written by michael6157 on 13/10/2008

My 99 Grand Cherokee Laredo has been fantastic. I've changed the differential fluids and transmission fluids at 80,000 and at 140,000 and have had very little problems. The tranny did slip just before the change at 140K, but has worked fine since the change. No problems with the differentials.

written by tstevejones on 02/10/2005

I've owned my 1999 Grand Cherokee 4.7 V8 for three years now having bought it at three years old and 32000 miles. It's now done 54,000 and has never let me down. I suspected it had been in an accident which meant that the front suspension had to have some work done on it under warranty, but since then the only things which have gone wrong are the heated seats and an oil pressure sensor. Oh and the tracking is difficult to get right, but Ok when done by someone who knows what he's doing. Remember this is a very complex vehicle and I beleive it's wonderful value for money second hand. The paintwork is superb still despite being over 6 yrs old (and better than my brand new Merc!) and the power, comfort and ride for such a versatile vehicle is superb. Buy one but don't expect to have Japanese reliability. An American dream.

written by Wayne Coles on 05/05/2005

I drive this Jeep 1999 Grand Cherokee 4x4 vehile daily and we use it to go on holiday. We drove down to Southern France in July 04 it was great, loads of space and we went down at 85mph and still got about 20mpg and from 4000cc. My only real gripe is the cost of main dealer servicing, so I do not bother, I use my local guy but follow the Jeep service book. I think this is a very good 4x4 and second hand they are being given away, ok its not an X5 but then again I can have 2 Jeeps for the cost of one X5 of a similar year.

“I bought my Jeep 1999 Grand Cherokee limited 4x4 with...”

★★★★☆

written by tomdesuler on 02/12/2004

I bought my Jeep 1999 Grand Cherokee limited 4x4 with 53000 miles on it. The winshield fluid hoses need replacing as well as the emergency brake needing tightening. I noticed that the front rotors have some minscule grooves in them and agree that they did not think through the quality of the rotors for a machine this heavy. However many folks have replaced them with special rotors (and or calipers) to permanently eradicate the problem. Some unfortunate souls keep replacing them with the same parts and it keeps happening and they dont know why. (???)
I have done nothing but reseach this vehicle. I have read review after review and these are my thoughts:

This is a jeep - it isnt a car and you cant drive it like a car. It will not last in the urban jungle -buy a Nissan pathfinder or Toyota 4 runner if you want the 'full package' best of both worlds. If you want to drive the jeep like a car you will do nothing but wear out the dual transmissions and unless you accept this is an offroad vehicle and should be meticulously maintained and driven properly - of course your going to have it break down all the time. I can tell you that it appears to me that either these whinning people didnt do the homework on the vehicle, they bought a 'lemon' or they wrecked it from neglect. I drive the vehicle like its a jeep not a car and have never once had any problem whatsoever with it. Folks - respect your vehicle - research it before you buy it and maintain it afterwords. Dont just climb in it and drive around then whine ignorantly when you run it into the ground.

The real problem here is that Chrysler doesn't tell folks that this is a specialty vehicle and it needs to be driven and maintained differently than 'wannabee suvs' that are built for the highway - thus dont break down. Chrsyler should also consider the fact that it needs more quality parts and stronger breaking systems for this vehicle and might consider a recall for the calipers and rotors.

Please do not try to impose your opinion on the 1000's of other Jeep owners that have encountered quality problems with Crysler. I have driven my car off road and do not use it in town. I also have it maintained by the Dealer, or should every Jeep owner be a grease monkey? I have done nothing wrong, I paid a lot of money and have spent hours driving to the Dealer to have repairs done to the car. I have spend days without a car that I paid a lot of money for. I suggest you look at the 4x4 reviews from other manufacturers to see how they compare...and as for suggesting people research before they buy, well I did but when I bought the car the quality problems had not surfaced yet. Only now are they emerging in any volume, perhaps you are suggesting I should have used a crystal ball?

“I bought my Jeep 1999 Grand Cherokee from a BMW dealer...”

