My 99 Grand Cherokee Laredo has been fantastic. I've changed the differential fluids and transmission fluids at 80,000 and at 140,000 and have had very little problems. The tranny did slip just before the change at 140K, but has worked fine since the change. No problems with the differentials....

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is excellent to own, great to drive. Put's a smile on my face every time I drive it. A diesel is a poor substitute for a V8. Had an LPG conversion when I had it. Costs less to run than my Mum's 2.0 Mondeo. If you want style, looks & a super 4x4, it has to be a Grand Cherokee 4.7......

My Jeep 1999 Grand Cherokee has good comfort and over all style. All wheel drive is nice and dependable. My Jeep has 101,000 miles in 9 years. So, this Jeep is not out of control and abused. I drive it around town and highway. I'm self employed and work at home. I've taken it on 2 or 3 1200 mile trips. That's about it....

I've owned my 1999 Grand Cherokee 4.7 V8 for three years now having bought it at three years old and 32000 miles. It's now done 54,000 and has never let me down. I suspected it had been in an accident which meant that the front suspension had to have some work done on it under warranty, but since then the only things which have gone wrong are the heated seats and an oil pressure sensor. Oh and the tracking is difficult to get right, but Ok when done by someone who knows what he's doing. Remember...

I drive this Jeep 1999 Grand Cherokee 4x4 vehile daily and we use it to go on holiday. We drove down to Southern France in July 04 it was great, loads of space and we went down at 85mph and still got about 20mpg and from 4000cc. My only real gripe is the cost of main dealer servicing, so I do not bother, I use my local guy but follow the Jeep service book. I think this is a very good 4x4 and second hand they are being given away, ok its not an X5 but then again I can have 2 Jeeps for the cost of...

I bought my Jeep 1999 Grand Cherokee limited 4x4 with 53000 miles on it. The winshield fluid hoses need replacing as well as the emergency brake needing tightening. I noticed that the front rotors have some minscule grooves in them and agree that they did not think through the quality of the rotors for a machine this heavy. However many folks have replaced them with special rotors (and or calipers) to permanently eradicate the problem. Some unfortunate souls keep replacing them with the same parts...

Please do not try to impose your opinion on the 1000's of other Jeep owners that have encountered quality problems with Crysler. I have driven my car off road and do not use it in town. I also have it maintained by the Dealer, or should every Jeep owner be a grease monkey? I have done nothing wrong, I paid a lot of money and have spent hours driving to the Dealer to have repairs done to the car. I have spend days without a car that I paid a lot of money for. I suggest you look at the 4x4 reviews from other manufacturers to see how they compare...and as for suggesting people research before they buy, well I did but when I bought the car the quality problems had not surfaced yet. Only now are they emerging in any volume, perhaps you are suggesting I should have used a crystal ball?

Ok - let me get this straight. You have had some -albiet minor - problems with the vehicle since you have owned it in a year. Because of the hangnails and other assorted minor miscues -you somehow rate the vehicle ZERO in every category??? No wonder the vehicle has such a bad rating. These cant be accurate and fair reviews.

Tooby's response to Tooby's Review

Written on: 10/12/2004

Those were just examples of some of the faults the car had. When you drive in winter, it's minus 5C outside and the climate control still blows cold air it's not minor...especially when you have a 10 month old baby in the car. It is also not minor if you cause an accident because the indicators don't work. The latest is an engine failure warning...but everything is relative, if you don't mind these issues then feel free to buy the car from me. No reasonable offer world be turned down so put your money where your mouth is.

Tomdesuler's response to Tooby's Review

Written on: 14/12/2004

Ok I agree. Since this car was rated exactly 0 out of 10 in every way - I will offer you $100 for it. According to your review it is a fair offer and there aint much you can say to that. I have put my money where my mouth is. Now sell me the vehicle intact as decribed in your review.

Tooby's response to Tooby's Review

Written on: 15/12/2004

The $ is worth nothing in Europe so your offer is rejected. I live in a free country and we defend our right to have an opinion, I'm sorry it's not the same as yours. This is the last you will hear from me, I'm sure you will come back with another opinion but I don't care. My opinion stands and your offer of $100 persuades me that you have nothing more to add that is worth reading.

Tomdesuler's response to Tooby's Review

Written on: 16/12/2004

People come on here to get insight into vehicles that they might want to purchase. I had done my homework on my vehicle from all bills and a mechanic, and bought it. It is a winner. Then I come to this site -all to find this vicious panning of the vehicle and that may or may not be fair enough -as everyone is entitled to their opinion. However rating the thing 0 out of 10 in every single category is not only virtually impossible, it does nothing but devalue the rating as a whole. Even though you are not the the first or last person to put up a spite rating based on frustration more than actual accuracy, yours is without a doubt the most ridiculous (in my opinion) on the whole site and I guess I could not take it anymore. I don't care what currency you use, my offer stands $100 euro dollars if you wish.
<br>The bottom line I guess is -I didn't get ripped off, my jeep is great, sorry you got ripped off a LOT of money, I didn't.

