The Pentax Optio S50 is an extremely poor camera, I would have expected a heck of a lot more from Pentax, let alone a cheap unbranded camera. Truly awful, do not buy it BEWARE! (read more)

I have had this camera for over a year, I got a good deal on mine - for £100 I got the camera, a case, rechargeable batteries and charger. So not bad at all.

My Pentax Optio S50 lens locked up when I put the camera into its carrying case and I inadvertently touched the ON button.
I see where others have sent their camera to be repaired and told it was misused therefore voiding the warranty. Repair cost would have been around $120.00.
I would NOT recommend buying this camera.

Right guys, I've had one of these Optio S50s for a couple of years now and the battery life has brought me close to smashing it up many times. Even on 2700 NiHM, always flat next day.
Noticed it said CR3V on inside so did a quick search and found a 1800 mA RCRV on eBay and a car and mains charger for a total of £11, slipped the battery in when it arrived and hey presto the green battery light was actually showing for once, left it on video for 13 minutes and took loads of photos and its...

When you buy the Pentax Optio S50 digital camera, you're buying a piece of technology that, if treated right, will be good to you for years.
P.S. The batteries don't die too quickly if you buy proper camera batteries!

The Pentax Optio S50 would be an ideal digital camera if it wasn't for the battery life. It is a real nuisance. I thought it must have a short circuit because it won't take more than a dozen pictures before it is flat. Worse still, if you leave brand new batteries in it they are flat by the next day. Like other reviewers, I've found the battery life a joke with the Pentax Optio S50 digital camera, even with high power rechargables, and I'm extremely disappointed with this. I bought Pentax thinking it would be quality, and although the pictures are good, it really does have a problem with low battery life (and yes, also a long delay in taking pictures), and these problems detract from this camera. Don't bother to purchase this. For a 5mp the Pentax Optio S50 is a disaster for quality. I've seen sharper pictures through frosted glass. On 'P' mode is no different. The flash wouldn't illuminate a matchbox.
I am so pleased I didn't buy it because it was a gift. Feel angry that friends paid their money for a truly inferior camera. There's much better out there.
When on the PC screen objects look like cardboard cut-outs. Remember just because it's got 5mp don't mean a thing.
In case I...

I bought a Pentax Optio S50 camera because my old Canon digital was too bulky. The price is excellent considering the features and size. Very compact, easy to use and 5m pixels!
I soon found that battery life is about 15 photos... REALLY! I am currently trying to contact Pentax to see if there is a problem with the camera or if the 2 x AA batteries are just not enough to power all the features.
The other big problem I have is the reaction speed of the camera from when I hit the fire button...

I have since been told by Pentax that using high-capacity rechargeable batteries will increase battery life up to 4 times... that would be about 50 fotos, which isn't a heck of a lot. I guess you would need a spare set with you at all times!

Excellent camera except for two serious limitations, slow trigger response and short AA batery life. Using NiMH batteries significantly increased the number of shots per charge, from 15 to about 60.
