeard in the sky after making a mess of it.

I reckon the superchip overrode the standard ECU settings. This means that when you were racing or giving it 'full throttle', the ECU thresholds were being broken, so the turbo unit probably burst its seal due to high pressures. An example is newer cars which when red-lined, cut out preventing engine damage. It's a funny area though, as superchips allow real nutters to 'drive', but it definitely hurts the pocket. For fun, cut a hole around the bonnet heat shield directly above the dump valve, and listen to the beautifully enhanced 'dump', as the air rushes through it!!

hey man just read your review and seems you've got overheating problems.
if it just happened after the mods your induction kit could be drawing hot air in from the engine bay if you havent got cold air ducting up to the filter which also improves performance. the other overheating symptoms are lack of coolant in radiator due to a leak somewhere or a blocked radiator you can flush this out with radflush or the like. or possibly a faulty temprature sender or wiring (check the positive wire on the sender is not shorting to earth causing gauge reading to rise to full)
hope you get this sorted before you destroy your engine.

had the Fiat Punto GT about a year and never heard of it (gt version) until i asked the salesman at the time for a fun hot hatch. a test drive later and i was signing the finance details cause im still young and for a car of its speed i can afford the insurance and its 0-60 time is a respectable 7.5 secs standard. not for long a powerflow custom exhaust, an induction kit and a dastek unichip setup on the rolling road my bhp has gone from 137 to 182 and it is still very drivable at low revs... good info man im gonna start a project on my wee sisters punto gt and ill note some of your choices down which you have explained. on the styling front my friend has a gt with a flushed tailgateand the number plate is recesed in the bumper . i dont know what kit it is but its very smooth and to top it off it has a flip paint job and delocked and the rubbing strips removed. the morrette quads are also very nice. his is tuned to roughly 220bhp with water injection and a bigger turbo and inter cooler and cams. its very fast but the ayrodynamics hold it back after 120mph which is a bummer when your beating a porche boxter but at top end it catches up and passes.

The best mods on the Fiat Punto GT are cheap. chipping only scares away future buyers so try not to go mad unless you're never going to sell it. Hoses need sticky back foil to insulate them as they all touch in the wrong places ie radiator and intercooler hoses turbo lines over engine bay all get too hot. Induction kits must have heat shields as it's placed next to engine and you get more air in but it's hot so it's no gain. Heat sinks with fans along the side of the intercooler help. Turbo... When I bought my Fiat Punto GT I thought: 'no way is this motor going to outshine the renault gt' (previous motor). How wrong was I???? This car has bags of performance and, with the right tweeks, it can be a real show stopper. I've already chipped mine, K&N cone filter, lower suspension, got a scorpion cat back on board and just introduced a lovely set of 15"s. She goes as quick as she looks. Absolutely blitzed an Audi TT and blew out a calibre 4x4 turbo. Thinking about going one step... (read more)

I have had my mk 2 punto gt 4 2 years and a half now and i got to admit that its performance is impressive. It will beat most hot hatches and its a lot of fun to drive. Only problem has been electrical and also it doesn't perform very well in hot weather. Sadly i'm selling it for a japanese turbo cos at the end of the day its 0-60 is only about 8 secs and that's really slow when competing with cars of now adays!

The Fiat Punto GT is a thoroughly enjoyable car to drive that's a bargain secondhand. Still looks good and has stats that still beat more modern competitors. Performance can be brutal and torque steer is a problem. Suspention is on the hard side of rock solid leading to interior panel rattling.
Overall, despite some niggles, it's an absolute cracker!

the Punto GT is fun. it is fast, has a great body, and people stare at it in standard form. other car drivers think that it is just a normal punto and you'd be suprised at the number of people that don't relise how quick it is. it really does force you back into your seat when you put your foot to the floor. really needs wider tyres for the amount ofpower and torque that the engine supplies.
best car I have ever had

Unclebill's Response to unclebill's Review

Just to comment further on my review as UNCLEBILL.

Other things that are gone on the car is the rear breaking compensator's - they seize and leak unless changed through old age.

The car melts the ABS sender wires.

The odd break line can be corroded also front or rear... There was a recall for the break pipes under the tank..

The floor pan leaks water through to the underside of the carpet through 8 semicircular drain holes used in manufacture to drain paint out of the floor pan when dipped in a paint vat. These drain holes are not sealed properly only undersealed and WILL LEAK WATER INTO THE CAR. The carpet is rubber lined so you will never know about the flood under the carpet rotting the floor pan in places. Also the bulk head leaks water into the cabin by near the peddles.. The only singe of water in the car will be the stale smell in the cabin..

Also be careful with exhaust tuning some exhausts will loose the car so much power and make it run bad... The scorpion exhaust is the best exhaust on this car. For get all that noisy exhaust stuff its pants.. it's OK if you want to lose power.