Jeep 1999 Grand Cherokee: Take a very good look at the steel brake line that holds the brake fluid that is sent to the rear brakes. Look carefully at each of the 3 black brackets that hold the brake line (and fuel supply and return lines). If you have rust on your brake line (especially near the rear of the car... replace this brake tubing.... It can break and spill brake fluid all over the road. I bought my Jeep 1999 Grand Cherokee from a BMW dealer in the UK and it still had two weeks' manufacturers warranty left. I highlighted that the passenger seat heating did not work and that the key fob central locking was poor. BMW dealer booked the car with Jeep to have the work done under warranty. Jeep delayed and delayed until the warranty ran out so they would not have to pay. Mine is the Grand Cherokee Limited 4.0 litre (68000 miles) and is a very impressive 4 X 4, both in comfort and smooth road driving refinement. LP Gas conversion has helped with running costs. 17 imperial MPG on Petrol and 15 MPG on Gas but LPG is 36p litre as opposed to 80p. Climate contol is superb and recorded the lowest air-vent temperature at our local top-up agent of 1.1'C.

I have owned 2 grand cherokee's in the last 8 years and averaged 14000 miles per year.I had nothing but trouble from both of them,the chrysler brake pads have a short life span and the brake discs warp very easily. On both of them the automatic gear box was clunky and my chrysler dealer was unable to rectify this fault,I part exchanged my petrol cherokee for the latest diesel and after 3000miles the diesel engine developed a bad knock,by this time I was sick and tired of having to go to my chrysler dealer every 2-3 months and part exchanged it for a Toyota Land Cruiser which is a far better and totally reliable car.My love afair with Jeep's is over and I would advise anyone who owns one to get rid of it before is starts costing you serious money

Jeep used to have a good reputation for being a great offroad vehicle and being very reliable. Chrylser needs to get back to building quality and reliablity into their products instead of seeing how much can they make on repairs. There are common parts that should be changed regularly like Fuel filters on the Grand cherokees, that can only be bought from Chrylser. Sounds like you have bought a car that you dont know how to maintain.
<br>Every car breaks down when the driver doesnt maintain it or trashes it when driving. How come my 99 Grand Cherokee never has any problems whatsoever?

Getclear's response to getclear's Review

Written on: 14/12/2004

I spoke with my Jeep dealer, they said the 99's are notorious for having differential problems. They also said that its merely the cost of ownership and I should expect to replace both the front and rear differential every 30K miles.
<br>
<br>I also spoke with a specialist and they indicated the Jeep Grand Cherokee is the number 1 vehicle that has issues with differentials.
<br>
<br>I had a 93 Grand Cherokee and had no problems. So, its just this model.
<br>
<br>In fairness to the car, all continuous 4wd vehicles are destined to have differential problems, just not all as frequently as the Jeep.

Tomdesuler's response to getclear's Review

Agreed !! I guess I fluked out and got a winner. I also agree - after reading all these reviews -too many folks have problems with this model. I do meticulously look after it and do not drive it to work and back -just on weekends and offroading. Aside from the 'normal' brake problems like rotor warping and vibrations on my 2001 V8 GC, which I may have been able to live with, my transmission/drivetrain now has a very nasty 'clunking' when shifting from 2nd to 3rd under light or no load (46k miles). Like all vehicles regular maintenance from new is necessary for vehicles to run without problems. Fuel pumps are generally supplied off-the-shelf by a third party eg bosch and could very well be installed in many makes of vehicle. 150k for a fuel pump i think is the norm and shouldn't be criticised.

<br>Try this web site for information on your WJ. This site has Tech Bulletins for problems that were discovered post production. As with any new generation vehicle there is a shake out phase and unfortunately many people that bought the 99 series got caught. ALL jeeps leak at the transfer case covers and the differentials. It's also an easy fix. Get some RTV gasket compound, remove the covers (drain oil too), clean up mess and run a bead of RTV around cover. Let sit for 15 min to skin and then lightly bold on the covers. Wait until the RTV sets up (1-3hrs)and then snug the bolts down. The WJ web site has all the intel on replacement synthetic oils for the transfer & dif.

Man that is a tough break. The car is falling apart it seems. Cant imagine purchasing a vehicle that new with 97000 miles on it. Someone must have kicked the heck out of it. How about next time you get a mechanic to look at it BEFORE you buy it instead of blindly buying a high mileage specialty vehicle - then somehow being surprised that it is now a piece of junk.