★★★★★

written by B1 GUY on 04/03/2004

I bought my Jeep 1999 Grand Cherokee from a BMW dealer in the UK and it still had two weeks' manufacturers warranty left. I highlighted that the passenger seat heating did not work and that the key fob central locking was poor. BMW dealer booked the car with Jeep to have the work done under warranty. Jeep delayed and delayed until the warranty ran out so they would not have to pay. I was told by a Jeep mechanic that Jeep were aware that they had problems with the key fob and if anyone reported a fault they would replace the unit. For some obscure reason the after-sales manager didn't want to play fair. Update - he was sacked shortly after this incidence. Luckily BMW being who they are had the work done and paid for the work "no quibble". They have also given me an extra year's warranty. Thank you BMW. I would certainly consider buying the X5 in the future. Jeep should realise that aftercare service is one of the most important parts of the business, as bad aftercare means people don't come back. Apart from those problems I am really pleased with the vehicle and would recommend one to others. Reading other comments I hope I don't have any problems with my transmission... or relays failing.

I had exactly the same problems with my Jeep, but in addition the seat & mirrors keep moving and the climate control won't heat after 30 minutes. Once it gets the car warm it then kicks in to cool but won't heat until you start the car up again.

My Jeep has been into the Jeep dealership 10 times, thank goodness it is still in warranty (just).

The Jeep Grand Cherokee 1999 is a nice truck, runs good, nice seats and 4 wheel drive. Not enough room for the family though. It leaks oil, dealer said it was spilled but its all over the garage and the truck is always low on oil. Stalls a lot and burns oil. Wiper motor broke during big storm
Its a nice truck when running right, got to keep on the problems though.

★★★★★

written by slongmuir on 14/01/2004

I swapped a Jeep Cherokee 2.5TD, 2000, for my Grand Cherokee 4.0Ltd in Sept 2002. The space in the rear of the Cherokee for adult passengers being a little restrictive.
I test drove her once and fell in love. The comfort of those seats is heaven. If your buying one the leather is a must! Heated too.
The drive is sufficiently positive. Okay, if your used to anything less than a 4x4, you will notice the wallow in corners but hey, try any other 4x4 and unless you can spend the REALLY big cahoot then this is the best of all the rest. The steering column controls are precise and you don't have to go fiddling for them unlike some 4bies. Cruise control is a sensible push button arrangement on the steering wheel, similarly remote audio controls though on the backside of the wheel.
The driving position is good too. Your not up in the heavens but you do still command a reasonable view over that squat wee thing in front on most roads.
For backseat passengers ~ well, since acquiring the GC my dad likes to Lord it in the back ~ enough said. Just don't corner too fast Scott because those leather seats do tend to allow a bit of bum slippage, especially when there is no centre armrest on that broad backseat to steady yourself on.
The boot is big. Rainy day, Castle Ashby fair, me and Jacs sat in the back CubScout fashion with the picnic spread out around us. Tom Jones never ate like that!
And now they've brought out the GC Stealth ~ does it really avoid radar?

written by wilsonr1 on 10/12/2003

Mine is the Grand Cherokee Limited 4.0 litre (68000 miles) and is a very impressive 4 X 4, both in comfort and smooth road driving refinement. LP Gas conversion has helped with running costs. 17 imperial MPG on Petrol and 15 MPG on Gas but LPG is 36p litre as opposed to 80p. Climate contol is superb and recorded the lowest air-vent temperature at our local top-up agent of 1.1'C.
The Jeep has so far coped admirably with floods, severe frosts, and scorching temperatures without batting an eyelid. I will certainly be testing the newer one when I come to change. (Which, hopefully, will be in many years time)

I have owned 2 grand cherokee's in the last 8 years and averaged 14000 miles per year.I had nothing but trouble from both of them, the chrysler brake pads have a short life span and the brake discs warp very easily. On both of them the automatic gear box was clunky and my chrysler dealer was unable to rectify this fault,I part exchanged my petrol cherokee for the latest diesel and after 3000miles the diesel engine developed a bad knock,by this time I was sick and tired of having to go to my chrysler dealer every 2-3 months and part exchanged it for a Toyota Land Cruiser which is a far better and totally reliable car.My love afair with Jeep's is over and I would advise anyone who owns one to get rid of it before is starts costing you serious money

“Against my better judgement, I recently purchased a 99...”