I also have recently purchased a 99 GCL. after the dealer replaced the AC core and recharged the Freon (dealer cost) I have not had any problems. I have 60,000 miles of which 6000 are mine. I have driven to the top of a 12,801 mountain in CO. and it handled like a mountain goat. However...it is a Jeep and since 99 was the first year for the WJ series there are inherent problems. The front wheel whine is NOT normal. there are tech bulletins out for replacing the universals on the front drive. The rear drive shaft has a new Yoke because the old one sticks (Jeep snaps back when stopping). There is updated software that changes the shift points for the 99 transmission and solves the rough/unusual shift problems. These are all covered under warrenty. http://www.wjjeeps.com/tsb.htm has all the info you will ever need for Jeep GC.

And although I have not had all the prolbems the others have, This has not been the quality vehicle I expected after owning an 89 cherokee LTD. We got this used 2 months ago with 59,000 and an extended warrenty, good thing as they have paid for most of the repairs, ie (transfer case do to broken chain before we bought it trans shift prolbem, seat heaters etc.)and haven't got to drive it more than couple weeks before something else quits or brakes. The Dealer has spent more time with this vehicle more than we have.

Well I took it in and they said there were no problems. They mentioned that they 'reset the transmission' I assume they meant software. I am disappointed as it has the same problem. At any rate I have the extended warranty so I am not worried. My AC as well just does not cut it in Las Vegas. When it is over 105 I will have he AC on full power and it feels like nothing is coming out. I had them check that as well but they said it was fine. I have a feeling there is something wrong with the pressure or a blockage occurs at high heat. When it is 80's or 90's it comes out nice and cool.

They gave it a $110.00 Tune-Up to increase exhilaration power, and said that this would solve the problem. So far so good, but it was only yesterday. They suggested to have a "Co-Pilot" installed - a device that tracks any irregularities while driving. I thought this was already done by the expensive electronic on this SUV, but every time I took it in, it had "faulty codes"...figures...and the saga continues...

Brakes are bad again, a/c still has problems and other minor things need repair. Lucky I got extended warranty...if not, would have sold sold the jeep. Now pushing 40,000 trouble-free miles. Once I got aftermarket rotors it was smooth sailing. Also purchased an extended warranty for peace of mind. I was driving my parents 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which spends more time in the shop than it does in our own garage, back from my friend's house one night when I fell asleep at the wheel. I hit a car head on (I was doing about 20, the other guy was driving a toyota carolla doing about 35) my Jeep tipped on it's top and caught on fire. I was pinned in the car by the seat. If it weren't for the jaws of life, I'd probably have 2nd and 3rd degree burns. Don't buy one, people buy them to feel safe, and for extra room. Any SUV really has neither one. You get a high center of gravity with cramped legroom. This Jeep is only meant for a few years of mud slinging, and it can hardly dish even that out.

I bought a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with 45,200 for 18,010 dollers I also got the extended warenty. I've put on 400 miles so far and love the ride. I'm looking forward to the MN winter!
<br>The truck has been a gas pig, 15.9 mpg avr. so far. ( I have the I-6 ) That is the only complant I have, Other wise I love the ride, the look, the way it handles.
<br>But now that I own one, ya, I have notced just how many are out there!
<br>I love my jeep!

I'm one week away from buying a lease-return Grand Cherokee Laredo w/V8.
<br>
<br>I CAN'T AGEE WITH THE ORIGINAL LETTER MORE!!!
<br>
<br>It's a Jeep! I owned a 1997 Wrangler that was the worst maintenance nightmare under warranty but was the most fun vehicle I have ever owned.
<br>
<br>Ying and Yang here folks. I'm looking forward to the Cherokee. Yes I expect to put aftermarket rotors and pads in. Yes I'm getting a huge warranty to keep most of my repair money in my wallet. THAT'S JUST THE WAY IT IS. Do I wish Toyota or Honda made an equivalent vehicle? YOU BET. But now one else has a vehicle that will get you through ANYTHING at this price.

FINALLY!!!! Someone who actually knows what they're talking about! I just hit 80,000 miles on my V8 Laredo. I've done nothing but replace the brakes (with aftermarket equipment) since I bought it. I plan on passing 100,000 with confidence.

I was wondering if anyone has had the "shaky" brake problem after replacing them with aftermarket brakes? I know Chrysler has released a "kit" that fixes the problem but do after markets pads and rotors do the trick?