★★★★☆

written by Chris. on 05/08/2002

Against my better judgement, I recently purchased a 99 Grand Cherokee I-6 2WD(4WD's are few and far between down here). My previous ride was an 87 Wrangler. I love Jeeps. I put my Wrangler to the test MANY times so I decided to give the Grand Cherokee a try. Having got much of my aggression out on the Wrangler, I figured I was ready to chill for a while in comfort. The reason I said I purchased this vehicle against my better judgemt is because all you hear on sites like this is about how awful these vehicles are. So I did my homework. I researched the 99 Grand Cherokee to the T. I asked EVERY person I came into contact with driving a 99 or above about their vehicle. I'm talking at the mall, the supermarket, red lights, you name it. And this is a fact--I could not find ONE SINGLE person with a complaint. I also asked how many miles they had so I could get an idea if they just didn't have the miles that some people state their complaints start happening. NONE, ZERO. I am being COMPLETELY HONEST. I must have confronted over 50 people in a 2 month period (Grand Cherokees are everywhere) and I ALWAYS got "I love my Jeep" as the response. When I asked about the brake issue, people actually looked at me funny! I know this problem is real because I have it, but looking back on the responses, I can't believe nobody I spoke to had this problem! So after test driving a few, and being very cautious I found a 99 with 28,500 miles on it that just came off a lease. I picked it up for $15,800. Within a week I came across the well documented "wet passenger floor as a result of the AC not draining properly". I took it to the dealer because it was still under warranty. They said the drain tube needed to be pushed out further from the firewall so it could drain onto the road properly. Also there was a recall to put a "debris shield" on the manifold cover and the fuel pump seal(which is why every now and then it wouldn't start on the first crank). I knew all of these were a problem because of my research, but I wanted to see how honest and knowledgeable the dealership was. A week later my passenger floor was still getting wet. Not a huge problem, but annoying never-the-less. I took it back and they said it was not doing it. I said "Keep it overnight, drive it first thing in the morning for at least 2 hours. Low and behold they discover the problem and blow out and clean the AC drain line. I then 1 week later decide to break this thing in and see if I'm going to have some problems or not. I take it with my fiance' and my dog on a 2600 mile round trip road trip up to PA & New Jersey. Flawless. Not one problem,(except of course, for the pulsing, warping, brakes). It was THE most comfortable road trip I've ever taken. I folded the backseat down and my dog was in heaven. Gas mileage was about 22 miles to the gallon according to the trip computer (gotta love that thing, they should come in all cars). I will be honest, because I educated myself on this vehicle, I knew what to look for and expect. That's what makes forums like this redeeming. I recognize my brakes are warping by the gentle pulsing that is starting to build up when I apply the brakes. Yeah, it sucks that this is happening. Yeah, it sucks that Chrysler made poor brakes on this thing. But since we all know this is a defect and Chrysler can't seem to correct it (At least on the 99's. Although NOT ONE person I asked said they had brake trouble whatsoever), do something about it..the problem has a fix people-QUIT COMPLAINING AND BUY SOME DECENT AFTERMARKET BRAKE EQUIPMENT!! Just recognize it's a freakin' defect and move on!!! Your life will be much easier!! You people out there that keep putting Chrysler brake equipment back on after it has failed you 2 and 3 times are amazing!! I genuinely believe the problems that people are stating, but sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands. The vehicle I purchased now has 34,000 miles on it and runs great. Granted, it makes a low, grinding noise when shifting into gear after it has been off for a while. I informed the Jeep dealer and had him put it in writing that this is "normal for Grand Cherokees". Should this be happening? I'm sure it shouldn't. But it's a 1 second noise I can live with. Now if anything goes wrong relating to this complaint, I will have something documented. Choose your battles people, I can let this one slide. I also as a result of forums such as this, decided a GOOD extended warranty like the one WARRANTY GOLD offers would be a good investment. Bumper to bumper 5 years from the warranty purchase date and 100,000 miles on the vehicle I am covered. I purchased this warranty because you people out there scared it into me. BUT, all these Jeeps are NOT bad. Educate yourself on these Jeeps, do your homework, find a nice one, perform ALL the maintenance, purchase an extended warranty, and for God's sake recognize that these things are Jeeps..not Mercede's and Lexus's or whatever other Luxury car SOME, not ALL, SOME of you people are switching over to because you want a JEEP. They are a different animal. I promise to keep you informed of ANY and ALL future problems. I will be completely honest. Just realize that there is NO perfect car and go in armed with knowledge.