It's finally nice to see a good review on the jeep cherokee! I've had my 99 Grand Cherokee Laredo for almost 2 months now and I love it. Everyone I've talked to with a jeep has had nothing but good things to say about the vehicle. I wouldn't give this vehicle up for anything! I love the ride, the looks, everything! My rotors are currently warping to no end, but from past experience with a GM product (Pontiac Grand Am GT----what a piece of crud!!!) I've decided to go the aftermarket way. I also don't understand why people just don't go the aftermarket route with their brakes. Save yourselves some grief in the end and spend that extra money to get decent brakes instead of taking it in for warrantee work, only to find out later on down the road you're going to take it in for the same thing. I'm not one bit disapointed with my Jeep :) I love it!

“I just bought a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 3...”

I just bought a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 3 months ago with 36,000 miles. It's been in the shop 5 times with transmission, breaks & linkage problems. The vehicle lunges into gear while putting into park and rolls backwards. No help from the dealer. Jeff Wyler Southgate, Ky. Sucks!!! They state I don't have my foot on the break when putting the vehicle into gear. What morons!!! Dealer says all Jeeps run this way and my problems are normal. My four wheel drive Ford Explorer doesn't drive like...

“I have 60,000 miles now on a 1999 jeep grand cherokee. ”

I have 60,000 miles now on a 1999 jeep grand cherokee.
It gets 20 mpg at 70mph, is very comfortable, very peppy v8 engine. The dealer was very co-operative at 50,000 miles on my extended warranty when I complained about the noisy drive train. He replaced the rear ring & pinion gears, rebuilt the transfer case, and replaced the drive shafts.

The brake problem was solved when I purchased new,harder rotors for the front wheels. The factory rotors were too soft and needed lathe work at...

I have also bought my last jeep. This was my third. 1999 jeep grand cherokee's are awful. 4 sets of front brakes, this last set cost over 500.00, no help from dealer. They don't care! It's off warranty is all they can say. Yesterday had it towed in because transmition went out!!! at 64000 miles. They want 2400.00 to rebuild trans. and they say serpentine belt needs to be replaced at 180.00 and new front brakes (again) just had them replaced in November!!!! Another 500+ dollars. Where's it going...

This reviewer obviously submitted this review immediately after a bad experience and did not seem to be in a reasonable state of mind. If this was the reviewers 3rd jeep and he had unsatisfactory experiences in the past it's questionable as to why he continued to purchase jeeps.

While I agree that the reviewer was not in the best frame of mind, I would probably be the same if the transmission failed so prematurely. When you consider the purchase price of a high end SUV such as the Grand Cherokee, you shouldn't have to deal with the brake issues, and drive train failures. Chrysler did not do their homework on this jeep and its a shame to see their reputation tarnished by this product...

Hmmmm....4 sets of Chrysler brakes huh? Heh heh heh...4? Each and every set gave you trouble eh? Hmmmmm.....Slow learner aren't you? Wait a minute!....and this is just a thought...TRY SOME DIFFERENT AFTERMARKET BRAKES!!!!! This will be that onetime fix you've been yearning for between griping and taking high blood pressure medication. I won't even charge you for that one...NEXT!

I have had the same types of problems with my grand cherokee and the dealership has responded in the same manner. I'm on my 3rd transmission in under 90,000 miles
<br>and currently Jeep is trying to charge me for repairs on a rear differential with less than 40,000 miles on it. The original had to be replaced at about 40,000. For an automobile which is advertised as an off road vehicle, I would expect more than 30-40,000 miles out of the drivetrain. Also, it is disturbing that Jeep treats these sorts of problems as the exception rather than the rule. Grand Cherokees are an inferior vehicle and Jeep has absolutely NO integrity in standing behind their product.

Im sorry you are right. I just purchased a 99 w 44000 and in two weeks I now have trans problems had to fix lock on hatch, radio not working right, was going to take it back today and found the window will not roll down. When the dealer gets all that fixed it it is for sale. 3 weeks after buying it
Sad

This dealership is not one I would recommend. We delivered a mint condition Grand Wagoneer to the service department at Northwest Jeep to adjust engine to pass DEQ emissions tests $80. This bill turned into $800. Then they blew up the engine and gave us a revised estimate of $6000. Very little help from the management to resolve this as its ongoing for over a month. Most likely they are still in litigation over the death caused by a faulty air bag, the case just went to the supreme court. At least our loss was not as great as other consumers. So maybe they are just too busy at the moment to deal with our little issues.

In a word, this 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicle is a piece of junk. As I read the reviews on this site, I noticed that most of the reviews stating the problems that I had (brakes, reliability, general build quality, etc) were poorly reviewed. Well, this vehicle is the piece of garbage that the reviewers are talking about. There are many problems with this vehicle. Brakes are most important problem (service every 10,000 miles), but my rear differential went at 45000 miles. There were many other...