It's finally nice to see a good review on the jeep cherokee! I've had my 99 Grand Cherokee Laredo for almost 2 months now and I love it. Everyone I've talked to with a jeep has had nothing but good things to say about the vehicle. I wouldn't give this vehicle up for anything! I love the ride, the looks, everything! My rotors are currently warping to no end, but from past experience with a GM product (Pontiac Grand Am GT----what a piece of crud!!!) I've decided to go the aftermarket way. I also don't understand why people just don't go the aftermarket route with their brakes. Save yourselves some grief in the end and spend that extra money to get decent brakes instead of taking it in for warrantee work, only to find out later on down the road you're going to take it in for the same thing. I'm not one bit disapointed with my Jeep :) I love it!

“I have 60,000 miles now on a 1999 jeep grand cherokee. ”

written by Bob. on 16/07/2002

I have 60,000 miles now on a 1999 jeep grand cherokee.
It gets 20 mpg at 70mph, is very comfortable, very peppy v8 engine. The dealer was very co-operative at 50,000 miles on my extended warranty when I complained about the noisy drive train. He replaced the rear ring & pinion gears, rebuilt the transfer case, and replaced the drive shafts.

The brake problem was solved when I purchased new, harder rotors for the front wheels. The factory rotors were too soft and needed lathe work at 12,000 mile intervals. I have now gone 20,000 miles on the better quality replacement rotors. I expect to drive this vehicle at least an additional 40,000 miles to 100,000 before trading it.

written by Rob. on 02/05/2002

I shopped around for months looking at all of the used SUV's and none could compare to the looks and lay out, the ride and overall high level of refinement of the 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee (I found a fully loaded, leather one in perpect condition). The Toyota 4 runner was a close second, I know they have a very good reputation ,but the prices for old semi beat up,high milage 4 Runners was to much to bear. The used 99 GC Jeeps offered much better value and I have a couple of friends that own Jeep SUV's and highly recommend them. I was well aware of some of the problems some people are having and made sure to check out all the problem areas in the one I picked out from a private seller. The fact is Jeep sold close to 200,000 to 300,000 of these models each year and I'm sure some will have problems. I researched all the used SUV's in the Jeep CG class from all the manufactures and sent many hours at many forum sites and all the SUV's makes have some kind of problem area's, some more that others, but every one had naffed off owners saying this and that. So, to make a long story short I've got a used 99GC with over 60K and have have no problems. Sure it doesn't handle or get as good of gas milage as my old beloved BMW 318i, but my Grand Cherokee can do so much more and think it's just about the best all around go anywere play SUV. Highly recommended.

You couldn't be more wrong! Do you know how annoying it is to have to get your rotors replaced every 2 months? And have the dealer tell you it is because you use the breaks too heavily? I had a Cherokee (93) before my 99, and that had no problems, never any rotor problems. The 99 model is definitely a POS, no doubt about it.

Right on the nose! Everyone thinks that everything should be problem free, wish it was, but is not reality! Things go wrong and wear out. I do think that people can be heavy on the brakes. A jeep is not a sports car, and they don't stop on a dime! Treat your jeep right and it could last forever! 45,000 and no problems, only worn out thing replaced, tires, shocks, brakes. More money for a vehicle doesn't mean it shouldn't have a problem!

I bought my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo new. I have put 94000 miles on it with no major problems. My goal is 200K. I have ordered Power Slot Rotors and Raybestos Quiet Stop Brake pads for the front. This is supposed to resolve the front Brake problems. I have driven a number of vehicles in my days, but this one is the most confortable for the long haul. It has a commanding presence on the road with quick response. I know a number of you have been disappointed, I guess I got lucky with mine.

I agree the breaks are not the best quality. If you still have this vehicle, I would suggest you get all the pads changed to Raybestos Quiet Stop Brake Pads. They are great, they are totally quiet, and no brake dust(very little if any)and are less harsh on your rotors. They list for about 119.99 per set (front or back) you can get them at PEPBOYS for 69.99 a set. I have had only good luck with these and are well worth the money.

An awesome vehicle, It amazes me how fun to drive it is. I have a limited with the v8 and its the best vehicle I've owned. The build quality is very good, over 30k miles and no problems so far.

Has great presence on the road, gives a good ride, tried off road and awsome frightening grip,Quadra track with Diesel is thrown in. Love auto dimming mirrors of a night. love individual climate control with personal infra-red sensors, leather really soft and great smell.. I have 3.1 L Turbo D Almost as much torque as the 4.7l petrol, tried both off road, Turbo diesel is much more controllable and unstoppable torque with individual Quad wheel drive, Consumption quite good, cannot really find any faults. Not cheap but you get what you pay for..allways..
